This is an exciting time to join Breast Cancer Now. Formed in 2015 from the merger of Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Campaign, we are the UK s largest breast cancer research charity. We fund the brightest minds to discover how to prevent breast cancer, how to detect it earlier and how to treat it effectively at every stage. With 50,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and over 11,500 women dying from the disease, we urgently need to raise more money to save lives. More information on our research can be found at The Fundraising Division will raise over 26m in 2015/2016, but we need to grow income significantly over the next five years in order to fund the scientific breakthroughs that will make breast cancer a survivable disease. Community and Events Fundraising will play a pivotal role in this income growth. We have huge potential in these areas, particularly from those supporters raising money in memory of a loved one lost or to support a loved one through treatment and recovery.

2 We are seeking an experienced, skilled and enthusiastic Assistant Director of Community and Events Fundraising to lead a programme of change to galvanise the huge potential of our supporters in these areas and help us make the step change in income which will drive the research discoveries which will save lives. The Community and Events Fundraising team The Community and Events team develops relationships with supporters who: Organise their own fundraising this can cover a huge range of activity such as cake sales, being sponsored to do something or give something up, holding a quiz night or a ball etc. Join or form a Breast Cancer Now local group Choose Breast Cancer Now to support via employee fundraising in their local company Adopt Breast Cancer Now as the beneficiary of their school, club, association etc. Support Breast Cancer Now through their student RAG fundraising or as students taking part in an event Take part in a challenge event such as runs, bike rides, treks, parachutes jumps or extreme challenges like Tough Mudder Using expert relationship funding skills, the team looks to build excellent relationships with these supporters, finding out their motivations for supporting Breast Cancer Now and empowering them to raise money in the way they want. We will also seek to offer other relevant ways to support such as cross selling direct debit giving, legacies etc. and non-financial ways to support such as campaigning and raising awareness of our public health prevention messages. New supporters can pro-actively approach the charity to offer to support us, or are recruiting by our Now is Good campaign which delivers digital outreach marketing to potential Community supporters. We are about to launch an innovative Funds in Memory website, giving supporters the ability to create their own, personalised in memory pages where friends and family can make donations, link fundraising activities like runs, and leave personal messages. Our goal is to have long term, multi-faceted relationships with supporters, which maximise all the ways they can help us. Our average Community gift is currently 303, which we believe can grow significantly. A large proportion of our Community and Events supporters have a personal link to our cause they are raising money in memory of a loved one or to support a loved one through treatment and recovery. A key feature of our drive to grow income will be to understand these motivations more thoroughly and find ways of engaging greater numbers of people with a personal link to breast cancer and building relationships with them. Our challenge events programme includes a Virgin Money London Marathon team of over 200 runners, and a RideLondon team of over 230 cyclists. We also have our own London-Cambridge bike ride which generates c 200k pa. In total around 6,000 people a year take part in an event for us, covering activities such as skydiving, extreme challenges like Tough Mudder, treks around the UK and international challenges. The Community and Events team benefits from a Marketing and Analysis team of three posts who provide expert analysis of activities and communications to improve results and develop new engagement approaches.

3 In total the Community and Events team will raise 2.2m from Community supporters, 2.2m from Challenge Events and 575k from Student fundraising in 2015/2016. The Community and Events team currently has 22 posts, four of whom report to the Assistant Director: Two Community Engagement Managers who report to the Assistant Director Eight Community Engagement Officers (two based in Scotland), each covering a region of the UK A Marketing and Analysis Manager who reports to the Assistant Director, and two Marketing and Analysis Executives A Senior Challenge Events and Student Fundraising Manager, who reports to the Assistant Director and seven Challenge Events and Student Fundraising posts The new Assistant Director will, in conjunction with the Director of Fundraising and Supporter Engagement, review the Community and Events strategy and prepare recommendations for the team s development in order to ensure we are best placed to grow income. Purpose of the role To maximise net income and supporter engagement from Community and Events supporters to enable Breast Cancer Now to deliver its vision of making breast cancer a survivable disease by Key accountabilities To devise and implement Breast Cancer Now s Community and Events strategy and budgets to deliver growing net income budgets. To grow the number of supporters and maximise all the ways they can help the charity by building excellent relationships with them. To manage the performance and personal development of the Community and Events team, reflecting Breast Cancer Now s organisational values and behaviours. To engage Breast Cancer Now s Community and Events supporters in helping build the Breast Cancer Now brand and deliver key public health messages. Any other duties as directed by and agreed with line manager General responsibilities Monitor and manage the team s budgets on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, develop business cases for investment when necessary and develop and deliver to income and expenditure budgets. Develop long-term strategies to deliver income and supporter growth, ensuring these are effective planed, evaluated and reported on including proposing alternative plans and activities when performance is not on track. Develop and implement processes, controls and rigour that ensure accurate budgeting, forecasting and planning for both the short and long term.

4 Build relationships at all levels to ensure the work of the Community and Events team is understood and actively supported by other teams. Ensure that you and your team work actively with other colleagues and wider organisational goals. Promote innovation and improvement in all areas through research and development and horizon scanning for new opportunities. Ensure that organisationally we are maximising our interactions most effectively for the greatest return Be an ambassador at events, supporting the delivery of Breast Cancer Now s vision and ensuring that the charities profile and reputation are enhanced.

5 Person Specification Experience We would like you to have the following experience: In Community and Events Fundraising for example community fundraising, treks/marathons/challenge event management, SME corporate fundraising, student engagement, etc. In-depth experience of strategic planning and budget setting in the complex range of activities under Community and Events Fundraising, with demonstrable delivery of successful annual and three-year plans Personal experience of building relationships with supporters to deliver financial income Proactive working knowledge of relationship management databases Demonstrable experience of working with and presenting to supporters of all types (Chief Executive s to event committees, individual runners to student rags, etc.) to retain, grow and secure their long-term support Skills We would like you to be able to: Lead and manage substantial teams, including staff development, coaching and performance management Lead major change programmes Effectively manage external fundraising agencies and suppliers, monitoring their outputs against key performance indicators Build, manage and develop stakeholder client and supporter relationships up to board level Demonstrate the ability to recruit, motivate and support volunteer leaders Take a flexible approach to managing a wide and varied workload, prioritising and delegating accordingly, ensuring achievement of targets within a fast paced and changing environment with tight deadlines Confidently represent Breast Cancer Now in public to Senior Management team and the Board and able to communicate complex issues clearly, succinctly and constructively.
