TRUST = BACKBONE ORGANIZATION Founded in 1991 to support and develop Los Angeles Unified School District school health programs Mission: to improve student health and increase readiness to learn through access, advocacy and programs Key strategic goals: 1) Develop and support robust integrated Wellness Networks 2) Advance school health policy 3) Diversify and leverage partnerships to support student and community health

11 WHY SCHOOL BASED CARE? School is where the kids are Disparities have not shifted.we have to do something differently LOTS OF RESEARCH: Significant increase in attendance for SBHC users compared to non users GPA increases overtime with mental health users Burns, et al, Journal of Adolescent Health (2009) 1-7

18 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS 6 PSAs were created on topics about: 1) Obesity Prevention 2) Healthy Relationship 3) Minor Consent Law

19 ALIGNMENT OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT CAMPAIGNS One major campus-wide event each semester Focus on overall wellness and linkage to Wellness Center services Topics healthy eating, physical fitness, anti-smoking messages, STD/HIV prevention, mental health, substance abuse prevention, etc. Wellness Resource Fair Align all the campaigns and leverage resources Streamline coordination and planning

21 ORAL HEALTH INITIATIVE Our 2020 goals Expand to 24 school based dental hubs Establish 100% Kindergarten Mandate for LAUSD students Hold Annual Tooth Fairy Convention for public awareness and access to oral health
