6 Beyond working directly with children and families, Cornerstones works with communities to strengthen their ability to improve the lives of children. In 2013, Cornerstones served children and families in 134 counties throughout Kansas and Missouri. Cornerstones also provides services in Nebraska, Illinois, Maryland and New Jersey. In Missouri, we provided behavior training to 316 school districts and training to 46 non-profit and government agencies
7 Bobby Anna Bobby didn t want to do anything; he just sat on his chair. They couldn t control his behaviors at school, says his mother Karla. At home, he had the same behaviors he was very hard to handle. Bobby was diagnosed with a developmental delay at age three. By age six, his school could not manage his frequent intense tantrums involving the destruction of property and physical aggression. Bobby was placed in the Gillis Extensive Learning Program classroom, which is designed for students who, in addition to therapy and behavior interventions, need functional application of academic skills due to a cognitive learning or communication disability. After six months, the Gillis staff began to see a decrease in Bobby s rage reaction characterized by extreme anxiety. Initially, he had a difficult time speaking, engaging in conversation or playing in a therapeutic setting after being in crisis. He eventually learned to use coping skills and verbal communication to express his feelings. Bobby attended first, second and third grades at Gillis, then began his transition back into his home school. Since then, there have been minimal behavioral occurrences. From the minute we walked through the door, I knew Anna was in good hands. Julie and Ted had been worried about how much Anna, their beautiful, 13 year-old perfectionist, had withdrawn from them, as well as from the friends and activities she usually loved. Then one spring evening they found their 13-year old daughter unconscious and unresponsive. What they had mistaken for shyness and teenage withdrawal turned out to be severe depression and thoughts of suicide. Upon awakening, Anna began sobbing. I hate myself! I wish I were dead, she told her parents. Julie called Marillac s 24-hour emergency line and was immediately connected to Linda, an intake specialist. From the minute we walked through the door, I knew Anna was in good hands, recalls Julie. The doctors, the therapists, the youth care specialists - everyone on the staff - seemed so competent and caring. I knew we were in the right place. After several days of intensive individual, group and family therapy, Marillac psychiatrists all affiliated with the University of Kansas School of Medicine were able to diagnose and prescribe medication and outpatient treatment for Anna s depression. Today, Anna s smile has returned. We ve got our daughter back, says Ted. For a while, I was afraid that we were going to lose her. We are so grateful for the doctors and therapists at Marillac for helping our daughter and for helping us

9 Adverse Childhood Experiences Adverse childhood experiences play a significant role in determining the likelihood of the 10 most common causes of death in the United States. The authors of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, Drs. Felitti and Anda, found a strong, graded relationship to the number of adverse childhood experience categories and a wide range of physical, emotional and social problems including: smoking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hepatitis, heart disease, fractures, diabetes, obesity, alcoholism, depression and attempted suicide, other substance abuse, teen pregnancy (including paternity), sexually transmitted diseases, rape, poor occupational health and poor job performance. According to Drs. Felitti and Anda, as well as a growing body of research, adverse childhood experiences lead to disrupted neurodevelopment in early childhood which then can cause emotional, cognitive and social impairment in childhood and adolescence. The Cornerstones family of agencies provides a broad spectrum of services for children and families to assist individuals and families in improving their social-emotional well-being and guiding those who have been impacted by trauma through the healing process. In 2013, we provided services to 8,214 children and families. This led to more than 10,000 family members benefiting from these services. Across our family of agencies, we provide a comprehensive spectrum of care consisting of more than 30 programs
