ACTION PACK Learn how you can help share the power of a wish!
Introduction On behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic and the children whose lives we touch, we are pleased to introduce you to a wonderful program called Wishmakers On Campus. This program gives college students the opportunity to help sponsor wishes for children with lifethreatening medical conditions. Participating in Wishmakers On Campus is beneficial not only to children who will receive the gift of a wish, but also to the students who help make those wishes possible. Lessons learned include the importance of community involvement and philanthropy, leadership skills, building self-esteem, and helping students learn how to work together towards a common goal. This all happens while helping others and having fun! As students and their organizations look to get involved in community service projects, this is a fun and easy way to start. To answer many of the questions you may have and provide detailed information about the program, we ve created this Wishmakers On Campus Action Pack to help you get started! Action Pack Includes: Make-A-Wish Foundation Information How My Fundrasing Will Help Wishmakers On Campus Program Ideas How To Get Started Fundraising Form Wishmakers On Campus Fundraising Guidelines You can also find Wishmakers On Campus information and forms at If you would like to start helping wishes come true through the Wishmakers On Campus program, please contact us by calling the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic office at or continue with your regional office representative. Thank you in advance for helping to share the power of a wish! We can t wait to help you help kids! Best Wishes, Maura Harty President and CEO
Make-A-Wish Information Mission Statement The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. How We Started The Make-A-Wish Foundation began in 1980 when Chris Greicius a seven-year-old boy from Phoenix, Arizona was granted a wish to become a police officer for the day. Touched after hearing his story, a group of concerned Maryland residents hoped to bring similar happiness to local children battling life-threatening medical conditions. In 1983, the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded and granted its first wish: sending a little girl and her family to visit the beach in Ocean City, Md. Currently celebrating more than 28 years of granting wishes, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic has granted the wishes of more than 7,000 children. Annually the Foundation touches the lives of around 400 children between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 residing in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia. Wishes generally fall into one of four categories: I wish to have... a shopping spree I wish to meet... Emeril Lagasse I wish to be... a fashion designer I wish to go... see the birth of harp seals Samantha, age 5 Alexander, age 15 Cara, age 16 Ted, age 12 Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic Offices Mid-Atlantic Chapter Headquarters Office ph fax Delaware Regional Office ph fax Baltimore Regional Office ph fax Northern Virginia Regional Office ph fax

Fundraising Ideas Make-A-Wish Money Week On Monday, students donate their pennies; on Tuesday they donate nickels; on Wednesday they donate dimes; on Thursday, donate quarters; and on Friday they donate one dollar bills. Wish Upon a Star Event College students cut out and decorate stars. Students purchase the stars for $1 each and write their wish on them. You may choose to display the stars in a prominent location, such as hanging them in the dorms or student union. School Marathon Regardless of the type of marathon, the rules are all the same. Students get pledges from friends and family then do the marathon activity for as long as they can. The student(s) who raise(s) the most money can win a special prize. You can also create and sell marathon T-shirts. Some ideas for marathons include: dance-a-thon, walk-a-thon, bowl-a-thon, or come up with one of your own. Sales Organize a bake sale, garage sale, cookbook sale (with favorite recipes from students), candy sale, flower sale, book sale, holiday gift baskets sale, etc. Use your imagination! Wash for Wishes Car Wash Work with a local business with a big parking lot and water supply to hold a car wash. You can even ask your local radio station to donate advertising to promote the event. Spaghetti Dinner or Pancake Breakfast Work with a local restaurant or have a group of students cook the meal. Charge a small admission fee and invite students, friends, family and residents in the community. Other ideas Dances Movie Night Campus Scavenger Hunt Pie Eating Contest 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Concert Bowl-A-Thon Carnival You can try one of the ideas above, or come up with your own Wishmakers On Campus fundraising idea. More ideas can found on our Web site at

Fundraising Guidelines Thank you for helping us make wishes come true! In planning and holding your fundraiser, please remember the following: Solicitation We do not allow door-to-door or telephone solicitation. Use of Our Name and Logo Please use care when using the Make-A-Wish Foundation name and logo. Note that Make-A-Wish is spelled with a capital A and with hyphens. Also, please do not alter our logo or name by customizing it to your specific event. Taking care in these matters helps us protect our brand. The first time the name Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic is used, the symbol must be used and superscripted. Before distributing any web references, printed / promotional materials or press releases, each item must be approved in advance by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic. Language to Use When referring to our wish kids please do not use the words/phrases such as terminally ill or dying, or last wish when referring to our wish kids. These types of labels can instill a sense of defeat and can be counterproductive as our wish kids fight to overcome their illnesses. Many of these children are able to beat their illnesses, and we believe in the importance of keeping a positive mind set. Our mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Some guidelines to indicate your fundraiser is benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation are as follows: What portion of proceeds goes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation If all money collected is going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation The Language to Use 100 % of all proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic If all money minus your expenses on the event is going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation If a specific dollar amount from the purchase of a product is going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, you must state the dollar amount If a percentage of the proceeds are going to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, you must state the percentage 100% of all net proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic Example: For every cookie we sell on Sunday, $1 will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid- Atlantic Example: 25% percent of all proceeds from X event will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid- Atlantic If you would like any more information or need assistance with our fundraising guidelines, please contact the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic office. Thank you again for your support!
