AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION Focus on: Loss & Healing Programs

We are a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death.

Our Mission Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide

20 x 25 We ve set a bold goal to reduce the annual suicide rate in the U.S. 20 percent by 2025.

To fully achieve its mission, AFSP engages in the following Five Core Strategies: Fund scientific research Offer educational programs for professionals Educate the public about mood disorders and suicide prevention Promote policies and legislation that impact suicide and prevention Provide programs and resources for survivors of suicide loss and people at risk, and involve them in the work of the Foundation

Healing Programs International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day Saturday Nov 19, 2016 Survivor Day is the one day a year when thousands of suicide loss survivors gather around the world at local events to find comfort and gain understanding as they share stories of healing and hope.

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day Trailer

Healing Programs Memory Quilt - allows suicide loss survivors to honor their loved ones by creating a commemorative quilt square or by memorializing them online using video - Each panel in the quilt tells the story of someone who took their life. - quilts are publically displayed at local and national events to remind us that no survivor of suicide loss stands alone

Support Resources Support Group Listing AFSP provides listings for hundreds of suicide loss survivor support groups in the U.S. - simply enter your zip code

Support Resources Survivor Outreach Program In the aftermath of a suicide, volunteers, who are themselves survivors of suicide loss, make in-person, phone, or video call visits with those who have recently lost a loved one to suicide to offer peer support.

Support Resources After a Suicide: A toolkit for Schools Created in partnership with the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, this toolkit offers critical guidance for education professionals and school communities that have experienced a suicide.

Trainings Support Group Facilitator Trainings Experienced trainers use presentations, interactive discussions, and role-play to prepare participants to run effective suicide loss support groups for adults or children and teens. Suicide Bereavement Clinical Trainings This workshop provides a focused overview of suicide s impact on those left behind and addresses the support that suicide loss survivors need to begin their healing process.

And include them in the work of the Foundation.. Volunteer opportunities exist throughout AFSP for Survivors of Suicide Loss to join a supportive community and give back to others. Lead community presentations & trainings Spread the word about AFSP programs by tabling at community events, health fairs, and within the business community Become a Board member to lead the organization into the future Participate in your local Out of The Darkness Walk and join and share with others who have similar experiences while supporting AFSP initiatives
