I m proud to say that thanks to your support our Big Appeal for Nottingham Children s Hospital has so far raised more than 600,000. This will make a huge difference to young patients at the Children s Hospital by helping to provide a more child-friendly environment and improve accommodation for families whose children are being treated on the wards. I was also delighted to help launch our #BigBark social media campaign in October, where your four-legged friends have been helping spread awareness of the Big Appeal. I met some adorable dogs dressed as Robin Hood at the launch event, and your pictures have been flooding in since then. Take a look on page 3 at pictures taken at the launch. If Robin Hood-themed fancy dress sounds fun to you (it certainly does to me!) then you can take part in our exciting World Record attempt in May. We re aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Robin Hood, all to raise awareness of the Big Appeal. For more information see the back cover. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of Pulse. Barbara Cathcart Chief Executive 2

Special appeals together we can change lives Four-legged friends help us shout about the Big Appeal During October we launched our first ever #BigBark social media campaign, where we asked you and your fourlegged friends to help us shout (or bark!) about the Big Appeal in aid of Nottingham Children s Hospital. Your response was wonderful and we received dozens of pictures of your cute and furry friends dressed up as Robin Hood, the Children s Hospital mascot. The #BigBark campaign is part of the buildup to our Robin Hood themed World Record attempt, which is taking place at Wollaton Park on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May 2018 and will be called Robin s Big World Record. Nottingham Hospitals Charity hopes to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Robin Hood, all in support of Nottingham Children s Hospital and we need your help! For more information about Robin s Big World Record attempt see the back cover, or to get involved charity@nuh.nhs.uk or call

The Big Appeal: how you ve helped so far Thanks to your fantastic support, we have so far raised more than 600,000 for the Big Appeal in aid of Nottingham Children s Hospital. Following this success, the Big Appeal has been extended and now aims to raise 4m by 2021 to improve family accommodation, fund specialist diagnostic equipment and crucial research, and create a more childfriendly environment at the Children s Hospital. With your amazing support, we ve so far reached 15% of our target thank you! If you d like to support the Big Appeal you can use the donation form in Pulse, or call us on to get involved in fundraising. 4

Special appeals together we can change lives Zephyr s baby loss centre sees over 700 visitors Thanks to your support, over 700 people have been able to visit Zephyr s in the centre s first six months of opening. The centre at the City Hospital, which supports families after the loss of a pregnancy, baby or child, also saw a surge in visitors during national Baby Loss Awareness Week, which took place in October. The week included a photography exhibition and spoken word events, and culminated in an open afternoon at Zephyr s on Sunday 15th October. Zephyr s was set up by Carly Williams and her partner Martin Sommerville, in collaboration with Nottingham Hospitals Charity, after Carly and Martin s first son, Zephyr, was stillborn at the City Hospital. The centre offers counselling, bereavement support, group peer support sessions, arts activities and complementary therapies to families affected by the loss of a pregnancy, baby or child all of which are funded by donations to Nottingham Hospitals Charity. Carly, project manager at Zephyr s, said: It can sometimes feel hard to know what to say to a grieving parent for fear of upsetting them or reminding them of the terrible loss in their lives, but the truth is, they re never going to forget, and actually remembering their loved young one with them, acknowledging their loss, or simply using their child s name can do so much to show you care. Working with Forever Stars to help bereaved siblings We re proud to be working with local charity Forever Stars, set up by two parents after their daughter was stillborn, to improve bereavement support for families in Nottingham. Richard and Michelle Daniels, who lost their daughter Emily in 2013, have already opened a 115,000 Serenity Suite at the Queen s Medical Centre to help bereaved families immediately after experiencing a stillbirth or neonatal baby loss, and will soon open a second suite at the City Hospital. Forever Stars are now raising money for a special sibling bereavement counsellor, who will be based at our Zephyr s support centre and will offer vital help to children affected by the loss of a sibling, whose loss is often overlooked. Thank you so much to Forever Stars and all of their supporters. For more information about Zephyr s please visit To help Zephyr s continue to provide support to more bereaved families, please make a donation using the form inside this newsletter, or online at 5

How you can help Make a Will and make a difference Did you know that you can leave a gift in your Will to your chosen area of Nottingham s hospitals? No matter how large or small, the gifts we receive through Wills every year make a huge difference to patients at our hospitals. November 2017 is our first ever Make a Will Month, when we re giving you the opportunity to have your Will written or updated for free! Regardless of whether you choose to leave a gift to Nottingham Hospitals Charity, you can make a free appointment with a participating solicitor to have your Will written or updated. This service usually costs around 100 to 200 for a single Will or 150 to 300 for a joint Will, but our partner solicitors have agreed to waive this fee all we ask is for a donation to Nottingham Hospitals Charity in its place. Making a Will doesn t have to be a daunting or complicated task it is your opportunity to make sure the people you love are looked after when you re gone, and to give back to the causes you care about. Our participating solicitors have a limited number of appointments available, which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To receive a Make a Will information pack or to book an appointment please call Ellis Keay at the Charity on or ellis.keay@nuh.nhs.uk 10

How you can help Local Sainsbury s stores raise thousands! Four local Sainsbury s stores have raised more than 30,000 for Nottingham Hospitals Charity after a year of fundraising. The stores in Castle Boulevard, Beeston, Kimberley and Mapperley Plains fundraised during 2016/17 to support a variety of areas across the hospitals, including Hayward House palliative care centre and the Big Appeal for Nottingham Children s Hospital. During 2017/18 an amazing eleven Sainsbury s stores are each supporting their own chosen area of Nottingham s hospitals! Thank you! If you have a local business no matter how large or small and would like to support us, please call our Corporate Partnerships Officer, Marianne Burchell, on or marianne.burchell@nuh.nhs.uk Shine a light for someone special this festive season The festive period is often a time of reflection when we celebrate the lives of our loved ones, hope for a brighter future for those going through a difficult time, and remember those who are sadly no longer with us. This festive season you can celebrate, hope and remember by dedicating a light on one of our Trees of Light at the City Hospital or Queen s Medical Centre. Your light will shine throughout December for your loved one, family member or friend, and your written dedication will appear in our Book of Life, which will be available to view during December and January. You can donate and make your dedication online at or use the form in one of our Lights to Celebrate leaflets. Alternatively, call us on or charity@nuh.nhs.uk 11
