Overview 2017 BEING RU-FIT (First Year International Transition) Peer Mentor Position Description The Peer Mentor is a leader on campus who will help ease the transition to college for first-year international students. The Peer Mentors will be assigned to one section of the 2017 BEING RU- FIT course and will co-teach with and assist the Lead Instructor to meet the goals of the course and program. II. Roles and Responsibilities The Peer Mentor is expected to: Be an international student Be a Junior or Senior of Rutgers University Co-teach and facilitate the assigned weekly 80 minute section of the 2017 BEING RU-FIT course Enroll in a 2 credit hour of independent study course that will count towards graduation requirements Serve as a role model and mentor to first-year international students at Rutgers University Work to support the mission and goals of the 2017 BEING RU-FIT course Uphold all Rutgers University policies and procedures as outlined in the Student Handbook Hold a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.0 Demonstrate professionalism when working with faculty, staff and first-year international students Be knowledgeable about campus resources and activities and be able to refer students to the correct resource Attend all 14 training sessions: Daily during the first week (Sept 5-8) and then weekly from week 2 till week 11 (September 11-November 17) during the Fall Semester Meet with the Lead Instructor on a weekly basis Read instructional materials as required Complete one reflection paper towards the end of the independent study on the following topics: o What do you believe is the most beneficial experience a first-year international student should have during their first year at Rutgers? How does this experience shape the coming years they will have on campus? o Describe your most challenging experience while working as a RU-FIT mentor, and the steps you took to resolve the situation. o Please give one recommendation on how to improve the BEING RU-FIT course experience, or a topic that you believe should be covered. Include the reasoning behind the recommendation. o How has this mentoring experience benefited you both in terms of academic performance and career preparation Any other duty as assigned. 1

2 III. Compensation Peer Mentors will receive $800 stipend and a letter grade for a 2 credits independent study course that will count towards graduation for their role. The stipend will be paid at the end of the term that they serve. All responsibilities above must be completed to receive the stipend. IV. Peer Mentors Recruitment and Assignment Peer mentors will be recruited and assigned to a course section and paired with a Lead Instructor during the month of August All matches will be made by the Working Group for International Academic Support. V. Application and Selection Process All applicants have to submit: 1) Application Form, 2) resume, 3) cover letter not exceeding two pages and 4) faculty/staff reference by 5 p.m. August 21 to the Dean of International Academic Support, Anu Gupta at: anu.gupta@rutgers.edu. Interview invitations will be sent out by Friday, August 25 and interviews will be scheduled throughout the week of August 28. The final decision of hiring will be made by the Working Group for International Academic Support. For the selected candidates, training will formally start on Tuesday, September 5. VI. Peer Mentor Training: Peer Mentor training is an essential component of the Peer Mentor position. Your attendance at each training session is crucial to your preparation for serving in this role and earning the twocredit for the Independent Study Course. Attend all required training sessions: 14 sessions in total, starting Tuesday September 5 through Friday, November 17. Trainings include the weekly meetings with the Lead Instructor. 2
