1 SALZBURG CLEVELAND CLINIC SEMINAR BONE AND JOINT SURGERY January 22 28, fellows from 30 different countries and regions 5 faculty members from the United States and Austria 21 lectures and 6 workshops given by faculty 31 interesting cases presented by fellows 7 cases selected by faculty to be published in the Online Case Library The Salzburg Bone and Joint Surgery Seminar was held at the beautiful Schloss Arenberg between the twenty-second and twenty-eighth of February, Seven faculty members from the United States and Austria lead a group of thirty-eight fellows, forming a group of people from thrity countries and a group with a diverse collective wisdom on bone and joint surgery. The faculty members brought both valuable experience and youth to the seminar, with some faculty members participating for their thirteenth time while others joining for their second time. Together, the faculty prepared an intense, fun, and rewarding week for the fellows, all in the hope of imparting valuable knowledge and facilitating the formation of new friendships. During the week, the fellows had an array of lecture topics, case-presentations, and hands-on workshops to look forward to. In the lectures, they learned of topics ranging from Wrist Ligament Injuries, to Periprosthetic Fractures, and Periprosthetic Joint Infections. Along with these lectures, the fellows had the opportunity to hear about a diverse group of interesting cases presented by faculty members and their other fellows. They also had the opportunity to prepare and present their own unique case, offering a glimpse into their own environment and culture. But, characteristic of any surgeon, the fellows were eager to practice some new techniques they had learned in lecture. The faculty gladly obliged and provided six workshops giving the fellows practice in trauma cases, Arthoplasty, and also more specific hand and ankle labs. The variety of teaching techniques paid off, as the fellows displayed dramatic improvements on their pre- and post-seminar tests, with the average going from 47,30% to 64%. With the traditional Austrian winter holding off the spring for a few more weeks, the fellows enjoyed their time with each other in the cozy Schloss Arenberg. During their time here, they not only acquired new knowledge to be utilized upon returning to their home countries, but also gained valuable contacts and friends they can rely upon in the future. With the help of this newly founded network they can continue to learn about new practices emerging in other countries and can serve each other as companions to tackle difficult cases or rejoice and in good times.

3 SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW Diary of Danijela Brasanac Kovac, MD Clinical Center of Montenegro, Podgorica, Montenegro 23 January, Monday. Schloss Arenberg near the city center, but haven away from the outside world. I was late and came in the morning, after the exciting journey, which I continued by bus because of my car breakdown. Pleasant and friendly staff was here to welcome me. I got sunlit spacious room, with large windows. Beautiful view of the snow-covered surroundings Without noise, hustle and bustle All my senses pleasure. I started the Seminar with the Pre-Seminar Test. Questions were from everyday practice, but it was hard to chose right answers. The moment I realized how much I have to learn Delicious lunch to everyon s taste. I enjoyed it, and met new friends from all over the world. I feel Dining Hal will become the center of interesting discussions. Pleasant surprise was Grand Hal. Complete material were on the desk of each participant. It will help me to participate more extensive and always to recall learned subjects. The Leading Teams Lection was perfect presented by Dr. Mathias Bostom. I learned that energy of The Team is a power for solving problems, and the Leader is the one to direct it towards the goal. Dr. Bostom continued with Workshop How to Present a Case, with very useful informations for all of us. The greatest surprise, and what turned out to be the most interesting part for me was Fellows Case Presentation. Mine Case will be on Thursday, and I can enjoy different ways of solving problems. I was impressed by OMI/AAF Presentation which was shown by Mrs. Elisabeth Bourg. The Seminar lasts for years and provides many doctors to improve their knowledge and skills. I feel a huge sense of gratitude to be a part of it, and I am honored to be taught by some of the greatest experts. Free houres and walk through the city center. In spite of the cold weather, we found Salzburg nice! Tasty dinner and my bed is calling. Full of impressions for the first day! 24 January, Tuesday. Wake up at 6 o clock without any difficulties. After breakfast the seminar started. Hand and Wrist Lectures by Dr. Lana Krang were interesting and important for me, because this is insufficient part of orthopaedic surgery in my country. Coffee break and group photo with Faculty Foot and Ankle Lectures (by Dr. Scott Ellis) - field of my interests, I enjoyed. And wonderful Foot and Hip Workshops. Teachers were kind and willing to answer all of our questions and dilemmas. Fellows Case Presentations and discussions after speeches- cherry on the cake for the end of the perfect day. 4 25 January, Wednesday. Wake up, breakfast, coffee Lectures of bone tumors (by Dr. Reinhard Windhager), for me the most serious and most interesting part of orthopaedic surgery. Insufficient in my country and because of that very important to learn the treatment guidelines. Coffee break and pleasant conversation with participants. Femur Fractures by Dr. David Mayman- familiar problem for all of us. In spite of that, our beliefs are not always correct. Very instructive lecture, there are no dilemmas after it. Again Fellows Case Presentations, and again surprised about how many ideas I have been offered with doctors of different ages and backgrounds. This day we had free afternoon. And it was a good chance to see the Festung Hohensalzburg. Breathtaking view of the beautiful city from the top. Beautiful afternoon to remember. After dinner, meeting at Armenian Lounge like a good tradition. 26 January, Thursday. Ordinary day. It started as usualy at 6:00 am. Serious topics for this day (Periprosthetic Joint Infections and Osseointegrations by Dr. Mathias Bostom; Trauma of Distal Femur and Distal Tibia by Dr. David Mayman complemented with Workshop, and also Knee Workshop). My day was successful, I have learned and worked on problems for my everyday practice. It was the day I presented my Case. I got stage fright like you wouldn't believe! I am thinking that I could have been better, but crazy emotions I m very pleased to Faculty members for interesting discussion after my speech. This day evening we were invited to one of the pubs of Salzburg for beer party, after wonderful Chamber Music Concert. Very amusing time with my new friends, we stayed up late after midnight. 27 January, Friday. After only a few hours of sleep, we woke up ready for the last day. I was thinking what didn t put us to sleep during the Lessons. I suppose it was the professionalism and excellent methodology of all the speakers. They focused us on main points using their examples, interesting stories, always asked questions interactive and exciting way to teach. For this day the topics were Primary Total Knee Replacement and Proximal Humerus Fractures by Dr. David Mayman; Periprosthetic Fractures and Revision Total Hip Replacement by Dr. Mathias Bostom. At the end, I concluded that all Seminar topics were well-chosen, tackled and covered from every aspect and every angle. During the lunch I was informed that my Case was selected for the Online Case Library!!! Happy, happy!!! Case presentations And Post-Seminar Test. I hope I improved my knowledge, and chose the correct answers.

5 Today was Mozart's 261 th birthday. In the afternoon we visited Mozart's Birthplace, and attended a wonderful celebration. Nice to be here on this day. Farewall in the evening houres, and Graduation Dinner. I am honored sitting at the table with Faculty. Friendly conversation, very enjoyable. We received our cerificates, mine was for Excellent Case Presentation. Dr. Mathias Bostom has told his final speech. Tomorrow is departure. Come back to our families, work and daily problems. But this night is going to last a little longer- we have a plane to make a party. Thanks a lot to Faculty and Administration of Schloss Arenberg for this wonderful week. It was beyond my expectations. I gain a lot of new information which I am going to implement in my daily work. I had resolved my doubts during the Lessons and impoved my skills on Workshops. Now, I have more confidence in making decisions about treating patients. I want this Seminar to be the start of an on-going cooperatin and friendship. I wish all the best to AAF and to OMI in the future, and to continues to provide excellent experiences and lessons as those I received. Hope to get a chance to return here in the future. 6 SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW Diary of Ivana Glisovic Jovanovic, MD Clinic for orthopedic surgery and traumatology, Clinical Centre of Serbia, Belgrade, Serbia Sunday, 22 January Arrival. Flight to Vienna, then train to Salzburg. I was very excited, because one of my wishes came true. It was my first visit to this beautiful town. I found Schloss Arenberg very elegant and charming. After welcome reception and very impressive speech of Prof Wolfgang Aulitzky, we enjoyed very tasty dinner and were introduced to each other. The atmosphere was friendly and little shy. But we were at the start. Monday, 23 January And we finally started. Prof Mathias Bostrom and Mrs. Elisabet Bourg, introduced us about the aim and goals of whole seminar, and Open Medical Institute. Pre-seminar test. Hard, but full of very interesting questions. It will be better next time. We came here to learn and exchange of ours experiences. The first faculty Dr Scott Ellis. Magnificent. We were very thrilled! Interesting lecture about Adult Flatfoot Deformity. We learned everything what we need to know about this. Applicable and useful for everyday work practice. Coffees break and relax. After break, we listened from Dr Lana Kang about Hand, Wrist and Forearm fractures. For me (as orthopedic hand surgeon) it was very important and interesting, and good for renewal. Workshop with small beautiful plates. Lunch, talked about impressions. After lunch, Prof Bostrom introduces us with Weill Cornell Medical College and with some leadership skills. Finally, the fellows started their case presentations. Mine was second one. I must say I was a little nervous, because it was my first English oral presentation, but it was passed ok. Other fellows had interesting cases, and very good presentation. And finally, first working day was finished. After lectures our little Serbian-Montenegro delegation (few of us knew each other from long time, nice surprised that we met on the course) and some of our new friends had promenade in historical center of Salzburg. Dinner...The day was finished in Reception Lounge under cheerful conversation. Tuesday, 24 January Wake up, breakfast, new day... Extensive lectures about Wrist Ligament Injury and Wrist and Hand osteoarthritis, by Dr Kang. For me, very important, because it is the main field of my interest. Group photo with faculty. Coffee and magnificent cakes again. The next lectures of phenomenal Dr Ellis helped us to understand basic Management of Hallux pathology. Very, very understandable and applicable (I thought that I can t wait to operate one)! Lunch we talked, laughed a lot. Next, excellent Foot workshop (First MTP Fusion), several interesting fellow case presentations, and helpful hip workshop with Prof Bostrom. The second work day was over. Free time, city walked..dinner..beer in Augustiner Braü. Wednesday, 25 January New day. Tumors. Classy Professor Windhager with his fascinating lectures about Bone Tumor Surgery. Very impressive for all of us. Break..Excellent Tumor related fellows case presentations. Finally, Femur Fractures by Dr David Mayman. Always an interesting topic, with which we are all familiar. Discussion, different opinions...still remains controversial. After tasty lunch, lot of free time. Lot of us together went up to Hohensalzburg Fortress and enjoy spectacular view. Dinner and after... beer again, we went to Stiegl.

7 Thursday, 26 January Fourth day of seminar, already? Time passed quickly. Arthroplasty, impressive lectures by Prof Bostrom about Periprosthetic Joint Infections and Osseointegration. We were honored, because he shears some of his big experience with us. His advices in treatment of these conditions will be useful for future. After break, there was lectures by Dr Mayman about Distal Femur Fractures, followed by workshop. Lunch... We continued with interesting fellows case presentations and in between two sessions knee workshop. Free time for souvenir shopping. Dinner. At the end of day the sound of the piano and clarinet. Enthralling Chamber music concert. Friday, 27 January The last day. Lectures about Periprosthetic fractures and Revision Arthroplasty was very helpful for all of us. Learned from the best! Excellent. We all agreed that we could pass the Post-Seminar Test before lunch. Relaxed lunch..free afternoon. Classy Graduation Dinner. Awards, certificate. Photos with Fellows and Faculty. The party continued at Reception Lounge...Wine, stories, laugh...say goodbay.. Saturday, 28 January The end. Departure to home. I hope I will be back.
