This workshop will address current recommendations in STI assessment and therapeutic management. Information will focus on STIs commonly seen in this at risk population. Emergency Contraceptive methods will also be reviewed. The workshop will be interactive and participants are encouraged to bring questions. This presentation summarizes the findings from the University of Ottawa s study surrounding sexual assaults and mass gatherings. This research is the first to look at the link between sexual assault and crowd events. Join me in a friendly review of the male anatomy in preparation for the forensic male patient. In this session we will review how best to label and chart the ano-genital male patient exam; proper specimen collection for STI testing; and important patient take home messages upon discharge home. 4 SESSION 1-C Social Work Advanced Training Session Mindfulness, Psychotherapy, and Mind-body treatment Dr. Ron Siegel 1:30 3:30 p.m. Breakout Sessions Part II of II Answering the Hard Questions About Sexual Violence - Claudia J. Bayliff Rape deniers use two main strategies to argue that sexual violence is not a serious problem: (1) they criticize rape statistics as exaggerated reports; and (2) they claim most rape victims lie and most reports of rape are false. This interactive session will help participants formulate good responses to these difficult questions. Sexual Assault Evidence Kits: Updates and Best Practices Renata Dziak, Centre of Forensic Sciences In this session, a scientist from the Biology Section of the Centre of Forensic Sciences, will present the changes to the Sexual Assault Examination Kits that will be distributed in mid In addition, the scientist will provide direction on evidence collection. Managing Non-suicidal Self Injury and Suicidal Intent in the Adolescent Population Judy Waldman The adolescent patient presenting with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) thoughts or behaviour, although common, can be challenging for the forensic nurse. Forensic nurses who work with adolescents will benefit by gaining comfort in caring for patients who exhibit this disquieting behaviour. This session will: 1) help participants to better understand the motivations and function of NSSI in adolescent survivors of trauma; 2) offer guidance in assessing for NSSI and suicide intent; and 3) help providers distinguish between the NSSI and suicide intent. Participants will learn assessment strategies and practical approaches to managing NSSI behaviours, and will have the opportunity to practice these interventions. Working with Pediatric Patients who have Experienced Sexual Abuse: Challenges and Best Practices Karla Wentzel and Corry Azzopardi This interactive workshop for healthcare providers will use case-based discussions to 1) highlight clinical complexities that are commonly encountered when treating children and adolescents with a history of sexual abuse or assault, and 2) explore best practice strategies for addressing them. 4:00 5:30 p.m. Keynote Address SESSION 1-D Noni Classen, Director of Education, Canadian Centre for Child Protection Sexual Exploitation and Luring of Children Online 4 P a g e

5 Session Outlines March 6, :30 10:00 a.m. Keynote Address SESSION 2-A SESSION 2-B Who is in your Waiting Room: Human Trafficking Victim as Patient Helen Roos and Simone Bell Transforming Compassion Fatigue: Creative Tools for Developing Resiliency Diana Tikasz Forensic Photography with Victims of Violence Counseling Techniques for Nurses: The Impact of Assault and Trauma Darcy Turner and Ingrid Cologna Holly Johnson, Department of Criminology, University of Ottawa Preventing violence against women and improving criminal justice and societal responses to these crimes 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Breakout Sessions This presentation will cover current research, trends, and activities involving human trafficking in Canadian communities. Presenters will provide key predator and victim/patient profiles as well as The Game and other exploitation scenarios. Participants will be introduced to recognizing red flags, signs and symptoms, and clinical considerations for care and response through a victim s lens. Compassion fatigue is characterized by deep emotional and physical exhaustion and by a shift in a helping professional s sense of hope and optimism about the future and the value of their work. Compassion fatigue is a normal consequence of working in the helping field. Join your colleagues to discover how to make meaningful and realistic commitments to your own personal and work life as you move towards developing a practice that includes fostering your own well-being and that of the workplace.
