Welcome to your Addiction Recovery Community Hub Patient information leaflet ARCH North

About Addiction Recovery Community Hub (ARCH) ARCH represents a new and exciting approach to drug and alcohol treatment services. Our aim is to support you in recovering from your drug or alcohol problem within your own community. With ARCH you will define what recovery means for you and we will support you in utilising your strengths and experiences to achieve it. For many people, achieving recovery ultimately means becoming abstinent from drug and/or alcohol use. If this is your aim, we will support you towards this goal. If this isn't your aim yet then this is also ok; we will work with you from your starting point and help you decide on what is right for you. At ARCH our aim is for you to experience our service as: Inspirational: We want to support you in developing your motivation to change; we will be there to celebrate the successes with you and to give you a helping hand with the setbacks along the way. Importantly, we also want you to meet and gain inspiration from those who have been on the same journey as you. Integrated: At ARCH we have integrated many services that were previously stand alone, eg drug intervention programme (DIP), community drug team (CDT), drug rehabilitation requirement (DRR) in order to avoid some of the pitfalls of transferring between agencies and workers. In addition we will offer you access to a range of services from partner agencies, both within the hub and at various locations in your part of the city. Page 2

About ARCH Inclusive: We will focus on all aspects of your care and wellbeing, certainly not just the medication you may require. We will also deliver an inclusive service that embraces all aspects of the diverse backgrounds of our service users. At ARCH we also aim to actively include our service users in the service's development by offering you opportunities to let us know how we are doing and how we can improver. Integrity: At ARCH integrity means a number of things. It involves us being honest with you if we believe things aren't working out as well as hoped or if we start to identify certain risks. This may involve us having a difficult conversation with you about your treatment or involving other agencies to help with the situation. Integrity also means our commitment to you to ensure we explain how confidentiality in our service works and how we look after your personal information. Page 3

What does ARCH offer? Although it is always worth checking with your worker as to what is happening locally within your ARCH service the following services are always available: Assessment: A process that helps you and us to gain a better understanding of your current situation, what you want out of treatment and the strengths you have to tackle your problems. A named recovery worker who will help you to create your own recovery plan, support you in achieving your goals and be your named contact that will coordinate the care you receive at your ARCH service. Access to the Aspire peer mentoring scheme: An opportunity to meet and gain support from those who are currently in recovery. Mutual aid: ARCH services aim to host mutual aid groups such as Narcotics Anonymous, come along and give it a try. Service user development opportunities. Physical health clinics are provided so that we have a base line assessment of your physical health. Within this clinic staff will give you information and advice on your physical health which may be affected due to your addiction problems. Services provided in clinic are blood pressure and weight checks, health advice, blood borne virus testing and vaccination, referral to allied health professionals and much more. Needle exchange. Advice on healthy lifestyle choices. One-to-one sessions using psychological therapies with a member of the ARCH team to address specific issues. Page 4

What does ARCH offer? ARCH meetings: Come along and find out more about subjects such as what treatment involves, how to avoid relapse, how to move towards recovery and preparation for detoxification. Referral to community rehabilitation: Engage with ARCH and other service providers within Birmingham to improve your housing situation, employment, training, education prospects and develop new interests and hobbies away from old friends and routines. Support for your family, partner or carer in conjunction with other service providers. Alcohol and drug detoxification in the community. Referral for inpatient detoxification and residential rehabilitation. Referral for ongoing support for alcohol users. Specific services for stimulant users. Prescribing services: Opiate replacement therapy with medications such as Subutex and methadone. Specific support for those service users who are involved in the criminal justice system for example DRR, DIP. Specific support for those service users who have children or have access to children such as assessment and referral for family support services, social services liaison. Page 5

How do I get involved and what happens next? You can either self-refer to your local ARCH service by telephone or by dropping in to see a duty worker. You can also be referred to ARCH by a professional that you are currently working with, this may be a GP, nurse, social worker, family support worker or probation officer for example. We will then arrange for you to attend for an assessment for around an hour so we can gain a better understanding of your current situation, what you want out of treatment and what strengths you have. Please bring along some form of identification to your assessment appointment if possible. Shortly after your assessment has been completed you will be allocated a recovery worker who will meet you to devise a recovery plan and start your treatment. Page 6

Useful information Confidentiality: At assessment and throughout your treatment with ARCH we will be clear with you in regard to the confidentiality boundaries that we work to. We will look to gain your written consent to hold information about you and to share this information with other services and professionals to enhance the care that you receive with your written agreement. In specific circumstances, for example when a child or vulnerable adult is at risk or in the case of serious criminal matters we will share information with other agencies without your specific consent. Bus fare: ARCH currently provide bus fare for planned appointments only, examples of which would be attendance for key working, doctor's appointments and planned group work delivered by ARCH. Contacts such as duty drop in or collecting a prescription would not be counted as a planned contact. Bus fare is reimbursed if proof of qualifying benefits have been provided to ARCH and a valid bus ticket used for the journey to the ARCH site is also produced. Interpreting service: Please contact us prior to your assessment and we will be happy to arrange any interpreting services required. Drug and alcohol use on ARCH premises: Drug and alcohol use is not permitted on or near ARCH premises, we ask you to respect other service users and not bring drugs or alcohol on or near the premises. Any incidents of drug dealing will be immediately reported to the police and treatment may be withdrawn. Page 7

Useful information Service user charter and contract: In 2009, a service user charter was developed in addiction services between staff and service users outlining the rights that our service users have when receiving a service as well as their responsibilities. Within this charter it is clear that all service users must treat their fellow service users and staff with respect and courtesy; failure to follow these basic rules could result in your service being withdrawn. In addition those who are receiving prescribed medication as part of their treatment will also be asked to sign a contract. This contract outlines the minimum requirements for receiving prescribed medication, for example the need to engage in random drug testing, ensuring your prescription is collected from the pharmacy when it is due. If you are not happy with the service you are receiving from ARCH: In the first instance we would ask you to speak to your named worker and/or doctor. If you are not happy with their response then please ask to see the manager. Alternatively, you can make a formal complaint using the trust's complaints procedure. Page 8

Useful information Independent support and advocacy services: PALS customer relations offers on-the-spot information, advice and support to service users, carers and families. It aims to: Provide information on NHS services, help sort problems out quickly, listen to concerns, queries and suggestions, signpost to other relevant services, PALS is a completely confidential service (unless anyone is at risk of harm). 10 Aspire and See Me Aspire Aspire recovery coaches is an exciting new programme supported by our trust which aims to harness and utilise the knowledge, experience and expertise of individuals in recovery from addiction in order for them to motivate and inspire services users in the early stages of their recovery journey. Aspire recovery coaches can offer advice based on real life experience of recovery in action and help guide and motivate service users toward their aspirations for a life free from addiction. The first stages of the recovery journey can often feel daunting and lonely, who better to help with these concerns than someone who has made these steps before and is now living a healthy, happy and productive life. Please ask your ARCH worker if you would like more information about accessing an Aspire recovery coach. See Me See Me are a team that offer you development opportunities, working with you to encourage involvement in your treatment and care, while providing opportunities to comment on and improve services that you receive. The team ensure you have a range of opportunities to air your views, opinions or concerns on services. This information is communicated to people who can make changes to the services you use. You can expect to be regularly informed of any progress made in relation to actions taken based on your feedback. See Me team members are willing to discuss involvement options they offer or answer any questions or quires you may have on ARCH hub services. So please contact the team on To talk to a team member and receive advice on how you can become involved. Page 10
