3 CHAIR S REPORT The first full year of Hambleton Community Action has certainly been challenging for staff and trustees but with tenacity, goodwill and belief in the services we provide we have achieved better outputs than we dared to envisage. I would like to thank our funders and trust that in their reading of the report they can agree that the monies are well spent. Our principle asset is however our volunteers who give their time selflessly so that we can continue to provide core services. During the financial year and more recently we have lost the services of long serving trustees and we are actively seeking replacement trustees with appropriate knowledge and experience to guide us in the future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow trustees and, Sally Anderson in particular, for keeping a steady hand on the tiller when I was absent to receive life saving medical treatment. 2018/19 will be another challenging year for us but I am encouraged by the level of support we receive and the acknowledgement of the community that we are providing leadership in those areas where it is needed. 4 CHIEF OFFICER S REPORT In common with many voluntary sector organisations, the ever-changing funding environment presented our charity with a number of knock-backs along with a set of new opportunities. Consequently, we introduced monthly social afternoons for older people in Northallerton, in a bid to help overcome loneliness and isolation. We also launched Busy Buddies, an inspirational supported volunteering project, in response to identified needs. We continued to monitor and review our activities throughout the year and I m pleased to report that feedback from our service-users has been overwhelmingly positive Hambleton Community Action s community projects definitely make a positive difference to people s lives! This impact report would be incomplete without recognising the major contribution played by our hardworking volunteers, dynamic and enthusiastic staff team, funding agencies and supportive board of trustees. 5 JOIN OUR TEAM If you enjoy meeting people and have some spare time then we would love to hear from you. We re currently seeking volunteer drivers, shoppers, visitors, & mentors, as well as volunteer fundraisers, helpers for our social events at Rivendale, office assistants and charity trustees. All these roles help support our essential community services in Northallerton, Bedale, and the surrounding villages. All volunteers are offered training and support in their roles, and travel expenses can be reimbursed. Interested.then why not get in touch? Our contact details can be found on the back page. Please note: some roles require volunteers to supply references and undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. 6 COMMUNITY CAR 58,473 miles travelled 35 volunteer drivers 5104 passenger journeys Its wonderful to know you are always on hand. 6

7 COMMUNITY CAR The Community Car Scheme helps people who are unable to access public transport in Northallerton, Bedale and surrounding villages. Community Car Scheme users may have mobility difficulties, a disability or live in a remote rural area. The drivers are always helpful. They look after me. Thank you to everyone involved. We appreciate the goodwill and friendliness of the drivers. 7

8 WHEELS 2 WORK The Wheels 2 Work moped loan scheme has helped people get to work, apprenticeships, or training, where no other form of transport is available. Eligible candidates received a moped after they had completed their compulsory basic training (CBT). It allowed me to start a contract I wouldn t have been able to access otherwise. It has enabled me to stay at my job until I went to University, it has given me the freedom to pick up shifts on-call. The level and quality of service was fantastic, understanding, professional yet very friendly 8

9 WHEELS 2 WORK 56 people used the scheme It s made me more confident as I got to meet new people and has given me experience on the road. It allowed me to save towards passing my driving test and getting my own transport 32 mopeds were available for use 9

10 COMMUNITY VISITING The Community Visiting Scheme supports people who feel socially isolated, through regular visits from a volunteer. The scheme operates across Northallerton, Bedale and surrounding villages. Volunteers usually visit people on a weekly basis for an hour or two at a time. I really enjoy my volunteers visits and the walks she takes me on. She is one special lady. I really look forward to her visits and long may it continue. 10

12 CARERS RESPITE SITTING Our Carers Respite Sitting Scheme supports carers living in Northallerton, Bedale and surrounding villages, offering them the opportunity for a short break from their caring duties. Volunteers usually visit for 2-3 hours per week, at a time convenient for the carer and volunteer. My wife benefits from the sitter service by having someone other than me to chat to. She, like me, looks forward to their visits and their news about them and their families and the outside world. She always feels better from their visits. 12

14 VOLUNTEERING Last year we offered a variety of different volunteering roles within Hambleton Community Action, including driving, visiting, mentoring, fundraising, admin support and charity trustees. In 2017 we launched a new supported volunteering project Busy Buddies, enabling people with additional support needs to volunteer within Hambleton Community Action and the wider voluntary sector. This pilot was so successful it attracted additional funding to extend the project into the next year. I really enjoy being useful and never know what I am going to be doing next it s great fun and a pleasure to help such lovely people. The busy buddies were a great help at our event. They helped with welcoming attendees, serving coffee and teas and handing out leaflets. 14

16 INFORMATION & SUPPORT Hambleton Community Action provided a wide range of support services to other charities and community organisations, including provision of informative newsletters, loan of community and fundraising equipment, financial accounting services and organising partnership meetings e.g the Hambleton & Richmondshire Rural Transport & Access Partnership. Thank you for the loan of the equipment, it really helped us with raising awareness of our group. 16
