2 WELCOME TO THE INSIGHT TRAINING CALENDAR FOR SEMESTER TWO The Seminar and Training Program has two semesters; February to July and August to December. The Seminar Program and Training Events Program are published twice a year in January and in June. This Calendar shows the INSIGHT workshops that will occur throughout second semester 2013 (August to December). INSIGHT staff are committed to providing best practice evidence based education and training for workers in the alcohol and other drug field. We look forward to seeing you during the year. Please complete and return the Event Application Form to InSight@health.qld.gov.au or Fax: to secure your place. Queensland Health staff must have their line manager sign the application form. Where a fee applies, an invoice will be sent to you/your organisation following your workshop attendance. Most workshops are limited to 20 participants so early registration is recommended. The final date for accepting applications is two weeks before the scheduled course date for all workshops. Please note: Applications will not be accepted after the closing date. Written confirmation of your place in the workshop will be sent after the workshop application closing date to the address you have nominated for correspondence. Fees for training There is no charge for Queensland Health employees for workshops. For non- Queensland Health employees, a $50.00 per half-day fee will apply, and when a course is a full-day the charge is $ This cost includes materials. CPD Points Some professional associations no longer accredit courses for CPD activities (e.g. Aust. Psychological Society and OT Australia). For further information regarding CPD requirements please see the AHPRA website: 1
3 Venues and catering Unless otherwise specified, all training events are held in the Edwards Miller Training Room, 4th Floor Biala, 270 Roma Street, Brisbane. There is no catering provided at the workshops, so please bring your own lunch, drinks and snacks. Tea and coffee will be available. Cancellation policy In the event that you are unable to attend a workshop that you have booked for, please notify INSIGHT on (07) as soon as possible, prior to the workshop date. Course cancellation Applicants will be notified by if courses are cancelled. Parking and transport Rail and bus services are conveniently located near Biala. Parking is available at the Roma Street Transit Centre and the Barracks Secure Parking at hourly and daily rates. We regret that parking is not available at Biala for training events. Seminars in Drug and Alcohol Studies The Seminars in Drug and Alcohol Studies are held at Biala during each training semester on Wednesdays from am. There is no cost for these seminars. No bookings are necessary. Workers in rural and remote areas of Queensland can participate in these seminars via videoconference on a user-pays basis. 4 COURSE CERTIFICATION A Certificate of Completion will be given on completion and submission of Online Induction Material Modules multiple choice assessment. A Certificate of Course Competency will be given when all competencies are met in Core Skills workshops. Certificate of Attendance will be given for full attendance at Specialised AOD workshops. Robert Assan INSIGHT WORKSHOPS TRAINING STAFF Robert is the Indigenous Education and Training Officer. He has a sixteen year background working in the Alcohol and Drug field. Over the past seven years, Robert has been dedicated to Training and Education. During this time, he has delivered the IRIS and Brief Intervention workshop at multiple sites across Australia. Rosa Bibby Rosa is the Dual Diagnosis Clinical Nurse Consultant. She is experienced in both mental health and alcohol and other drug fields and has been extensively involved in clinical service delivery. Margaret Ness Margaret is a psychologist and the Senior Clinical Education Coordinator at InSight. Her experience in the alcohol and other drug field spans across both research and clinical arenas in the capacity of a psychologist and also as a registered nurse. Dr Carla Schlesinger Carla is a clinical psychologist and the Director, Workforce and Quality Clinical Service Development. She has a particular interest in group therapies, mindfulness based interventions and in the cognitive and behavioral factors related to drug misuse. 3

6 ORIENTATION and INDUCTION EVENT #: STAFF ORIENTATION PROGRAMME THURSDAY 1 AUGUST 2013: 9.00 AM 1.00 PM and FRIDAY 2 AUGUST 2013: 9.00 AM 3.00 PM The staff orientation programme provides all new staff to the Alcohol and Drug Service (ADS, Metro North Hospital and Health Service) with an orientation to the Service. New staff working in other Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Services within Queensland Health are also welcome to attend. The programme will cover ADS core knowledge and overview: structure and functions ethics and practice administrative roles clinical practice. Cost: No charge ONLINE INDUCTION MATERIAL InSight has developed a series of online modules aimed to provide health workers with knowledge based material to facilitate induction to the AOD field. All modules are in PDF format, with file sizes indicated. 7 CORE SKILLS TRAINING EVENT#: INTRODUCTION TO DUAL DIAGNOSIS FOR AOD STAFF MONDAY 26 AUGUST and TUESDAY 27 AUGUST AM 4.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 12 AUGUST 2013 PLEASE NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO STAFF WORKING IN THE AOD FIELD WHO ARE LOOKING TO DEVELOP SKILLS IN MENTAL HEALTH. This two-day course is designed to assist participants gain an understanding of Dual Diagnosis and how it applies to AOD clients. Topics include: overview of comorbidity classification of mental health disorders assessment and identifying comorbidity management and treatment working collaboratively specific population groups. Cost: $100 Queensland Health staff free Certificate of Course Competency if core skill requirements are met. EVENT#: AOD CLINICAL ASSESSMENT TUESDAY 8 OCTOBER AM 4.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 24 SEPTEMBER 2013 This interactive workshop will introduce participants to clinical assessment for alcohol and other drug problems. It will include: raising the issue of alcohol and other drug use with clients screening instruments assessment instruments biopsychosocial elements of assessment situational alcohol and other drug risks practical skill development exercises. 8 CORE SKILLS TRAINING EVENT#: INTRODUCTION TO MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING FOR DRUG USE TUESDAY 22 OCTOBER AM 4.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 8 OCTOBER 2013 This is a workshop for those wanting to develop core skills in managing clients who are ambivalent about making change to their drug use. The interactive skills based workshop will cover: an overview of the Stages of Change model motivational interviewing principles and micro-counselling skills brief motivational assessment motivational interviewing strategies practical skill development. Cost: $100 Queensland Health staff free Certificate of Course Competency if core skill requirements are met. EVENT#: RELAPSE PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT TUESDAY 12 NOVEMBER AM 4.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 29 OCTOBER 2013 Many clients experience difficulty maintaining their drug use goals. This workshop will provide practical and positive strategies to assist clients in preventing and managing relapses to drug use. Areas covered will include: precursers of relapse the Resolution Breakdown model relapse prevention and management interventions practical development exercises. 11 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING EVENT#: CRYING ON THE INSIDE: HOW TO HELP AOD CLIENTS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMA TUESDAY 20 AUGUST AM 4.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 6 AUGUST 2013 This one-day workshop is framed within a stepped care model where workers at Level 1 are aware of, and respond sensitively to people who have experienced trauma. Workers at Level 2 are able to screen for trauma, assess the link between trauma-related symptoms and substance use, and provide traumainformed interventions that address this link. Level 3 workers are trained to provide specialist, trauma-focused treatment. This workshop is intended to develop the skills of Level 2 AOD workers (i.e. it is not suitable for Level 3 trauma-focused specialist workers). Topics will include: The difference between trauma-informed and trauma-focused interventions How to use stepped-care to respond to clients who experience traumarelated symptoms during AOD treatment How to identify signs of trauma and conduct trauma-informed screening and basic assessment Trauma-informed practice strategies to improve AOD treatment outcomes Key strategies in developing a trauma-informed service Essential reflective practice skills when working with traumatised clients. At the completion of the workshop, participants will have an understanding of: How to respond to clients with trauma-related symptoms in an AOD setting within their current skill level and available resources Professional issues, such as boundary containment, vicarious trauma and worker well-being and how these issues can impact on AOD treatment The range of evidence-based, trauma-focused treatments that are available and how and when to refer a client for specialist treatment. 12 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING EVENT#: ADOLESCENT CANNABIS CHECK-UP (ACCU) THURSDAY 12 SEPTEMBER AM 1.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 29 AUGUST 2013 This interactive workshop is suitable for anyone who works with clients who use cannabis and needs a structured intervention. The intervention is comprised of an individual assessment session followed by a personalised feedback session delivered in motivational interviewing style. An optional skills based session is offered in relation to behaviour change. Participants will be taken through the intervention and familiarised with the material. This training aims to: Enable participants to implement an evidence-based motivational enhancement intervention with their own clients. This workshop is most suitable for workers who either work opportunistically or who choose to provide a brief intervention. This intervention is for cannabis users irrespective of their treatment seeking status. Prerequisites a good understanding of Motivational Enhancement theory. Participants will be asked to participate in a 3 month follow up. Cost: No charge Note: This workshop will be co-faciliated by the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC). 11
13 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING EVENT#: INDIGENOUS RISK IMPACT SCREEN (IRIS) AND BRIEF INTERVENTION THURSDAY 19 SEPTEMBER & FRIDAY 20 SEPTEMBER AM 4.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 5 SEPTEMBER 2013 This workshop is for clinicians who wish to promote culturally competent practice that contributes to the improvement of health care service to Indigenous Australians. The IRIS screening instrument is a culturally validated early intervention tool that helps identify risks involving alcohol and other drug use and to manage associated mental health issues. This workshop aims to provide knowledge and skills in the use and implementation of the IRIS Screening and Brief Intervention Tool. By the end of this workshop participant will: have gained an understanding of cross cultural issues be able to administer the IRIS screen be able to perform a brief intervention be able to develop a case management plan for Indigenous clients. Cost: $150 Queensland Health staff free EVENT#: INDIGENOUS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING THURSDAY 3 OCTOBER AM 1.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 19 OCTOBER 2013 Hospitalisation for mental health and behavioural disorders due to psychoactive drug use is markedly higher for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people than other groups. Cultural safety is considered an essential component of any mental health intervention with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This workshop will examine how to best work with Indigenous clients whose social and emotional well being is affected by their use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs. 14 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING EVENT#: UNDERSTANDING EMERGING PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCES THURSDAY 10 OCTOBER AM 12.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 26 SEPTEMBER 2013 This workshop will provide participants with an overview of the emergence of new substances such as synthethic cannabinoids, analogue stimulants and hallucinogens. It will cover the latest developments in this area including current knowledge of potential risks and harms as well as tips for workers in assessing and responding to the use of emerging psychoactive substances. Cost: No charge Presenter: Dovetail team EVENT #: BRIEF INTERVENTIONS IN FAMILY SENSITIVE PRACTICE WORKSHOP TUESDAY 15 OCTOBER AM 4.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 1 OCTOBER 2013 This workshop will utilize the systemic metaphor to enable the practitioner to work effectively within interacting systems, whilst providing efficient, impactful therapeutic care to clients. The workshop is suited to any helping professional working from a family-sensitive perspective. Topics covered will include: A New Framework: Open Therapeutic Stance with Critical Discernment. Classic Brief Interventions: Strategic Technique and Systemic Feedback The New Classic Brief Interventions: A Performance Model Therapeutic Feedback: To family, teams and outside professionals. Whose Agenda? Responding to others requests while not adopting their agenda. Professional and Therapist: Being a therapist and being a team member simultaneously. 15 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING EVENT#: QUITTING CANNABIS 1 6 SESSIONS TUESDAY 19 NOVEMBER AM 1.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 5 NOVEMBER 2013 This workshop is specifically designed for clinicians who treat people with cannabis use problems. It covers a comprehensive, evidence-based intervention which the clinician may deliver over 1 6 sessions. Some strategies consist of behavioural self monitoring, withdrawal symptom management, mastery of urges and cravings, relapse prevention. The intervention is supported by material which will be demonstrated and provided to participants. This training aims to: Enable participants to implement an evidence-based structured CBT intervention with their own client population. The intervention is specific to treatment seekers. Most relevant for clinicians who engage in face to face counselling on a long term basis and who wish to improve or acquire new skills. Maximum of 15 participants per workshop with a prerequisite of a thorough knowledge of Motivational Interviewing and CBT. Clinicians will be asked to participate in a 3 month follow-up evaluation. 16 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING EVENT#: COURSE FOR NURSES: MANAGING DETOXIFICATION AND WITHDRAWAL MONDAY 2 DECEMBER to FRIDAY 6 DECEMBER 9.00AM 5.00PM BOOKINGS CLOSE 18 NOVEMBER 2013 PLEASE NOTE COURSE PREREQUISITE: Participants must hold current nursing registration with AHPRA. This course is offered to registered nurses across Queensland. The aim of the course is to develop knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of alcohol and drug misuse. The course combines structured theoretical and clinical experiences as well as a knowledge and skills assessment. All presentations are delivered by experienced practitioners. The clinical practicum component will be supervised by experienced practitioners also. A sample of areas covered during the course includes: Queensland detoxification and alcohol withdrawal clinical practice guidelines for ambulatory and inpatient detoxification Assessment, management and treatment of major drug classifications including alcohol, tobacco, benzodiazepines, opioids, psychostimulants, volatile substances and cannabis Practicum in a Qld Health detoxification facility. Cost: $200 Queensland Health staff free NOTE: Your travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of you or your service. Your service is responsible for any staff replacements or backfilling costs while you are attending the course. Certificate of Course Competency if core skill requirements are met. 15
