1 When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA always to be there. And for that: I am responsible. AA Principles of the Month Step 8 - Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. Tradition 8 Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers. Concept 8 - The trustees are the principal planners and administrators of overall policy and finance. They have custodial oversight of the separately incorporated and constantly active services, exercising this through their ability to elect all the directors of these entities. Eighth Tradition Checklist 1. Is my own AA behavior accurately described by the Traditions? If not, what needs changing? 2. Do I know who wrote down each one of my Traditions, and why? What would AA be like without them? 3. When I chafe about any particular Tradition, do I realize how it affects the others? 4. Do I sometimes try to get some reward--even if not money--for my personal AA efforts? 5. Do I try to sound in AA like an expert on alcoholism? On recovery? On medicine? On sociology? On AA itself? On psychology? On spiritual matters? Or, heaven help me, even on humility? 6. Do I make an effort to understand what AA employees do? What workers in other alcoholism agencies do? Can I distinguish clearly among them? 7. In my own AA life, have I any experiences which illustrate the wisdom of this Tradition? 8. Have I paid enough attention to the book Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions? To the pamphlet AA Tradition-- How It Developed? Concept VIII Checklist Concept VIII: The trustees are the principal planners and administrators of overall policy and finance. They have custodial oversight of the separately incorporated and constantly active services, exercising this through their ability to elect all the directors of these entities. 1. Do we understand the relationship between the two corporate service entities (A.A. World Services, Inc., the A.A. Grapevine) and the General Service Board? 2. How can the business term custodial oversight apply to the trustees relationship to the two corporate service entities?

HMB AREA 48 OFFICER REPORTS HMB Area Delegate s Report Dear Fellow Members, Recently our very own HMB Area 48 hosted the 43 rd New York State Convention at the Marriot Hotel in Albany, July 20-22nd. I would like to start off by thanking all of those who dedicated their time and effort in making this a very successful event. The event started off Friday afternoon with a meeting and concluded with the first of three featured speakers. Tracy O. from the General Service Office shared her experience, strength and hope with us. Later on that night there was a Alkathon and other entertainment for those in attendance. Saturday saw a full agenda provided for all. This is the day when we have Panels & Workshops on different topics effecting AA. As the Area Delegate it is my job to moderate a Panel and to supply three speakers for the other Panels. I would like to thank Tori R., Nicole M. & Chris S. for sharing on their respective Panels. Many of those in attendance raved on how well prepared those who shared were ALL of them. Saturday night s keynote speaker was Gary L., our current Northeast Regional Trustee, who entertained us all with a wonderful message. On a personal note it was great to see one of our Past Regional Trustees, Mike P. and his wife Jackie, a Past Delegate herself. Mike has been battling health issues but was insistent on making it to our convention to take part and support the event. Thank you Mike & Jackie for coming. After the banquet and speaker meeting we where entertained by DJ Jay with music to dance to. On Sunday morning there was Meditation Meeting followed by the last speaker meeting with the Panel 43 Area 49 Past Delegate Denise B. sharing with us. As many of you know this is the last scheduled New York State Convention. This decision was collectively made last year by the four Areas that make up the state of New York. The reason is simple: a lack of attendance and financial support to continue the event. Although this year s final attendance was 361, it was below what was needed to meet hotel requirements. As I write this, there are 3
4 HMB AREA 48 OFFICER REPORTS, (continued) HMB Area Delegate s Report (continued) folks who are trying to see if this can t be changed. I am not going to use this article to campaign one way or the other on this topic but wanted you to be informed about the status of things. As we often hear, more will be revealed later. I myself had the honor of chairing the last speaker meeting. With this, the collective Areas decided to close the event with A Vision For You from page 164 of the Big Book: We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny. May God bless you and keep you ---until then. Thanks to all of those who have ever participated in or attended this wonderful event. In Love & Service, Keith D Panel 62 Area 48 Delegate Grapevine Conference Committee HMB Area Chair Report It s been a busy summer with group anniversaries, and picnics, and still more to come. The New York State Informational Workshop will be the weekend of August It is being held in Stella Niagara (Niagara Falls), NY, near the Canadian border. If you are planning on attending, the rooms may be sold out but there are motels galore in the area!! (See flyer and registration form, pp. 8-9). Looking ahead to Fall our September Fellowship Day will be September 15, held at St. John s Church in Troy (see flyer, p. 10). All Committees will be meeting, and the Bridging the Gap and Grapevine committees will be electing chairs for DCMs will be meeting as well, and we will have a workshop on Traditions 3 and 4. Lunch will be available, then we will have a business meeting with reports from Area committees, Committee chairs and DCMs. Written copies of your reports are requested, making the Area Secretary s job easier. In October we will have a voting Assembly held in District 14 (see flyer, p. 11). One of the items on the agenda will be the selection of a candidate from our Area for Class B Trustee-at-Large, and hopefully we will have more than one person standing for this position. If we do have two or more we will use the Third Legacy procedure (as recommended by GSO). Looks like a busy and productive Fall coming up. In service, Pat L., HMB Area Chair/Alternate Delegate 4
5 Proposal for October 2012 voting Assembly: Designation of Area Registrar Background Information: Prior to 1981 the Area Secretary was responsible to be the recording secretary, i.e. take minutes at Area Committee meetings and Assemblies; transcribe and make those minutes available to members of the Area at the next event (note that we did not have computers then); keep the records of all the groups in the Area; oversee preparation of the meeting schedule (again, without computers); and prepare, edit and mail out a monthly newsletter to all GSRs, DCMs, Area Committee members and past Delegates. The new secretary announced that that was too much work for one person, so a Newsletter Editor position was created. Additionally a Records Keeper position was created and one of the criteria for the position was to have a computer. The first three Records Keepers were all from Kingston in District 7 (think IBM) and the Area voted to purchase a computer for the Records Keeper for the sum of $3,600. Eventually the Records Keeper position was called Alternate Secretary. Presently the amount of work and the nature of that work done by the Alternate Secretary is not that of an alternate to the Area Secretary it is far beyond that. When the Alternate Secretary rotates out we have had some long lag time while the new person gets up to speed. Proposal: I propose that we designate the position as Area Registrar, a full position rather than alternate to the Secretary. We would then have an Alternate Registrar who could learn about the responsibilities. We could also then have an Alternate Secretary who would fill in for the Secretary when needed. Please note that this will not cost the Area any additional funds. Respectfully submitted, Pat L., HMB Area Chair 5
