1 BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF KING COUNTY 2015 Annual Report
2 Our Mission and History Since 1943, Boys & Girls Clubs of King Country has provided kids with the following: Safe place to learn and grow Ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals Life-enhancing programs and character development experiences Hope and opportunity We currently serve more than 17,000 youth in the King County and Bainbridge Island Clubs (12 Clubs, 2 teen centers and 26 early learning and child care sites). Our Mission To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Local History In January 1943, a riot involving more than 100 teens broke out on the corner of 85th and Greenwood in Seattle. Police who responded to the incident began looking for an answer to the growing community problem of juvenile crime and vandalism. As a result, Deputy Joe Woelfert opened the first Boys & Girls Club (originally called the Boys Club) in Washington state the North Seattle Club. It was a great success from the very start, and within two years, eight Clubs sprouted up in the area. In the 1980s, the King County Clubs led the national movement to add girls to our name, which came to pass in Today, there are 14 Clubs including 2 teen centers around King County, each focused on enriching the lives of kids every day.
3 Boys & Girls Clubs of King County Annual Report FY15 A Message from our President/CEO Dear Friends, Every day, I am mindful that Boys & Girls Clubs is helping kids and teens on the path to Great Futures. I continue to be inspired by our caring youth development staff and all they do for our Club members. We re also blessed to have supportive and involved board members, donors, and community partners. Through their efforts and relationships, we are developing confident and compassionate youth. It s my pleasure to share with you some of our highlights over the past fiscal year: In 2015, BGCKC served 17,748 members, up from 17,200 in BGCKC has a focus on education and a passion to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). In 2015, BGCKC instituted a STEM Task Force to strengthen and increase opportunities for learning through a comprehensive STEM strategy that will ensure that every BGCKC site will be equipped to offer world-class learning opportunities in an impactful, sustainable and efficient manner. Along with total membership, BGCKC s average daily attendance has also increased to 2,307 youth in 2015, up from 1,980 in This increase indicates that our members are visiting sites often, and are being engaged and impacted by our programs. A huge cause for celebration! The number of youth volunteers increased from 277 in 2014 to 837 in 2015! The total number of adult volunteers serving BGCKC reached 2,380, an increase from 2,120 in KidsAuction raised $780,000 and LunchBreak! raised $520,000. We are extremely appreciative of our partnership with Microsoft at the $100,000 sponsorship level which helped extend and enrich targeted education initiatives. A generous grant from KeyBank expanded YouthForce (career exploration and job training) in both the Seattle and Portland-area communities ($500,000 over 3 years). The Brettler Family Foundation provided $100,000 over 3 years for Summer Brain Gain and Power Hour. We received $30,000 from the Raikes Foundation over 2 years for county-wide Youth Quality Program Initiative. I am grateful for what has been accomplished in I look forward to a bright future; reaching additional families and helping more Club members realize their potential. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, Calvin L. Lyons President/CEO Boys & Girls Clubs of King County Our Mission Boys & Girls Clubs of King County exists to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. 8 Our Focus Every day, our professional youth development staff members are changing lives, giving kids a place to call their own a safe, fun, inclusive and inspiring atmosphere that families can count on. Dedicated to promoting healthy choices and inspiring youth to make decisions that put their dreams within reach, our nationally recognized programs support three core impact areas: Academic Success Our goal is to prepare our members to graduate from high school and be ready and qualified to attend college or trade school and gain employment. Healthy Lifestyles We prepare our kids and teens to adopt a healthy diet, practice healthy choices (such as abstaining from harmful substances) and commit to lifelong fitness. Good Character & Citizenship Our programs model strong character and teach youth to be engaged citizens by getting involved in the community. Who We Serve and Where We Serve Them 12 Clubs Ballard, Bainbridge Island, Federal Way, Kirkland, Mercer Island, North Seattle, Smilow Rainier Vista (Rainier Valley), Redmond/Sammamish, Renton/Skyway (Renway), Rotary (Central District), Southwest (White Center) and Wallingford 2 Teen Centers Ron Sandwith Teen Center in Federal Way and the Sammamish Teen Center 26 Early Learning and Child Care sites throughout King County Volunteer Your Time Be a part of the Boys & Girls Club movement! Visit or contact a Club near you about upcoming volunteer opportunities. Get Involved Our goal is to put a membership card in the hand of every child or teen who wants to belong. We strive never to turn a child away. More than 4,000 children each year receive a scholarship to waive all or part of their Club membership or child care cost. With your support, our programs and services remain affordable to every community. Families pay less than $50 per year pennies a day for a basic membership to our Clubs. But in reality, it costs us now more than ever, your gift can make an impact. Please consider making a contribution online at
9 Will we continue to impact children in three vital ways: Academic success Improving grades, reducing high school drop-out rates and teaching kids to see themselves as learners. Good character and citizenship Encouraging community service, reducing juvenile crime rates and instilling an attitude of engagement. Healthy lifestyles Teaching healthy behaviors, reducing drug use and childhood obesity and fostering positive self-images.
