2 What is Community Engagement at VCH? Purpose: VCH CE plans and supports how members of the public and VCH work together toward improved and sustainable healthcare Values: Capacity building We believe that people who work in all levels of healthcare should have access to, and be able to listen to and work with, the public Voices We believe that the diversity of public and stakeholder voices within VCH s region should be welcomed and represented in our healthcare planning Partnerships We believe in forming and maintaining partnerships between VCH and our local governments, communities, and organizations Engagement We believe that people should be engaged in their own health, and in the management of their healthcare People First We believe that people our patients and their families and caregivers; our staff; and members of the public in the communities to which we belong comefirst, in all that we do At VCH, our True North Goals are the backbone of our strategic framework, which guides all our operational planning. These goals sit on a podium of People First We believe that we all have a say in having the best healthcare possible. 1

4 CEAN The Community Engagement Advisory Network 80 Members The Community Engagement Advisory Network (CEAN) is a group of 80 members of the public who support patient and public involvement in health service planning and decision making at Vancouver Coastal Health. CEAN is supported by the Community Engagement department. Who can join? Anyone who lives or works within the Vancouver Coastal 27% Health area except for VCH staff. E mail ce@vch.ca if you would like to join CEAN. CEAN membership 45% CEAN membership has grown 45% in the past year (Apr 2012 Apr 2013) CEAN membership by VCH geographical area: 3

In a people-centred organization, it is important that clients and residents be involved at every stage of program development from planning a new program; to providing input on existing services; to encouraging and supporting self-care; to participating in individual and collective efforts to promote health. That s the ideal, but to leaders and staff within VCH, it may not be obvious how to make that happen.
