1 Embargoed until 00:01 Monday 1 st August ,200 people in Nottinghamshire will be living with cancer by 2030 New report from Macmillan Cancer Support celebrates advances in cancer treatment and care but warns that more needs to be done with increasing demand Every day 17 people in Nottinghamshire hear the devastating news that they have cancer, and 8 people die from the illness. This will see Nottinghamshire s population of people living with cancer more than double to 69,200 by With the numbers of people living with cancer in the UK set to grow from 2.5 million people to 4 million by this equates to a 95% increase in one generation in the number of people living with or beyond cancer in Nottinghamshire. 3 As a result, more people than ever will need support with long-term side effects. In a new report Cancer: Then and Now out today, Macmillan reveals for the first time the number of cancer survivors from the 1970s and 1980s in the UK as 170, People on average are twice as likely to survive at least 10 years after being diagnosed with cancer than they were at the start of the 1970s. 5 These improvements in survival are partly due to earlier diagnosis by way of screening programmes and advances in diagnostic tools, as well as more refined treatment. The report compares the diagnosis, treatment and care of cancer then, to the experiences of cancer in the 2010s. While documenting drastic improvements over this time, particularly in available treatments, it also acts as a stark reminder that cancer continues to be a devastating diagnosis and one which affects a person long after their treatment has finished.

2 It highlights the consistent and growing support the charity offers people affected by cancer, including the introduction of Macmillan nurses in 1975 to the first Macmillantrained benefits adviser in The charity, launches its brand new advertising campaign today which shows the breadth of services available to people affected by cancer such as Macmillan professionals, information and services and warns that demand for these services will continue to grow as more people with cancer live longer. Worryingly, recent analysis from Macmillan shows an estimated 116,000 cancer patients last year in England did not have the potential long-term side effects from their cancer fully explained to them. 7 Christie Platt, 20, from Kirkby-in-Ashfield was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma when she was just 8 years old. She was treated successfully at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, however the cancer had a lasting effect on her and she s suffered severely with depression ever since. She refused to talk about what had happened to her, stopped eating and was unable to leave the house. Eventually she took a drug overdose. It was only when she met Macmillan nurse Laura Cutler last year that she has been able to get the support she needs to help rebuild her confidence and get her life back on track. Laura specialises in supporting long term survivors of teenage and young adult cancer one of the projects within the Macmillan Cancer Partnership in

3 Nottinghamshire. It is run in partnership with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Christie said: When my chemotherapy finished that was it. I was thrown straight back into normal life. I found it really hard. When I went back to school I was bullied because I d lost my hair. I felt really self conscious and lost all my confidence. When I first met Laura I was in a really bad place. It was so good to have someone to talk to. We d meet up and go for a drink and talk about stuff. Straight away I started to feel better. I d felt like I was completely on my own. I couldn t talk to my mum about how I was feeling because I was worried that I would upset her and I couldn't talk to my friends because they wouldn't have understood. Laura encouraged Christie to apply for university and she s now about to finish her first year there where she is studying to become a counsellor. Looking at myself now and seeing how much I have progressed, I know that none of this would have been possible without Laura's support. I feel like with her help, I am now finally beginning to come to terms with what has happened to me and realise that my achievements are something to be proud of. The imprint that having cancer left on my emotions would often feel unbearable, which is why I think that having survivorship services like this one are so important. I will be eternally grateful for what Laura has helped me overcome. The Macmillan Cancer Partnership in Nottinghamshire was launched just over a year ago and has invested more than 3.5M to help improve support for people living with and beyond cancer in Nottinghamshire. Research summary: Cancer registration data on individuals who were diagnosed with cancer and alive on the 31st December 2013 were extracted from the registration systems for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales by each registry and provided to NCRAS in anonymised format. Cancer registrations were categorised into female breast, colorectal, lung, prostate and all other cancers (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers). Data on age, sex and year of diagnosis were also used for analysis. A negative binomial regression model was used to estimate the number of people who were still living with cancer at the end of 2013 and who were diagnosed before cancer registries were established in their respective nations (for England and Scotland this was before 1971, for Wales before 1985 and for Northern Ireland before 1993). Results presented here are for all cancers (a total of female breast, colorectal, lung, prostate and all others cancers excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) by age group at time of diagnosis for all persons by selected decade.
