1 Suomi Koti Toronto Nursing Home letter November 2016 Spa days in November will be on Wednesdays November 2 and 16. On Thursdays November 3 and 17, volunteer Maija Suomela will be playing the piano in the activity lounge for our listening pleasure beginning at 11am. On Saturday November 5, there will be an Estonian at 4pm in B1. On Sunday November 6 th, we will have our annual Memorial, remembering those residents who have passed away since last year s memorial. This year we are remembering: Risto Puhakka Feb. 2,1929- Dec.26, 2015 Oliver Harju July 17,1929-Feb Lauri Roth Jan April 12,2016 Urpo Leskinen Jan 22, May 5,2016 Martti Vakkuri April 16,1930-May 30,2016 Laila Linden December 04, July 1, 2016 Eila Jämsänen June 03, August 27, 2016 Anja Rautiainen May 5, September 3, 2016 Lore Joulu July 2, Oct. 6, 2016 Karin Puisto March 31, 1928 Oct. 24, 2016 Unto Makinen will be entertaining us with his singing and accordion playing on Wednesday November 9 at 3pm. Welcome to sing along, tap your toes, dance. On Thursday November 10, there will be a Residents Council meeting at 10:30am in the activity lounge. All residents encouraged to come and give feedback/suggestions regarding programs and services.
2 The next Family Council meeting will be held on Monday November 14 at 1:00pm in the B1 level meeting room. Anyone family members who might be willing to get involved with the council are encouraged to attend! On Saturday November 19 th, the Laestadian church will be holding a worship service followed by some intergenerational activities. Welcome. Also on Saturday November 19, join Unto and Taina Makinen for some traditional Finnish music beginning at 3pm. Sing along, tap your toes everyone welcome! On Sunday November 20, there will be an Estonian church service in the B1 meeting room at 3pm. Also on Sunday November 20, join the Agricola Lutheran church for a worship service at 6pm in the B2 auditorium. On Monday November 21, welcome to enjoy some oldies music with Karsten beginning at 3pm; Dance, tap your toes, clap your hands. The Karelian Club continues its monthly meetings on Monday November 21 at 3:45pm in the B1 meeting room. On Wednesday November 23, there will be a baking program at 2:30pm. Welcome. Thursday November 24 th is the date of the monthly birthday party celebrating the birthdays of Suomi-Koti apartment tenants and nursing home residents born in November. It will be held in the B2 auditorium at 2:30pm. Best wishes to Sirkka Savikko (Nov 3), Anja Hamalainen (Nov 11), Maria Virtanen (Nov 14), and to Rauha Kariluoma (Nov 23). On Saturday November 26 at 10 am, we look forward to mom and tot Katri and Markus visiting. Sunday November 27 th is the first advent and there will be bus to take interested residents to Agricola church for the advent service. Bus leaves Suomi-Koti at 9am. Volunteers are needed; please contact Arja Tolppanen if you are available to assist.
3 Also on Sunday November 27, welcome to the B2 auditorium for Saalem Church s Evening of Good Tidings at 6pm; will include Christmas hymns followed by refreshments. Residents needing assistance to attend are asked to let Arja know in advance so that she can make arrangements. Tuesday November 29 is the date of the Volunteer Christmas Dinner. Invitations will be sent out. If you (or someone you know) should have been invited but do not receive an invitation, please accept our apologies and contact Arja Tolppanen ( ext 232 or tolppanen@suomikoti.ca) to make sure we have your correct contact information and to RSVP. Join us on the afternoon of Wednesday November 30 to do some Christmas crafts and to decorate the Christmas tree! ******************** The family council would like to thank those who participated in, or donated to the 20th Walkathon Ralph Weverman Memorial Fundraising Walkathon. Participants ranged from age 22 month old Markus Kaarlonen to 94 yr old Matti Ruuska and the event raised $5651! They continue to accept donations if the Therapy Programme, which the walkathon has been funding, is to continue a full year till the next Walkathon. A special thank you to Urpo Wallin for doing the setup, and to Katri Kaarlonen for her translation work. We need new family members or caregivers of the residents to seriously consider attending the Family Council meetings.
