1 Young Carers- Needs assessment I am the Young Carers Lead for Slough Borough Council; I am carrying out a needs assessment to identify the number of young carers in Slough. The aim is use this data to understand the level of support needed to support young carers. I then plan to carry out consultation with young carers to find out what they would like to support their own health and well being. This activity is in line with the Care Act 2014 and the Children and Families Act 2014 which places increased duties and responsibilities on local authorities to support young carers. This includes a duty to proactively identify young carers living within their area as well as a right to a carers assessment. Your assistance is sought in helping gathering this important information by completing the attached questionnaire detailing the numbers of young carers you are working with or aware of within families you may be working with who are residing in Slough Borough Council. Definition of Young Carer - young people who provides regular and ongoing practical, personal care and/or emotional support to a family member who has a physical, learning or mental disability, or who misuses substances. A survey carried out in 2010 by the BBC estimated that there are 700,000 young carers in the UK. Young carers are children and young people who often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. Some of the ways young people care for others are: Staying in the house a lot to be there for them Helping them to get up, get washed or dressed, or helping with toileting Doing lots of the household chores like shopping, cleaning and cooking Looking after siblings, parents or grandparents Providing emotional support or a shoulder to cry on.
