Some groups come together for only a single session, others run over a series of weeks. Each group has a purpose and guidelines that are unique. In the group members may no longer feel alone or different. They may realize that their reactions and emotions are a normal response to the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. All groups are private and confidential. Group members are asked not to share personal or identifying information outside of the group. If you are going to miss a session please call and let the Secretary know. Cross Cancer Institute University Ave Edmonton, AB T6G 1Z2 For further information please ask to speak with a facilitator by calling: Department of Psychosocial & Spiritual Resources Stress Management Group Dr. Ceinwen Cumming & Dr. Noëlle Liwski [6 Sessions] Dates: Friday January 20 February 24, 2017 Time: 1:00pm to 2:30pm Number of Participants: Maximum of 15 To Register: Call This psycho-educational group provides participants with information about coping with stress. In particular, there will be a focus on the stresses that a cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment, and life afterwards can bring to patients and family members. Stress management techniques based on a cognitive model of psychosocial intervention will be introduced and opportunities for practice will be provided. You may receive a call from a facilitator before the group begins. 14 (780)
4 Living Well in the Here and Now: Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Dr. Noëlle Liwski & Dr. Ceinwen Cumming [6 Sessions] Dates: Fridays February 17 March 24, 2017 Time: 10:30am to 12:00pm Number of Participants: Maximum of 12 In this six session, weekly group, an updated form of cognitive behavioral therapy called Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) will be introduced to cancer patients and their family members to help them live full, meaningful lives (as psychologically well as possible). The group will provide participants the opportunity to be more psychologically flexible as defined by ACT. According to ACT, this involves learning to accept what is out of personal control, while committing to action that will improve quality of life by living life according to core personal values. It is expected that, through mindfulness training and other group learning activities, participants will deepen their understanding of their values and create plans for living well in the here and now. Please expect a telephone call from a facilitator before the group begins. Let Music be your Guide Elizabeth Stolte, Music Therapist [3 weeks] Dates: Thursdays January 12-26, 2017 Time: 1:00pm to 3:00pm Number of Participants: Maximum of 10 To Register: Call Music has the potential to transform us. When we engage in music activities, we give ourselves an opportunity for self-discovery. Music can open our hearts and our minds to lead us to self-reflection, and can give us a way to express a multitude of emotions that are within us. In this class you will use music listening, song sharing and drum circles to help you in your journey. Each class will also include music and relaxation. *Please bring a recording of a meaningful song or piece of music to the workshop* 4 New Breast Cancer Patient Group Dr. Jill Turner & Dr. Lauren Johnson [8 Sessions] Dates: Thursdays January 19 - March 9, 2017 Time: 1:00pm to 2:30pm Number of Participants: Maximum of 12 This group is open to newly diagnosed women with Stages 0- III breast cancers. Participants are expected to be on treatment or to be no more than one year post cancer 13
5 Living Lightly: Making an Altered Book Nancy Olthuis Thygesen, Art Therapist [6 weeks] Dates: Mondays February 13 - March 27, 2017 *No Group on February 20 th Family Day Time: 1:00pm to 3:00pm Number of Participants: Maximum of 8 To Register: Call Living lightly is about letting go of the stuff that weighs us down and developing an attitude of living with fewer burdens and encumbrances. An altered book repurposes an existing book by using a variety of art materials in collage, painting, drawing and journaling. An altered book can be a way of a re-writing your personal story on a level of your choosing and re-covering your creative self. Explore the power of imagination and discover your unique images, metaphors and symbols in this process. treatment completion. The purpose of this group is two-fold, with focus on meeting the supportive and informational needs of patients during the cancer experience. Themes which typically emerge from participants sharing include, but are not limited to, coping with breast cancer and its treatment, dealing with body image and sexuality challenges, and managing social support. You may receive a telephone call from a facilitator before the group begins. Creative Support for Teens Dr. Lauren Johnson & Haley Toll [4 Sessions] Dates: Wednesdays January 4 25, 2017 Times: 1:30pm to 3:30pm Number of Participants: 8 Age: year olds Join us for a fun, supportive, and therapeutic group designed to help adolescents cope with a loved one s cancer. Using techniques from both art therapy and psychology, you will learn how to support yourself as your caregiver goes through treatment and gain strength from others going through a similar experience. Expect to engage in mask-making, drawing, and learning about your inner strengths. 12 5
6 Single Session Classes Mindfulness Relaxation Session (Weekly) Jennifer Crete [on-going] Dates: Mondays (except statutory holidays) Time: 1:00pm to 2:00pm Number of Participants: Maximum of 9 To Register: Register weekly by calling These sessions are for patients and family members who would like to try an exercise in mindfulness. You will be guided through a mindfulness relaxation exercise that is designed to increase feelings of calm. Social Work Question & Answer Sessions Social Workers from the Cross Cancer Institute [on-going] Dates: First Thursday of each Month Time: 3:00pm to 4:00pm till Dec 2017 Location: TBA for 2017 Number of Participants: Maximum 15 Spontaneous and Expressive Art Making Janet Stalenhoef, Art Therapist [2 weeks] Group 1 Dates: Tuesdays January 10 & 17, 2017 Time: 10:00am 12:00pm Number of Participants: Maximum of 8 Group 2 Dates: Thursdays January 12 & 19, 2017 Time: 10:00am 12:00pm Location: Westmount Location Number of Participants: Maximum of 8 To Register for either Group Call: Integrating spontaneous art-making with various low skill painting and drawing techniques, this is an invitation to express yourself and have some fun. Step out of the day to day business to slow down to connect with your creative self. The art studio can be a small sanctuary where we can slow time and connect with ourselves. Working with no formal plan is valid. Finding an internal source of inspiration can be a form of emotional liberation. Having a cancer diagnosis can cause significant financial distress, due to such things as cost of medication, parking, and loss of income. If you would like information on what financial and community resources may be available to you, please bring your specific questions with you and register for one of these sessions. 6 11
7 Storytelling through Masks Philiana Wong, Drama Therapist [6 weeks] Dates: Mondays January 30 March 13, 2017 *No Group on February 20 th Family Day Time: 10:00am to 12:00pm Number of Participants: Maximum of 10 To Register: Call Come explore being in a different role or character through masks. In this 6 week drama therapy group, participants will make their own masks and by using mask work, explore how to connect and communicate with one another through body language, mood and tone of voice. Through masks, participants discover how the angle of a face/mask, gesture, pace, stillness and silence all speak loudly without a single word. Participants will be able to keep their own masks. Mind Your Memory Psychologist, Occupational Therapist & Dietitian [Individual Sessions] Dates: Fridays March 10, June 9 or Sept 15, 2017 Times: 9:30am to 11:00am Location: Cross Cancer Institute Room 1504 Number of Participants: Maximum 16 In a supportive group environment, you will gain information on: How cancer and cancer treatment may affect your memory Making proper nutritional choices that feed your mind and your body Strategies that you can use to maximize your memory Down Low on Down There : A Vaginal Health information session for those affected by cancer treatment Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Sexual Health Consultant and Radiation Oncologist [Individual Sessions] Dates: Friday November 17, 2016 Time: 10am to 12pm 2017 Dates: TBA 2017 Location: TBA To Register Call: Are you experiencing: Vaginal dryness or pain? Loss of sexual interest? Questions about vaginal health? Then this workshop will provide an informative session on how to prevent or manage these common changes from cancer treatment. This workshop may be led by the following professionals: Registered Psychologist, Radiation Oncologist, Sexual Health Consultant and/or Occupational Therapist. 10 7
8 Drop-In Sessions No Registration Required HEALING ARTS Indigenous Patient Drop-In Group Dr. Lauren Johnson & Lori Kirkaldy [on-going] Starting January 2017 Date: Wednesdays Time: 9:30am to 11:30am Location: Cross Cancer Institute Lobby (in front of the donor wall) No Registration Required For patients identifying as First Nations, Metis, or Inuit, cancer care may present unique issues. If you have any questions or concerns, or believe you or a family member could benefit from a conversation with a psychologist or Indigenous patient navigator, please stop by our Drop-In table in the lobby at the Cross Cancer Institute. We offer drop-in professional services and information, as well as tea, bannock, and friendship. We look forward to you stopping by! About Arts in Medicine Researchers are finding that creative expression helps patients and family members confront the many complex feelings that come with a diagnosis of cancer. Anxiety, fear of the unknown, vulnerability and the feeling that the situation is beyond one s control are some of the emotions cancer patients can experience during diagnosis and treatment. Since 1996, Arts in Medicine has helped hundreds of cancer patients and their family members move more easily through cancer. Every Child is an Artist. The problem is how we remain an artist once we grow up.
