Happenings President s Message Fun Fair Bake Sale Help Needed Roses are red, violets are blue We need many more bakers Just like YOU! Bake Sale is in NEED of many more donations of baked goods to sell at the FUN FAIR on February 8 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. We need a variety of items that can include cookies, cupcakes, cakes, cake pops brownies, or any other yummy treat that can be packaged individually or as a larger item to serve for dessert that night!! Please consider helping out as all proceeds go right back to our school. Contact Stacey Bredehoeft at ssb1023@sbcglobal.net if able to help! Drop off times are Friday the 7th at 3:30pm to 4:30pm or Saturday the 8 th from 9:00am to 10:00am. International Night We are still looking for more great countries for International Night on Friday evening, February 21! We're hoping for more volunteers to represent various countries. You would display anything of interest about the country - pictures, artifacts, crafted products, food, costumes, etc. - anything informative about the country. Each country has a table in the multipurpose room. Entertainment will be in the gym. So far the countries represented are Mexico, China, Lithuania, and the Philippines. If you are interested please call Jan Basener at (630) jan@basener.org. Meeting the Lincolns Our next cultural arts assembly is on Monday, February 2nd. President and Mrs. Lincoln will visit classes and put on a presentation full of good lessons for our young friends. The First Couple will share stories about the people and events that influenced their lives. Through engaging conversation they will talk about their youth, education, the struggles of the Civil War, and their personal lives in Springfield and Washington D.C. By the end of the program, the students will know more about the personal Mr. Lincoln,as well as, the professional politician and the issues that troubled the nation in his time. There will be an opportunity to ask questions, so encourage your child to come prepared with thoughtful questions. Please contact Kellee Feeney kfeeney826@gmail.com with any questions. Mrs. Parise is in great need of assistance to help shelve books, assist students as they look for books and check them out, and for various special projects. The Longfellow Running Club will be making its debut in April after Spring Break. It will be open to students in grades 2nd through 5th. Mark your calendars for Kindergarten Round Up to be held at Longfellow School on Thursday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m. to turn in forms. Program will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.

5 Spring 2014 Parent Programming Welcome to Spring Semester of the school year! In our continuing effort to help parents navigate the complicated world that their adolescents exist in, we are offering another series of seminars. These sessions will address some of the issues that parents struggle with as they attempt to provide the guidance and nurturing necessary to move their teen toward young adulthood. Daytime seminars are held at the Wheaton Park District, 1777 Blanchard Road in Wheaton. Evening presentations will rotate between WWSHS and WNHS. Questions can be directed to Gary Luckey and Donna Kozica. There is no cost for the seminars. Please contact Donna at to register for the Daytime Series as seating is limited. Daytime Series A Mind of Their Own February 20, 12:00-1:00 pm, Wheaton Does your child demonstrate the Burger King mindset? I ll have it my way! Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Michael Maniacci will discuss ways to handle teens who are willful and have difficulty accepting your rules. Don t Try Harder, Try Better February 27, 12:00-1:00 pm, Wheaton Author and Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Patrick McGrath, shares his expertise in working with adolescents experiencing anxiety and the impact it has on school performance, social interactions and family relationships. Twitter, Technology and Teens Part II March 5, 12:00-1:30 pm, Wheaton Join technology expert, Eric Slaughter, back by popular demand to continue the discussion on the benefits and pitfalls of the technological super highway driving our teens. To accommodate questions we have extended this workshop by a half hour. The Significance of the Pause March 13, 12:00-1:00 pm, Wheaton Ever find yourself saying to your child, What were you thinking?, only to discover later that they weren t! Join Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Michael Maniacci, as he explores how to assist your child in thinking about the decisions they make and the consequences that follow. Evening Series Outside the School Day January 27, 7-8:30 pm, WNHS Rm 802 Over the course of the past semester, we have heard the views and thoughts of service providers, school personnel and parents, in relation to the extent and occurrence of substance use among our young people. Wheaton Police Officer Ryan Conway, a 10 year veteran, along with a recovering young adult, will give yet another perspective and provide insight that may be helpful for parents as they struggle to understand this phenomenon. Each will detail their experience and a time for questions will be provided. Please plan to join us.

6 Spring 2014 Parent Programming Student Athlete Health: What Every Parent Should Know February 24, 7-8:30 pm, WWSHS Rm 802 Join Marc Anderson, Social Worker at WNHS and Claudia Evenson Director of Outreach at Rosecrance/Naperville as they discuss substance abuse and its impact on our student athletes. Learn to identify drugs of concern, the effects these can have on students and their performance and what strategies parents can employ as they help their adolescent navigate this landscape. The Resilient Parent April 21, 7-8:30 WNHS Rm 802 Come and join the social work staff as we wrap up the year, looking at how we move forward. Engage with us as we identify skills, communication strategies and selfcare methods to help rejuvenate and support parents as we head into the summer months and the next school year. Chris Herren Event March 17, 7-8:30 pm, WWSHS Orange and Black Gym Chris Herren, former professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics and the Denver Nuggets will chronicle his struggles with addiction and his journey both on and off the basketball court. Chris was immersed in substance abuse for much of his basketball career. Alcohol and drugfree since 2008 Chris has refocused his energies to his sobriety and family, carrying this message of hope and encouraging people of all ages to stand up to drugs and alcohol. Chris has done many presentations in the area and we are very pleased to have him come to District 200. Don t miss this event.
