We had over 300 parents, guardians and friends sign in at this terrific event. Big thanks to Mrs. Scott, all the special education teachers, the office and cafeteria staff for making this event so successful. What a great and meaningful experience it was for me as I walked around and observed all the parents, students, staff and friends enjoying their time together, taking in the beautiful weather and enjoying the great entertainment. It validated what Porter is all about: COMMUNITY! As we head into the Holiday season, COMMUNITY becomes so important. This week we began our annual canned food drive. Our goal is 5000 cans again this year to be donated to Porter s and St. Vincent DePaul s food banks. We have approximately 20 Porter families who are experiencing great difficulties at this time, and we hope to help them out with their holiday shopping. We will also continue to provide assistance to community members on a daily basis. This support network would not exist without your help. Our school fundraisers, parent volunteers, business partnerships, local church donations, E.C.A. donations, and Eagle Scout Projects, all provide the resources we need to help support our community. Thank you for making this help and support possible. I have always said Porter is a little school with a huge heart and I want to thank all of you and wish you much happiness during this holiday season from the bottom of my heart. Peace, Mr. LaMantia

3 Porter Pledge We, the parents of Porter Elementary School, will strive to: Do our best to start our children s school day with a warm greeting, healthy breakfast and homework checked. Encourage and acknowledge our children s accomplishments, guide them when they need redirection and accept our children for who they are. Emphasize the importance of respect to themselves and others. Teach our children to be responsible for their work and behavior at home and school. Provide a loving, supportive, healthy, and safe environment. By doing so, our children will: See each day as a new day and want to do their best to be successful. Know that we are supportive parents and accept their strengths and weaknesses no matter what. Accept and understand those around them regardless of their race beliefs, or challenges. Continue to grow academically and socially at both home and school. MEDIA CENTER HAPPENINGS We have been busy in the library this past month. We sent letters and cards to the Veterans Hospital in Phoenix for Veterans Day. Our first "Battle" for this year was on November 25th. We have 9 teams this year and they were very busy reading! We will let you know how well they did in next month s news letter. We did not meet our circulation goals for the last two months, so let s get busy reading. Part of the problem is we have many overdue books this year! If your book is a month or more overdue, you can not check out until you return that book. Parents please help your students remember to get books turned in on time. If they are not done with a book they always have the option of a renewal. Letters have gone home so now we need to look for these books and get them back to the library. 4 Porter PawPrints December Winter Break School Closed December 19th Thru January 3rd Holiday wishes To all Our Porter Families! TITLE 1 Parent PAGE Attention, please! Children who know how to pay attention will learn more and do better in school. Help build your youngster s attention span with these ideas. Target interests. Notice what he is interested in. For instance, does he like to watch trucks at construction sites or pick out books about sports at the library? Then, use his interests to help him practice focusing for increasing amounts of time. You might ask him to count trucks while you re in the car or to keep score at a community basketball game. Use a timer. Setting a kitchen timer can help your child stay on task. For example, say, Let s set the timer for 10 minutes and see what Atención, por favor you can make with Legos. Or have him take out craft supplies and make a project in 20 minutes. Play games. Get your child used to sitting for longer periods of time by playing card games together. Start with quick games like Fish, and build up to Gin Rummy or War. Tip: Be sure to play until the game is over. Can Food Drive Ends 12/10 Please Help!

5 Pride of Lions Page 5 INVOLVED PARENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE Sleep is a vital need, essential to a child s health and growth. Sleep promotes alertness, memory and performance. Children who get enough sleep are more likely to function better and are less prone to behavioral problems and moodiness. A common guideline is that children aged five to 12 need hours of sleep, though each child is unique. Good, Sound Sleep for Your Child Making sure your child gets good, sound sleep ensures he or she will have a sound foundation for proper mind and body development. By Michael J. Breus, PhD WebMD Feature Reviewed by Stuart J. Meyers, MD Sleep is no less important than food, drink, or safety in the lives of children. Although this may seem apparent, many of us actually do not allow our children to get the critical sleep they need to develop and function properly. It's certainly not something we do on purpose. As a matter of fact, we often don't think much of it, and that is the problem. With parents working long hours, schedules packed with school, after-school activities, and other lifestyle factors, naps are missed, bedtimes are pushed back, mornings start earlier and nights may be anything but peaceful. Missing naps or going to bed a little late may not seem like a big deal, but it is. It all adds up, with consequences that may last a lifetime. To understand the critical nature of sleep to our children's growth and development, we need to understand more about what sleep does, what healthy sleep is, and what happens when children do not get either the right amount of sleep, the best quality sleep, or both. We also need to understand the role sleep plays in being alert or drowsy, stressed or relaxed, and how that in turn may affect temperament, learning, and social behavior. In his book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, Marc Weissbluth, MD, provides these insightful comments on the functions of sleep: "Sleep is the power source that keeps your mind alert and calm. Every night and at every nap, sleep recharges the brain's battery. Sleeping well increases brainpower just as weight lifting builds stronger muscles, because sleeping well increases your attention span and allows you to be physically relaxed and mentally alert at the same time. Then you are at your personal best." Optimal alertness: Healthy sleep allows us to function optimally when we are awake, to have what is called optimal alertness. We have all experienced varying degrees of being awake, from groggy to alert to hyper-alert. Being optimally alert is the state in which we are most receptive to and interactive with our environment, when we have the greatest attention span and can learn the most. You can see this in a child who is calm and attentive, pleasant, with wide eyes looking around, absorbing everything, one who socially interacts with ease. Altered states of alertness interfere with learning and behavior. Next Meeting DEC 3:00p.m. H O P E C L U B

6 Did you know? HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS the bloodstream at a slower rate. On average someone is killed by a drunk driver every 45 minutes. Alcohol-related crashes in the United States cost the public an estimated $114.3 billion a year. About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives. A first time drunk driving offender on average has driven drunk 87 times prior to being arrested. How to Throw an Alcohol-Safe Holiday Party As a responsible party host, see to it that your guests return home safely. Although the safest approach is to throw an alcohol-free party, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk of abuse if you decide to serve alcohol. These suggestions follow the guidelines of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). 1. Be cautious about you guest list. Don t hesitate to speak in advance to guests who are known to drink excessively. Have them arrange alternate modes of transportation. 2. Be sure to have lots of food on hand so that your guests do not drink on empty stomachs. 3. Consider using a noncarbonated base, such as fruit juice, if you plan to serve an alcoholic punch, so that alcohol is absorbed in to The staff at Porter 4. Be sure to have plenty of nonalcoholic drinks available. Create an environment where people who don t drink alcohol won t feel pressured to do so. 5. Serve as few salty snacks as possible. Thirsty guests tend to drink more. 6. Plan lots of group activities, such as party games, to keep the focus of the party away from drinking. 7. Before the party begins, have your guests determine designated drivers who will not drink any alcohol. 8. Instead of letting guests mix their own drinks, appoint a bartender who can limit and keep track of the amount of alcohol each guest consumes. 9. Close the bar 90 minutes before the party ends. Serve coffee and dessert for the remainder of the party. 10. If any guests have had too much to drink, arrange alternate rides or invite them to stay over. Remember: Keep alcohol away from anyone under the legal drinking age. Never let any guest drive home if you think he or she is intoxicated. Wish you and your family a Wonderful Holiday And hope your New Year is filled with Joy, Happiness, Good Health and Success
