Traveling Mercies Dedicated to helping others while working to remove barriers between cultures so that individuals can share their strengths, assets and blessings with each other. Human equality is most important and can only be achieved through compassion, love and sharing our life experiences. ~ Aldo Magazzeni Founder
About Traveling Mercies Hello; my name is Aldo Magazzeni, and I would like to tell you a little about myself, and a lot about the organization that has become my life s passion Traveling Mercies. Motivated by the need I felt to use my energy, knowledge, and resources to help those of lesser means, I created Traveling Mercies in October of 2007, as a non-profit 501(c) (3) foundation. Today, Traveling Mercies is committed to meeting the diverse needs of those suffering throughout the world. In 2002 I led a local community group to successfully complete the first self-help project in Pennsylvania. It delivered water and sewer to over fifty homes and businesses at a very low cost. In the coming years, my next projects focused abroad. I helped start and support day care centers and shelters for children and adults in Afghanistan and other countries, as well as working to improve hospital conditions in various foreign countries. I started training centers in Afghanistan s women s prison, and personally organized the building of twelve water systems in Afghanistan, which ultimately provided fresh water to over 75,000 people.
In 2005, I traveled to the Gulf Coast shortly after Hurricane Katrina and aided in the recovery effort. Over $15,000 in new computers and supplies were provided to assist damaged schools in rebuilding. In 2006, I went to Kenya where I assisted Father Angelo D'Agostino in building a self-sustaining village for HIV orphans and installed a very large water system for that village. In Ethiopia, I assisted the Mission of Charity, Mother Theresa's home for people sick and dying of AIDS. In 2009, in partnership with the Jesuits and the International Rotary, we provided a well to a school in need in Nairobi, Kenya. I have also been assisting Tashirat Orphanage in Mexico for the last two years with various projects, and support for the children s lunch program. Additionally in 2009, I was able to travel to Italy to provide aid following the devastating earthquake in the Abruzzo Region. My partners abroad are first and foremost the people in the communities we serve and aid in each country, as well as small grass roots organizations including: Voice of Women Organization, Nyumbani Children s Home, Tashirat Orphanage, and others. My affiliation with volunteer groups in the U.S. includes Philadelphia Global Water Initiative, Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, Pennsylvania State University, various schools and Universities, local churches, The Salvation Army, and The Woman of Hope.
Future Projects Afghanistan Complete 6 water projects in Herat Province. Each will provide clean, safe water to many thousands of people. In Partnership with Voice of Woman Organization: Continue support of existing programs; Help create an additional safe shelter house for women; Provide support for the Women with Drug Addiction Project, the first of its kind in Western Afghanistan. The Village of Kawjan Several times every day some men, but mostly women and children climb hundreds of meters to fill containers of water. It occupies a large part of their day and the quantity is limited because hauling is hard work. Children s education, caring for their health and personal lives is secondary at best to survival. The children help with the hauling of the water for it is usually high in the mountains. Approximately 30% of children die before seeing their fifth birthday. This is just one of 18 villages in the Pajsher Valley, Afghanistan that Traveling Mercies is striving to help through the gift of water in this coming year.
Kenya, Africa Complete a project in Kitui, Kenya designed to organize a community produced farming program by installing a water well and drip irrigation system. It will involve organizing 25 villages to establish community farming for food sustenance and sustainability. Finalize a project in Eldoret, Kenya involving the completion and installation of a water well needed by the Sisters of Adoration Order, who care for street children. Tepozlan, Mexico Tashirat Orphanage Continue to help fund and support the daily school food program. Plan, fund, and oversee the installation of water catchments for the school buildings. This will allow the water to be made available daily for the school children, and permit the building of showers at the school for hygiene purposes. Organize and help implement a Special Education Program at the school. Others in need in the US, Italy, and Other Countries Continue to work with partners, both at home and around the world, to be aware of, and react to, the immediate unexpected needs of those requiring assistance. Be it hurricane, earthquake, or famine, Traveling Mercies wants to help in any way it can. The work we do is meant to ease the suffering and enrich the lives of those we meet.
How We Spread the Word Photography Exhibits I find that photographing the people and places met and seen during my Traveling Mercies experiences allows me to memorialize the work we do and the people we touch with our efforts. I enjoy speaking to various organizations, schools and communities, and sharing my photos with them. It allows me to spread the word about the good work being done. These exhibits and speaking engagements help raise both awareness as well as donations for planned projects. The photographs give a voice, not to me or to the photo, but to the people. They provide a way for me to capture and remember them; to record a relationship and an experience with the people I was meeting. ~ Aldo Magazzeni A list of recent photo exhibits and speaking engagements includes Burlington County College, Camphill Village, Chester County Library, Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, American University, Penn State University, Alvernia University and others.
Educational Opportunities Through education, we can increase awareness of the life threatening dangers that the lack of clean water can cause, and create a change in consciousness among those who can help. Traveling Mercies, in partnership with Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, has developed lesson plans to teach high school students about how to interact with foreign cultures, the consequences of unclean water, and how to achieve solutions. I have been invited to speak at many schools to share the message of this lesson plan and the continued work Traveling Mercies is doing in underprivileged countries. Some of the schools that have participated through education and fundraisers include: Cinnaminson High School, Liberty Middle School, Washington I have been repeatedly impressed by their interest, initiative and enthusiasm for our awareness campaign and fundraising project. Twp Orchard Valley Middle School, Friends Central School, Mountain View High School and Bishop Eustace Preparatory School. To schedule Traveling Mercies for a speaking engagement, fundraiser or photography show, please contact us at info@travelingmercies.org. ~Megan Schweitzer Social Studies Teacher Cinnaminson High School
