4 REPORTS ON PAST EVENTS... A warm greeting was extended by President Marianne as our members gathered to welcome District Chairman Alisson Smith at Greenhills Country Hotel on Wednesday 9 th March. President Marianne presenting District Chairman Alisson Smith with a cheque. Following our business meeting, President Marianne invited our District President to speak. D.C. Alisson thanked all the members who had taken such a lot of trouble to make her feel so welcome following her early morning arrival time in Jersey. Vice President Janet Marshall had collected Alisson and driven her around the island. A delicious breakfast and warm hospitality was enjoyed by Alisson, Janet Marshall and Sue Chipperfield at the home of Kathleen Coles. Alisson had the opportunity to familiarise herself with the history of our club through conversation and also the photographic archives compiled by club correspondent Val Nibbs. Liz Lister had volunteered to take Alisson back to the airport after the event.

5 Alisson said that she felt very proud to be a member of Inner Wheel which she had first joined in 1997 in the Isle of Wight. She later became a member of Lymington Inner Wheel Club. D.C. Alisson considers that we are a very busy club, and was pleased to have been introduced to staff at the recently refurbished Good Companions Club that very morning, and gather an appreciation of the work done there. In her view it is the fully programmed Inner Wheel Clubs that survive. There is also a great deal of enjoyment derived through socializing. She regards our clubs as being unique and united in the way we care for each other. She went on to talk about the Peace Jam, and thanked us for supporting the young carers at Honey Pot and the British Heart Foundation Charity. President Marianne thanked District Chairman Alisson for her visit and presented her with a cheque for her chosen charity. We then adjourned for an excellent lunch in the Greenhill s restaurant. Following lunch, vice President Janet Marshall introduced our Guest Speaker, Jim Hollywood of the Jersey Alzheimer s Society. This was a very interesting and relaxed talk delivered in Jim s own unique style. Alzheimer s is a medical condition that is a form of dementia. It tends to arise between the ages of 65 and 70 though in rare cases, younger people have been affected. In the Western world 1.5% of the population are affected, and it is therefore probable that between 13 and 14 hundred are affected in Jersey. There is no cure, but there is hope. The degenerative disease of the brain causes muscles to get weaker as the brain becomes weaker. Memory function then deteriorates. The best treatment is emphatic, sympathetic and compassionate care at home. This quality of care is best administered by the patient s own family wherever possible. When making conversation with an Alzheimer s sufferer, it is better not to ask too many questions that involve using the memory, or making decisions, or solving problems and self care may also prove

6 challenging. Making a cup of tea involves a set sequence of events and such a sequence can also become confused. Small changes may be helpful e.g. Slip on shoes are easier to manage than lace up shoes. The care often rests with the spouses who are themselves ageing. A principal carer can buy in care, but it is very expensive. Jersey Alzheimer s Association was formed in April Jim cut ties with the Mainland and formed a local organization. Local corporate groups often choose J.A.S. as their chosen charity and all fundingabout 200,000 per year is spent locally. Considering there are so many charities in Jersey, it is gratifying to be selected for funding. A Day Care service is run on Saturdays at Overdale between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00p.m. This gives carers some respite as a specially devised programme is available for patients and lunch is provided also. This costs about per year to run. On Friday afternoons St. Saviour s Parish Hall run a programme of musical memories and exercises of which 30 to 40 people attend and they are found to be very responsive to this type of activity. Other social activities are an Arts Appreciation group on Wednesday afternoons near to Plat Douet School. Splash Chat is a swimming group at the Waterfront. A friendship group meets once a month for patients and Carers. People who are concerned about being diagnosed with Alzheimer s should always consult their G.P. first and if necessary they can be put in touch with the Memory Clinic. Jim firmly believes that behaviour that is good for the heart is good for the head, so exercise is important and we should all engage in activities that challenges the mind. Engaging in social activities is also important for our general well being. Vice President Janet Marshall thanked Jim for his talk and he was informed that his charity will be receiving a donation from our club as it is one of President Marianne s chosen charities.

7 Maggie Atkinson assisted with the Easter Lunch held at the club on the 23 rd March. It was a very busy day and there was an excellent raffle. ROTERY DRIVE AND TEA SATURDAY 23 RD APRIL at 2:00p.m. So far we have 3 helpers for the morning and 3 for the afternoon, plus Kathleen Coles and Maggie Atkinson. Anyone who would like to help in any way should get in touch with Maggie or Kathleen. Jean Llewellin delivered 10 Lemon Drizzle cakes to the club last week for storage in the freezer and some will be used for the event. It is expected that catering will be for about 60 people. ROTARY CELEBRATION DINNER WEDNESDAY 27 TH APRIL Bob Marshall is organizing a three course dinner and the cost will be 20. Cheques should be made to The Rotary Club of Jersey. The chefs were supported by Rotary during their training and will be preparing the food. If you have not already put your name down through Rotary, Maggie Atkinson is organizing an Inner Wheel group for anyone who would like to go. Please get in touch with her. There will be a raffle at this event and all funds will be for the Good Companions. Any unwanted gifts would be welcome and bottles are always popular. Kathleen attends the monthly Rotary Management Committee Meetings and is able to report on any matters which affect us.
