1 Rotary District 6510 Newsletter July 2016 DG Preview of Year I'd like to first take this opportunity to thank Tom Guebert for a year of excellent leadership and setting a high bar for this year. I am honored to be your District Governor during this year of Rotary Serving Humanity. My District focus will be on involvement with local service projects involving children and youth. Specifically I want to highlight the work of our six Child Advocacy Centers located throughout our district. You will hear more about these during my club visits and the district conference. Please let me know of your projects so we can highlight them. Post your projects and events on the district calendar on DAC. And most importantly send photos and a summary for us to include in this newsletter. Don t forget to reach out to local newspaper and social media. The theme of Rotary Serving Humanity is self explanatory. Every year the RI president presents his/her theme for the focus of that year. But in reality we all do this when we service in our community. So service at the local level and beyond is encouraged. The district has resources to help you with issues like membership, club administration, foundation, and any other issue pertaining to Rotary. Please let me or your Assistant Governor know of your needs. We arehere to assist our clubs to be there very best they can be. Let us all have a great year and exceed what we achieved this past year. Editorial It's a brand new year for Rotarians so what better time than now to remind ourselves of our place in the community where we serve as a force for exemplary stewardship and inspiration in the lives of others. As leaders, we are supposed to set the example ALL can live by in order to prosper wholly and individually. Still, we too need a gentle reminder of what it means to be a Rotarian and the responsibilities that go with it. The Four-Way Test and Rotarian Code of Conduct are always there to serve as a universal set of proverbs to guide us down our path of service. Whether it's providing opportunities to the underprivileged in our own hometown or contributing what we can to countries around the world, the work we do is big and it is important. But it's the attitudes we adopt when achieving these goals that should be infectious if we want the next generation to fill our shoes when the time comes. Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary and Rotarians The 2016 edition of the District 6510 Four-Way Test Speech Contest, honoring PDG Blanche Carlton Sloan, will be held at the District Conference in November [1] Information for Clubs [2] Registration [to be completed by the sponsoring club or Rotarian] [3] Information for Participants These three forms are available in DaCdb under the "Files" tab. Two categories of participants are defined: [a] Novice class, for those with little or no speech competition experience, and [b] Competition class, for those having such experience. A cash award will be presented to the highest-scoring participant in each category. The amount of the cash award is dependent on the number of registrations. FINAL due date for paid registrations: October 15. If you are planning to conduct a local competition to select your sponsored participant(s), please contact me. I can supply judging forms, other relevant materials, and 'good practices' information to help your local selection. Further, I would like to attend as an observer as the schedule allows. Maginel Blanche Sloan Remembered Members of the Rotary Club of Carbondale Breakfast, District 6510 and the community as a whole carry heavy yet grateful hearts this summer after the passing of longtime Rotarian and former District Governor, Blanche Sloan. Blanche died on Thursday, June 30. Born January 22, 1924 she blazed a trail for the women of Rotary as she climbed the ranks becoming one of the first female DG's. Her innate passion to help those in need and enriching the lives around her, set her apart and reserve a special place amongst Rotarians as we constantly strive to better the world we live in. Note from RYLA Chair I would like to publicly thank the Fairview Heights Club for their ABOVE AND BEYOND support of RYLA. While they did not have students available to sponsor they have provided $675 to sponsor three students from other areas to attend RYLA. With the funds we are sponsoring a 3rd student from Lebanon as well as 2 from Cahokia/Dupo. I believe this is a great illustration of Fairview Heights supporting the future of Rotary across the district. Thank you, Jason Boone, RYLA Chair

4 District 6510 Conference A message from the district conference planning committee The district's conference planning committee is busy preparing for the Nov 4-5 conference event in Mt. Vernon. The evening will focus, in part, on newly elected district governor Dave Matthews' mission torecognize and raise financial support for the six Child Advocacy Centers who serve our district's children. "We hope to offset some of the financial woes of these agencies due to the the budget in Illinois and are raising monies for these agencies," said Matthews who is challenging each club to participate by either becoming or recruiting sponsors. "If you have a business in your area you think might donate please call me," said Matthews adding that he's more than happy to welcome individual sponsors as well. As of July more than $6000 has been raised for this cause, with the Williamson County Heartland Club donating $1,247. Another large donation of $2500 was received along with several smaller contributions including two individual donations of $500. The committee wants each club to have a "Conference Champion" assigned for the Fall's largest event. "This person will be the contact we have with your club to attempt to get all 48 clubs to send members to the district conference," Matthews said. The committee is recommending the past president from each club to fill this role. "Attending a district conference can be inspiring and we can all learn a lot from each other." The District 6510 Points Matching Campaign Rotary District 1570 of the Netherlands offered our District up to 50,000 Foundation Points that we could use as an incentive to our Rotarians to donate to the Annual Fund of The Rotary Foundation. Through our contacts with our own Mike Nowobilski and Todd Lindley, we ran our campaign in April, May and early June. A huge Thank You goes out to Mike and Mary Jo Nowobilski for their guidance and diligence in dealing with filing the Contribution Forms, the Transfer Forms, and the Foundation record keeping necessary. 6 donations were down. District Foundation Chair Lanis Lenker says that the campaign is responsible for approximately $20,000 in new donations, more than we have had recently. Lanny also notes that we are showing 93 more Paul Harris Fellows than in any previous year. Belize Update The 2016 Belize Children's Project Clinics, held June 20-24, were a huge success with more than 100 patients screened and 17 cases accepted into the program. Shown here, Dr. Coles L'Hommedieu and Shriner's Chief of Surgery Dr. Perry Schoenecker join several members of the Belmopan, Belize Rotary Club. Right now there are three children in special need of host families this year as they will undergo life-changing surgeries this Fall. Kerisa Guild, six, will have scoliosis surgery in October. Marisol Oh, seven, will have surgery on her hip this Fall. Danny Cerrato, six, will have surgery to remove a tumor in his arm. 7 Membership and Foundation Seminar July 23 The upcoming District Membership Foundation Seminar on July 23 at John A. Logan is the perfect opportunity to learn about the Foundation and become an intricate part of it. The foundation encourages club members to attend the event so that individual clubs can hold a club Foundation seminar as well. Planning resources include the District Rotary Foundation Seminar Leader s Guide and members of your district s Rotary Foundation committee.
