Making Alcoholics Anonymous*Easier *NA too

Alcoholics Anonymous Narcotics Anonymous What is? The primary objective is to equip clients to deal with the experiences that they may encounter during support group meetings. is meant to alleviate newcomers resistance to AA/NA so they are able to understand how the fellowship of the AA/NA programs will help in their recovery process.

What is the History of? The program was developed in 2002 by members of the Alcohol Research Group with funding from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Based on research which shows the effectiveness of the Twelve Step Facilitation, helps facilitate successful transition into the recovering way of life. Research shows that clients completing the Program have evidenced 10% higher abstinence rates.

What is the Program Structure? consists of a six week program, each session is minutes long. The structure of the Minnehaha County program is closed, however the program has the potential to be an open group. Why a six week program? This program should be consistent with the length of outpatient programming Overall this program should be short to minimize the time commitment to the client This program needs to cover the key components and objectives of 12-step program involvements

Why in South Dakota? Drug and DUI courts in Minnehaha County were recognizing resistance from clients in regard to attending and/or approaching AA/NA meetings. As problem solving courts, Second Circuit wanted to see clients willingly participate and remain invested in recovery support groups. The courts found that educating clients on the proper means and approaches of attending support group meetings was crucial to the client s recovery.

Who Facilitates? Monica Bakker ASW; ACT, Addictions Counselor Mona Miller ACT, Addictions Counselor All sessions should be led by an active AA or NA member who is also a skilled expert at facilitating groups.

SESSION CONTENT Introduction Spirituality Principles, Not Personalities Sponsorship Living Sober

Introduction Session Focuses on the benefits of attending AA/NA and how to center on the right meetings. Homework assignment: Go to an AA/NA meeting in the next 7 days Write down what you did/didn t like and any questions you may have Be prepared to share your experience and how it felt Read The Doctors Opinion from the AA Big Book 4 th Edition OR Who is an Addict from NA Book 6 th Edition

Spirituality Session Provides clients with a wide range of definitions of spirituality that do not all require a religious orientation or belief system. AA is a spiritual program, but not a religious program. Homework: Go to an AA/NA meeting in the next 7 days Talk to someone you don t know, who has more sobriety than you, after the meeting Be prepared to share your experience and how it felt Read Bill s Story From AA Big Book 4 th Edition OR Recovery and Relapse from NA 6 th Edition

Principles, Not Personalities Session Deals with myths about AA/NA, different types of AA/NA meetings and the AA/NA rituals. Homework: Go to an AA/NA meeting in the next 7 days Ask someone you don t know, who has more sobriety days than you, for their telephone number Talk to them on the phone (do not just leave a message) before the next session Be prepared to share your experience and how this felt Read More About Alcoholism from AA Big Book 4 th Edition OR Just for Today Living the Program from NA 6 th Edition

Sponsorship Session Explains the function of an AA/NA Sponsor, offers recommendations on how to pick the appropriate person and includes various role-playing strategies. Homework: Go to an AA/NA meeting in the next 7 days If you don t have a Sponsor, ask someone to be your temporary Sponsor If you have a Sponsor, connect with them before the next session Be prepared to share your experience at next week Read Sponsorship Pamphlet

Living Sober Session Means for staying sober are tackled: triggers to relapse, service and avoiding slippery people, places and things. Homework: Go to an AA/NA meeting in the next 7 days Do something social with one or more people from AA/NA who have a longer sobriety period than you Be prepared to share your experience at next week Read pages 5-10 from the Living Sober Book

Literature Needed: AA Big Book NA Narcotics Anonymous Book AA Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions Book Living Sober Book Pamphlet on Sponsorship AA/ NA directories in your area

Recovery is possible. But it takes work. After treatment is finished, everything is NOT automatically fine again. Recovery takes commitment every day, through treatment and beyond. -Anonymous
