3 Welcome to the Stockport Safeguarding Children Board multiagency programme for the next academic year. A calendar list of courses can be found on the SSCB website Where can I find child protection training? Stockport Safeguarding Children Board provides a multi-agency programme including Basic Child Protection Awareness which can be accessed through this link: There is online learning or classroom based options available. If you are employed or volunteer for smaller, voluntary, community, faith groups and charities then there are free evening sessions available. cypdevelopment@stockport.gov.uk for more information or to send in your completed application form. What training do I need to do? if you are jot sure what training you need to attend then please look at the What training do I need webpage which is there to help you. rainingdoineed1/ Do I have to pay to come to training? From April 2011, the Stockport Safeguarding Children Board meeting introduced charging for places on multi-agency training. The charging policy says that:: All organisations are charged 60 per day (pro rata) for those delegates who do not attend. This includes organisations that make a financial contribution to the board as well as those that don t. It also includes small voluntary organisations. The charge will be waived if the place is cancelled in writing by the manager 3 working days before the course date. An will be acceptable. Cancellations on the day will incur a charge. Therefore, if a delegate is unable to attend at short notice then the manager may nominate an appropriate substitute to attend. The substitute should indicate on the register who they are replacing. Organisations that do not make a financial contribution to the SSCB are charged to attend training. The cost is 60 per person per place. Small voluntary organisations are not charged for attending training but are eligible for a charge for non-attendance..

4 How to book To book onto the courses please the course administrator, using the address Please attach a fully completed application form. SMBC staff can book via i-trent; names are put onto a waiting list for the course. Please specify the course date you want to attend. Those schools who subscribe to the Learning Leads website can book places on Safeguarding courses using the usual booking method. Early Years settings and Childminders can also book through the Learning Leads website. Non-subscribers should book as above. Anyone who is employed by the NHS Foundation Trust should apply via the Vulnerable Persons Team who coordinate applications. Anyone who is employed by a GP Practice can apply directly. The closing date for applications for all courses is one month before the calendar date of the course. Please note that places are not allocated on a first-come, first-served basis but are allocated to ensure a multi-agency balance once the closing date has passed. Please pencil the date of the course in your diary when you send in your application to ensure you are not double-booked. If you are successful in obtaining a place on a course then you will receive an around 2(two) weeks before the date of the course. Please note this is generated automatically as part of the booking system that has been introduced by the council and that managers are not automatically notified of the outcome of your application. If you are unsuccessful in your application then you will be notified by . If you have not received any information then please contact the administrator on You will need to provide the title and date of the course you want to attend. Charges Agencies/ organisations who do not contribute financially to the SSCB will be charged for places on multi-agency courses. The charge is 60 per person per place (pro-rata). 5 ALLEGATIONS MANAGEMENT: BRIEFINGS FOR MANAGERS The Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) provides information on the allegations management process that must be followed when a complaint about a worker is received and the role and responsibilities for managers in the Children s Workforce. Who is the course for? This half-day workshop is suitable for both newly appointed and experienced managers: Managers who manage staff within their organisations, Managers who are responsible for child protection and safeguarding within their organisations, HR workers. 6 AN AWARENESS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INCLUDING THE IMPACT ON CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE E- LEARNING This course is available to staff on Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council payroll through the intranet. Please follow the directions to the E-Learning page on the Corporate Learning and Development site regarding how to log into Virtual College. All other staff, including students, private, voluntary and independent sector, need to apply through the SCB website. You will find an application form to download and submit to Workforce Development. Once you have done this you will receive an from the system giving log-in directions. If you apply for the e-learning course Basic Awareness Child Abuse & Neglect then you will be automatically allocated access to this course at the same time. If you have difficulty in logging in please contact Workforce Development at Who the course is for: all those who may come into contact with children, young people and/or their families during the course of their work By completing this module you should be able to: Explain what domestic violence is and who most at risk is Recognise the difference between the facts and the myths surrounding domestic violence Describe the physical and psychological effects of domestic violence Explain the impact of domestic violence on the unborn child, children and young people Classify the behaviours displayed by a perpetrator Identify positive and negative ways to support cases of domestic violence Understand the MARAC process Outline how the victim may feel Interpret domestic violence statistics Describe best practices Identify the dos and don ts of assisting in a domestic violence case Recognise when and where to get help

7 BASIC CHILD PROTECTION AWARENESS This course is for This course is open to Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council Staff, Health Staff, Police, Education Staff and the Independent, Voluntary and Private Sector, staff working in Mental Health, Substance Misuse, Learning Disability Services who require basic training in safeguarding children. Aim This course provides essential basic training in safeguarding children. This level of training is mandatory for all staff having contact with Children and families (Children Act 2004).The half-day course is an introduction to child protection and covers legal background, recognition and response and how safeguarding is integral to the common processes approach in Stockport. Please note that staff must have either completed this, an equivalent course provided by their organisation/sector/or the relevant e-learning before they can attend any SSCB multi-agency courses. 8 CAF/TAC Training CAF/TAC Basic Awareness is now available via e-learning format. Please see link to nomination form below. School based colleagues can access this e-learning via the Learning Leads website. The e-learning comprises a film (split into chapters) and an assessment. Please ensure that this e-learning forms part of all new staff induction and is utilised as refresher training by existing staff. Certificates are available on request. Once staff have successfully completed this course, they can apply for the CAF/TAC training below. Common Assessment Framework and Team Around the Child Training (live face to face sessions) This course is for anyone working with children and young people who would be expected to complete a CAF, take part in a TAC meeting or act as Lead Professional. Pre-course requirement Prior to this course applicants should have successfully completed the CAF TAC Basic Awareness E Learning course and Assessment found above. Course Content The course provides the opportunity to understand and reflect upon: the quality and importance of recording effective engagement with families making the most of TAC meetings ensuring the voice of the child is central and visible It will be supported by a number of interactive activities and a workbook. Places are limited and although there will be no charge for places there will be a charge for non-attendance. Confirmation of your place will be issued via two weeks before your chosen course. 9 DISGUISED COMPLIANCE This course is for Professionals working with children and their families on complex cases at TAC and Child Protection. 10 IMPACT OF DOMESTIC ABUSE This course is for Professionals working with families where there are concerns that they are experiencing Domestic Abuse. Workers will be undertaking multi-agency assessment, planning and support activities. This includes social workers, social care staff, health visitors, school nurses, midwives, and designated safeguarding leads, Youth Offending Team, Police, Probation, substance misuse workers, young people s workers & voluntary, private & independent providers. Aim This is a one-day workshop that provides an opportunity to look at the child protection issues of working within the context of domestic abuse. 11 SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN - CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION This course is suitable for everyone who works with young people who may be at risk of sexual exploitation. This includes social workers, social care staff, designated child protection teachers in High Schools, School Nurses, Education Welfare Officers, Youth Offending Service, Police, Probation, CAFCASS, Young people s workers, substance misuse workers, sexual health workers, midwives.. AIM This externally facilitated multi-agency training raises awareness of the issues around safeguarding children and young people from sexual exploitation. The workshop should ensure that workers in their future practice make a difference by recognising the issues, implementing local procedures, understanding the law, working together and responding appropriately. OBJECTIVES At the end of the course participants will be able to: Define the issue to include the exploitation of children through the Internet, pornography, trafficking and prostitution and be updated on sex offences legislation. Understand the level of abuse involved in sexual exploitation. Explain national and local policies and procedures including MASE Recognise vulnerability & warning signs of young people s involvement. Share local knowledge and explore best practice responses in prevention and recovery. 12 SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN: EMOTIONAL ABUSE This course is for All staff who work with children and their families, especially workers from Social Care, Schools & Education, Health, Police, Probation, YOT, Voluntary and independent childcare providers, substance misuse workers, young people s workers. A significant proportion of child protection plans in Stockport are made for emotional abuse. This one day workshop explores the topic. It also examines resilience and how it can help when planning interventions with families. Learning Outcomes At the end of the course participants will be able to: Have knowledge of the definition of emotional abuse (WT2013) Be aware of the indicators of emotional abuse Have an understanding of the impact of emotional abuse Have considered how to present the evidence of emotional abuse Have an understanding of the inter-agency issues and processes in working with emotional abuse. The Stockport Safeguarding Children Board Neglect policy expects that a Graded Care Profile will be completed. 14 SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN - FABRICATED & INDUCED ILLNESS WORKSHOP Who is the course for This is a new multi-agency event. It is suitable for Social Workers, Team Managers, Independent Reviewing Officers, Designated Child Protection Officers, Health Visitors, School Nurses, Paediatricians & Senior House Officers, Mental Health workers, YOT, CAFCASS, Police and, Probation. 15 SAFEGUARDING - FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM) AWARENESS WORKSHOP Who is the course for Professionals working with children and families from communities where Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) may be practised. This is a new course in the multi-agency programme because there is an increased emphasis on practitioners having knowledge and understanding of FGM. 16 SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN FROM FORCED MARRIAGE Who is the course for? Managers and their staff working with children and young people who may be at risk of forced marriage. It is of special interest to those who work in Children s Social Care, High Schools, the Integrated Children s Service, Health, Police, Probation CRC & NPS and the MASSH. LEARNING OUTCOMES This course is designed to increase participant s knowledge and awareness of cultural practices such as forced marriage and an opportunity for reflection on a good practice framework. Participants must have completed CAF training and understand the process in Stockport. A significant proportion of child protection plans in Stockport are made for neglect and this reflects the national picture. Learning Outcomes At the end of the course participants will be able to: This one-day workshop introduces the Graded Care profile as a tool to assess families where there is neglect. It provides an opportunity to look at neglect in more depth and to ensure better outcomes for children and families through common processes. 19 SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN: SEXUAL ABUSE This course is for All staff who work with children and their families, especially workers from Social Care, Schools & Education, Health, Police, Probation, YOS, voluntary and independent childcare providers, Substance misuse workers, young people s workers. This is a one-day workshop that looks at the topic of sexual abuse in more detail than the Basic Awareness training. It provides an overview of the investigation process for child protection cases and explains the links between civil and criminal court processes. It also explores how sexual predators operate (grooming). 20 SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN WHERE THERE IS PARENTAL SUBSTANCE MISUSE This is a two day course that explores issues around parents drug and alcohol use and the impact of this upon their parenting of children and young people. It provides an opportunity to explore support services that are available in Stockport. This course provides an in-depth follow on from the Toxic Trio Workshop. 22 SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN WITH COMMUNICATION ISSUES This course looks at the safeguarding issues for children with communication issues/ disabilities. This is a priority area for the LSCB because of their increased vulnerability. 23 SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN ONLINE This course is for This is a multi-agency course for anyone who works with children and young people or with adults who are parents or carers. It is suitable for workers from Children s Social Care, Schools, Education, YOT, Services for Young People), Health, Police, Probation, CAFCASS, and voluntary, independent and private providers. 24 SAFEGUARDING LEARNING EVENTS Through its Learning & Improvement Framework, Stockport Safeguarding Children Board has various audit activities to identify good practice and areas for improvement. These include Serious Case Reviews (SCRs), Multi-Agency Learning Reviews (MALR) and audits. Safeguarding Learning Events are short sessions where this learning from this activity, together with any messages from national research, can be shared. It is planned to hold a Safeguarding Learning Event each term. Each one will contain different information from cases that have been looked at in the preceding period. Anyone who comes to a session is expected to share the information with their colleagues in the workplace so that the SSCB can be reassured that messages are reaching frontline practitioners. The information is designed to be fed back in team meetings/ briefings. Please cypdevelopment@stockport.gov.uk to register your interest. 25 TOXIC TRIO Children Living with Adversity This course is for Workers undertaking multi-agency assessment, planning and support activities. This includes social workers, social care staff, health visitors, school nurses, midwives, and designated safeguarding leads, Substance Misuse workers, Young People s workers, mental health practitioners, YOS workers, Police, Probation and Voluntary Organisations. Aim This one-day workshop explores the learning from the national biennial Serious Case Review (SCR) reports about the key features of neglect cases especially where parental mental health/ learning disability, domestic abuse and substance misuse are present in households.
