2 A Special Thank You On May 29th, Cornerstone of Hope celebrated our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. This is a time where our staff has the opportunity to serve those who selflessly gave their time and talents in 2013 to make this a special place. The Volunteer Appreciation Dinner is one of our favorite events because not only do we show our thanks for all that the volunteers do, but we have the opportunity to visit and look back at the many events and projects from the previous year. We would also like to recognize one very special volunteer who recently was awarded the Cuyahoga Valley Chamber of Commerce s 5th Annual Impact Award for Person of the Year. Missy Hayes has been an answer to our prayers, and she has chaired our gala for the past 11 years. When our Board of Directors suggested in 2003 that we needed a signature fundraising event that would create awareness, raise necessary operating dollars and add credibility to our mission, Christi and I were overwhelmed. We met Missy, and she instantly volunteered to help with this event. With her leadership, our annual gala evolved from raising $135,000 with 450 guests in our inaugural year to netting $400,000 with 750 attendees at our Decade of Hope gala celebration. The total over the years has been more than $2.5 million dollars raised to benefit our grief support programs. Missy has accomplished all of this while raising two daughters with her husband, Scott, working full-time and serving the same role at Trinity High School for their annual fundraiser. Missy, like so many of our amazing volunteers, make Cornerstone a place TABLE OF CONTENTS of comfort for those who are grieving a loss. We want to express our Page 3 Gala heartfelt gratitude for their generosity Page 4 Education and Training over the years. 3 Bringing the Bereavement Community Together The 2014 Central Ohio Conference on Grief On May 1st and 2nd, Cornerstone of Hope partnered with several Columbus organizations to host the Central Ohio Conference on Grief. Featured speaker was Dr. Thomas Joiner, Professor of Psychology at Florida State University, and a leading researcher in the field of suicide. The conference theme Healing through Hope, brought together both the bereaved and the professionals who serve them. Thursday evening, Dr. Joiner spoke to people in the community who have lost a loved one traumatically, offering support and hope through education on why people die by suicide. Friday morning, Dr. Joiner was back giving a keynote presentation to 175 professionals from all over Ohio and surrounding states. Dr. Joiner shared the results of his extensive research in the field of suicidology. He was both inspiring and educational and challenged the validity of decades old thinking about suicide. After the keynote, participants were able to choose from 12 workshops to further their knowledge in various areas of grief and bereavement. Several of Cornerstone of Hope s staff presented on their experience in this field at the conference. Some of the workshop offerings included Creative Memorialization, the Spiritual Journey after a Loss and the Impact of Cancer on Grief. Participating professionals were able to take back new interventions and ideas to their workplace along with meeting and networking with others in this important field. This conference was made possible through the following conference committee members: Schoedinger Funeral and Cremation Service, Cornerstone of Hope, Hospice of Central Ohio, Berger Health System and Wexner Heritage Village. The 2015 Central Ohio Conference on Grief Committee is excited to announce that next year s conference will be held May 7-8, The conference will focus on Complicated Grief, and our keynote speaker will be Dr. Katherine Shear, a Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University and Director of the Center for Complicated Grief. Be on the lookout on our website for conference updates! Eagle Scout adds to the Treehouse Kyle Sowers, a St. Basil s Eagle Scout, wanted to help Cornerstone ever since he learned about our mission through the family rosary prayer group. So, when he heard that Cornerstone of Hope was in need of some stairs to lead down to the ravine by the treehouse, he knew this would be the perfect project for him. He raised $2,575 from local businesses, friends and neighbors to cover the cost, and Kyle along with local Eagle and Boy Scouts from St. Basil s planned and completed the project in five days! This new addition to the treehouse will give clients a way to access the serene back wooded area for walks and contemplation. Thank you for your wonderful work! 6 cornerstone of hope a center for grieving children, teens & adults

7 Cleveland Updates Fund Development News Vitas Hospice Enterprise Cornhole for a Cause Jenny Strohm and Roberta Biaoni, on behalf of Vitas Hospice, presented Cornerstone of Hope with a check for $2,000 to be used toward our summer Camp programs this year. Their dedication to serving those in our community and supporting grieving children and teens is a blessing. To learn more about how you can support Cornerstone s summer camps, please contact us at Chris Filomena from Enterprise presented Cornerstone of Hope with $2,500 for the third year in a row. Their generosity and support of our programs has greatly impacted the lives of grieving teens, children and adults who walk through our doors every day. Thank you again for making this special gift and being part of the Cornerstone of Hope family. The Kent State University Zeta Zeta Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega held their second annual Cornhole for a Cause event to benefit Cornerstone of Hope. They had 73 teams participate in the tournament that raised more than $4,600! The brothers chose Cornerstone because grief will touch everyone s life at some point, and they saw this as a opportunity to create awareness and positively impact their community. Their generous donations from the past two years totaled more than $9,700 and will ensure that individuals and families are able to receive grief support regardless of their ability to pay. Annual Report Please visit cornerstoneofhope.org to view our 2013 Annual Report. This report includes personal stories from clients and supporters along with a listing of gifts received in 2013 and a special section to honor gifts made in memory or in honor of loved ones.
