4 Hamovitch Research Center Awards, University of Southern California. ( ) School of Social Work PhD Fellowship, University of Southern California. ( ) Teaching Interests (Statement) The main goals of my teaching and mentoring are closely aligned with the goals of the School of Social Welfare and promote the strategic plan of the University: to assist students to be competent social workers who engage in effective social work practice, rigorous scientific research, or both. The incorporation of these goals into my research, teaching, and service at both national and international levels provides cohesiveness and synergy to my work. I have prepped three bachelor s-level classes: the junior year practice course (SW 510) and the twosemester, senior year practice seminar sequence (SW 610 & 612). I employ adult learner-centered and active learning approaches to facilitate positive student outcomes. I incorporate the following elements into my courses: 1) activities and assignments aligned with students real world concerns in practicum, 2) sharing of students personal and practicum experiences related to the class, 3) issues of diversity throughout lectures, activities and assignments, 4) varied instructional methods (e.g., small group exercises, PowerPoint presentations, case examples, and videos) to accommodate different learning styles and 5) principles of active and mutual learning. Teaching Key Words social work practice; adult learner-centered approach; active learning approach Research Interests (Statement) People with serious mental illness suffer from debilitating psychiatric symptoms as well as from significant difficulties participating in many activities of community living. Despite advances in treatment and improved access to care, many people with serious mental illness remain untreated or undertreated. Understanding how to effectively serve this vulnerable population remains an emerging area of research and presents a key challenge to the mental health service delivery system. My scholarship addresses this challenge through my overarching research program regarding mental health outcomes of community-residing adults with mental illness. Within this broad topic, my interest in mental health outcomes has gradually shifted from reducing the negative impact of serious mental illness on individuals (e.g., psychiatric symptoms, hospitalization) to promoting the positive aspects of individuals lives (e.g., functioning, life satisfaction, community living). This change has been informed by my work that provided me with greater awareness of the needs of adults with mental illness, their families and their mental health providers. It fits the strengths perspective principle of our school and the Office of Mental Health Research and Innovation with which I am affiliated. Research Key Words Mental health treatment outcomes; adults with serious mental illness; community integration; collaboration with community-based agencies; Asian and Asian American mental health Research/Scholarly Work Publications 4
