Frontline Your introductory newsletter from St Mungo s Thank you for your support mungos.org/donate 1
Thank you A message from Howard Sinclair I want to thank you for supporting St Mungo s. Your support will make sure that people sleeping rough on the streets are given the right help so that they can hope and plan for a brighter future. St Mungo s was established to support people sleeping rough and to make sure they have every chance to recover and move on with their lives. During the 1970s St Mungo s was helping 800 people each year. Thanks to generous people like you our work has continued and grown to reach more people. Now we directly support over 20,000 people across our housing, health and work services. I hope you enjoy finding out more about how kind donations like yours help give people in need a chance to rebuild their lives. 3 Our work at a glance In just one year at St Mungo s... On any one night, we provided housing and support to around 2,600 people across the country who were homeless or at risk of homelessness. Over the course of a year we help 20,000 people across all our services. 2, ,000 hours 830 volunteers contributed 154,000 hours of their time - or 26 days per person on average - to help us run our services and made a significant difference to the lives of people we work with. 79% of our clients who moved on from our accommodation made a planned, positive move to independent or more appropriate accommodation. 79% Will you help us to campaign for change? Being able to share the voices of thousands of clients and supporters is very powerful. Combined with research and experience supporting homeless people, it allows St Mungo s to campaign for change. We campaign in order to motivate the government to take action. By raising public awareness and showing that members of the public care about homelessness, we can put the weight of all our voices behind our calls for change to end homelessness and rebuild lives. To join our campaigns please visit mungos.org/get-involved/campaign-forchange mungos.org/donate 3
StreetLink How you can help provide a lifeline to those spending the night on the streets. St Mungo s manages the national rough sleeper referral line StreetLink in partnership with Homeless Link. StreetLink is a referral line and website available across England and Wales which enables members of the public to alert our staff and volunteers about rough sleepers in their area. This service gives the public a way to help when they see someone sleeping rough and is the first step someone can take to ensure rough sleepers are connected to the local services and support available to them. Referrals to the StreetLink team from people like you are directed to local services, including outreach workers. Volunteers are extremely important. Christian is a volunteer who works at the StreetLink call centre. I took a call from a member of the public who had seen a woman sleeping at Edmonton bus station. She had seen the woman sleeping there on and off for several months. After the outreach team found her they were able to help her to get housing. By referring rough sleepers to the service or giving time volunteering on the referral line members of the public play a crucial role in helping people break the cycle of homelessness. You can help someone sleeping rough If you see someone sleeping rough in England or Wales visit streetlink.org.uk, or download the app on your phone, and connect them with the help that they need. To find out more information about how you can become a StreetLink Referral Line Volunteer in London, volunteer@streetlink.org.uk 4
A shelter that changed my life Each night 2,600 people sleep in safety under a St Mungo s roof Since 13 years old Nick s depression had the power to leave him in dark places. Having no one to turn to he became homeless at just 23. I moved to Bristol because I thought I d find a job there while a friend kindly put me up. But things didn t turn out like that. After so many failed applications and interviews I broke down and so did the relationship with my friend. I ended up sleeping in a tent in Castle Park. As winter approached it became too cold to bear. I d heard about a St Mungo s project at the Compass Centre on Jamaica Street. I spent three nights there. That was three years ago. Since, St Mungo s connected me with more of their services and helped me to build confidence. I also gained valuable skills through volunteering and my future became clearer to me. I saw a chance to apply for a Complex Needs Worker at a St Mungo s project and I went for it. I feel so proud to tell you that I was successful. All of these opportunities have been possible because of the generosity of supporters, like you. Thank you. mungos.org/donate 5
Thank you for helping us to reach out every night Outreach teams, supported by donors and volunteers, are at the heart of our response to rough sleeping. Rough sleeping is dangerous and can be both a cause and consequence of physical and mental health problems, bereavements and trauma in people s lives. What do outreach teams do? Our outreach teams go out night after night, and early mornings, to find people who are sleeping rough. They could be people who are new to the street, sleeping rough for the first time, or they may have a rough sleeping history and complicated problems that make it more difficult to move off the streets. How do we know where to find people sleeping rough? Our outreach teams comb the streets looking in areas where rough sleepers are known to sleep. We also rely on referrals from members of the public like you, support workers (from alcohol, drug or mental health services) and public services such as hospitals to let us know where we can find people in need of our help. Sometimes it can be difficult to find people, even after they ve been spotted and referred to us. 6
To protect themselves from danger and cold weather, many people living on the streets make themselves very difficult to find and try to avoid being noticed in case this brings trouble. This means sleeping in out of the way places. We will search up stairwells, look behind bins and under bushes, wherever we know people sleep. Why do people live on the streets? The causes of homelessness and rough sleeping are varied. They include relationship breakdown, eviction, leaving prison, traumatic childhood experiences and bereavement. The most common cause experienced by over a third of people we speak with is relationship breakdown. For more information on outreach please visit mungos.org/streetoutreachteams What happens when we find a rough sleeper? We gradually build up trusting relationships, meeting with people to offer alternatives to rough sleeping. We work in partnership with other organisations to help people access physical and mental health services, accommodation and drug and alcohol services, as needed. Where appropriate, we assist people with reconnection helping them to return to their home towns in the UK and abroad. With some rough sleepers, particularly those who have lived on the streets for a long time, it may take a while to gain trust and bring them into some kind of accommodation. Your support helps our outreach workers to build a relationship with people who desperately need our help. mungos.org/donate 7
Stopping homelessness, before it s too late How your support helps rough sleepers. Our No Second Night Out project Launched in 2011, No Second Night Out (NSNO) operates as a rapid response service to make sure that, wherever possible, a rough sleeper s first night on the street is also their last night on the street. By intervening early, our No Second Night Out project aims to reduce the number of people sleeping rough in the long term. When someone is on the street, it is incredibly difficult to access the right support and services, and even more difficult to move back into long term accommodation. Gabby Smart, Assessment and Reconnection Worker No Second Night Out works closely with outreach teams. Outreach workers bring in new rough sleepers to one of three St Mungo s NSNO hubs, for intensive support and our staff then work hard to identify a viable, safe housing option for each person within 72 hours. For more information on our NSNO project visit nosecondnightout.org.uk Gabby Smart is an Assessment and Reconnection Worker at the No Second Night Out hub in West London. She has been working day and night shifts since December Tea bar at an NSNO hub 8
David s story I m David, I d like to share my St Mungo s journey with you. When I was evicted from my flat in 2008, I decided to find out where and why I was going wrong in my life and how to make the necessary changes. I was sleeping on the streets for about three weeks when I was first placed into a temporary hostel. After two years I was moved into a semi independent house run by St Mungo s. There I learnt about Move on Training and decided to get involved. I was invited to join Outside In * and felt it would help me to find real friends and learn more about life in general. Six months after joining Outside In I heard about the St Mungo s Recovery College which started up in The courses were to make a lasting impact in my recovery and led to me going to college full time. I started off by doing assertiveness and self esteem courses. Both of these I had none of so I realised that they were the next essential step. Becoming involved in the Life Skills sessions was the hardest decision I David ever made because it was about mental health. Ever since I was a child I had it drilled into me that poor mental health was socially unacceptable but when I started these sessions my awareness grew and my life changed. I began to feel that I was loveable, capable and useful. What I ve achieved in my four years with St Mungo s is that I am now more socially aware about myself and others. I can live a life being happy with who I am and that s how I know I am ready. Thank you for supporting St Mungo s and helping me get to where I am today. * Outside In is a peer support group of St Mungo s clients which helps other clients start voluntary work. mungos.org/about/real_life_stories 9
In loving memory of Deva Pragyan When Deva Pragyan passed away aged 64 in December 2011, his family set up an online In Memory fund, and created a place of celebration and remembrance of his life. 18 months after his death, his daughters Majida and Lisa decided to fundraise to help people experiencing homelessness in his memory, as St Mungo s had provided support to Pragyan during a very tough period of his life. In the early 1990s he returned to London after years of sleeping rough in Christiania, Denmark. He soon became homeless again and was struggling with alcoholism. St Mungo s gave him a place at our project in Highbury and helped him to get re-housed in Islington. Majida says: We are forever grateful to St Mungo s for helping Pragyan in his time of need. Pragyan was a free spirit, who believed in finding the best in everyone. He touched many people s lives and and his online In Memory fund has given friends from around the world a place to come together to share pictures, stories and memories. Pragyan and his grandchildren Over the years, Majida and Lisa have completed various fundraising events and challenges, raising vital funds in memory of their father. For more information about setting up your own In Memory fund, please visit memories.mungos.org or call Katie Wimpenny, Legacy and In Memory Coordinator, on
Other ways you can get involved Our vital work simply could not happen without your support. Last year our Community and Events supporters raised over 250,000 for St Mungo s From abseiling to bake sales, there are hundreds of different ways that you can raise money for St Mungo s. Whether you get your school, workplace, faith or community group or just you and your friends involved, you can make a real difference to the lives of people experiencing homelessness. Here are just some ideas of ways you can help: Host a coffee morning with your friends and family at home, work, school or in your community. Hold a bucket collection for us. Donate gifts in lieu whether you are celebrating your birthday, house warming, retirement or wedding, why not donate the costs of your gifts to St Mungo s? Support us through your faith group. Consider choosing us as your Charity of the Year through your community group. Run, swim, cycle or abseil in one of our sponsored sporting events. For more information, please contact our Community and Events Team on or events@mungos.org. We would love to hear from you! mungos.org/how_you_can_help 11
