2 Invitation The Children s Hospital Education Research Institute (CHERI) is proud to present our annual conference being held on the 6th and 7th September Due to the success of past conferences we have moved to a larger and more accommodating venue this year The Sebel Parramatta. Our conferences focus on bringing together the worlds of health and education by presenting evidence, best practice and professional expertise so as to enhance the health and well-being of school-aged children. This year s conference is: Promoting Resilience: Stacking the Odds in Kids Favour. Our changing social landscape entails the need to face new challenges in supporting children and adolescents. Consequently, the need to promote resilience in order to help children face these challenges is vital. This conference aims to provide information and strategies on how to build resilience, to help stack the odds in kids favour. Why do some individuals bounce back from these difficult circumstances and others don t? The difference is resilience. More resilient people are able to cope and adapt successfully in a dynamic manner to often challenging circumstances. This year s conference Promoting Resilience: Stacking the Odds in Kids Favour will focus on how we can build resilience in children and adolescents. This conference aims to provide evidence based information, as well as practical strategies on how we can foster resilience in children. Presentations include: Is there evidence in favour of building resilience? Strategies to build resilience in children Strategies to prevent and intervene with bullying what is effective? Effective coping strategies for adolescents Fostering psychological wellbeing Enhancing teacher resilience and promoting resilience in the classroom This conference will be of interest to psychologists, school counsellors, guidance officers, school executives, teachers, support and special education teachers, allied health and medical professionals.

Speakers Dr Sam Goldstein, Assistant Clinical Instructor, School of Medicine, University of Utah and Clinical Director of the Neurology Learning and Behaviour Centre, Salt Lake City.

He is Clinical Director of the Neurology Learning and Behavior Center where he conducts evaluations and consultations as well as providing treatment services to approximately 200 individuals each

3 Speakers Dr Sam Goldstein, Assistant Clinical Instructor, School of Medicine, University of Utah and Clinical Director of the Neurology Learning and Behaviour Centre, Salt Lake City. Dr Goldstein is a psychologist specialising in school psychology, child development and neuropsychology. He is Clinical Director of the Neurology Learning and Behavior Center where he conducts evaluations and consultations as well as providing treatment services to approximately 200 individuals each year. Dr Goldstein s publications include a number of guides for teachers, psychologists and parents concerning child development, attention problems and brain injury, award winning programs dealing with attention disorder, depression, resilience and education, journal publications, books and over 40 chapter contributions. Recent relevant books include: Raising Resilient Children: Fostering Strength, Hope, and Optimism in Your Child, Raising Resilient Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Assessment of Impairment and Managing Children s Classroom Behavior: Creating Sustainable Resilient Classrooms, Nurturing Resilience in our Children: Answers to the Most Important Parenting Questions, The Power of Resilience: Balance, Confidence, and Personal Strength in Your Life, Angry Children, Worried Parents: Seven Steps to Help Families Manage Anger, Seven Steps to Help Children Worry Less, and Angry Children, Worried Parents. He currently serves as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Attention Disorders and sits on the editorial boards of six peer reviewed journals. He is co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Child Development. Dr Goldstein is also coauthor on a range of published psychological tools including of the Autism Spectrum Rating Scales, Comprehensive Executive Functioning Inventory and the Cognitive Assessment System (2nd ed n). Dr Erica Frydenberg, Associate Professor in Psychology, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne. Erica Frydenberg is a clinical, organisational, and educational psychologist whose work has focused on coping in children and adolescents. She practiced extensively in the Australian educational setting before joining the University of Melbourne. She has authored books, chapters and over 100 journal articles in the field of coping. She has also published psychological instruments to measure coping and developed programs and a CD-ROM to teach coping skills. Her books and programs include: Think Positively: A Course for Developing Coping Skills in Adolescents is a how to guide for teachers and other professionals working with adolescents to teach them useful and productive ways of dealing with problems or issues they may have or may come across. Success and Dyslexia: Sessions for Coping in the Upper Primary Years is an evidence-based program that assists all upper primary students, but especially those with dyslexia, to increase their ability to take control of and cope well with the problems that occur in their lives. She has also published The Early Years Coping Cards, the Adolescent Coping Scale-2 and Developing Children s Coping in the Early Years.
