ATNETYEKE STAND UP! Anrows Action Research Project Presentation December 2016 Presenter: Eliza Arbaci Tangentyere Family Violence Prevention Program

STAND UP ATNETYEKE its time to make a change!

Calling communities to action STAND UP/ ATNETYEKE is a short animated film about Family Violence. It is a call to action for all members of the community to STAND UP. To come together to take action against Family Violence in their communities. This film is part of a national strategy to reduce violence against women and children and to build safer communities. This film has been made by the Tangentyere Family Violence Prevention Program under the advisement of the Tangentyere Womens Family Safety Group. It was recognised by the Tangentyere Family Violence Prevention Program that there were no resources for trainers/ facilitators that depicted Family Violence set in the context of Central Australia for primary prevention. Training the women of Alice Springs who live in Town Camps to respond to family violence their voices emerged over time that they would like the men to take responsibility for their use of violence. They also spoke about wanting safe communities for their children to grow up in. A governance group was formed from the original participants of the Womens Safety Group and they participated in a writers workshop to assist the writers and producers to understand what challenges they face and what changes they would like to see. We want the men to take responsibility. We want them to understand what is happening to our children and the impacts of family violence. We want our children to grow up safe and strong We want our families and communities to help us be strong and stand against family violence. STAND UP highlights the cycles of family violence, the patterns power and control, the impacts on women & children, the rights of women, the entitlement of men, and what family and community can do to make a change. This film is to be part of an online training package to deliver to agencies, staff, men participating in the Men s Behaviour Change program and also women being trained by the Womens Family Safety Group to respond to violence in Town Camps.

Making the film Finding Elders and people who speak Arrente often took me to outside spaces. Pictured: Edward Neal (Traditional Owner) Narelle Palmer (Mum) Jane Young (Interpreter) Tyrese Palmer (young boy)

What we heard

What we heard Feedback from the film has been really positive and has started conversations: Edward Neal T/O stated, I feel very proud to work on this, family violence is a problem with our community. Prison inmate: There are no more elders to speak to. Prison inmate: I was that guy that hurt my family. I used to get drunk spend all the money and go home, jealous and abuse my wife. puts hand on chest with head down and states, it makes me so sad. Prison inmate, I feel shamed that I did this to my family. Prison inmate: I like that there was a positive end- that we can change. Womens Safety Group: That s a good one, eh? We want to know there is hope. We couldn t see hope before, It offers a little hope- just a little. Yuendemu mums: Do you think he killed her? Observation: Little boys reaction: when the fight scene was on he went from running around to being very still.

What we learnt There has been so much wonderful learning on this project! We learnt that even though everyone speaks different language that they wanted it in English because when its in another language people watching it cannot understand and they can t read English! Aboriginal people really respond to visual aids and story. It opens up a platform for discussion. Making it safe and externalises. Sometimes there are no words in Aboriginal language to depict what we want to say. Like the concepts of inequality or power and control. Men who watched the film and who use violence respond with empathy when they understand the impacts upon their children.
