1 Peer2Peer Newsletter March 2013 When someone has spent an awful long time being misunderstood in the mental health system, peer support is like a breath of fresh air and can be lifesaving. I have found, during frequent stays in hospital, that the contents of my file seemed to be more important than my presenting state of mental health. 90% of the time I just want to talk to someone who can truly understand and can offer solutions they used themselves to overcome similar experiences it is liberating. I am not a diagnosis, I am a human being and as such I am more important than my diagnosis. Peer Support sees the person first, understands their distress and can offer true solutions that the Supporting Peer has used themselves. Peer Support Worker, Peer2Peer Network member Welcome and Introductions Dear Peer2Peer Network member, Welcome to this quarterly edition of the Peer2Peer Newsletter (formerly known as Brief )! The aim of the newsletter is to facilitate a dialogue around good practice in peer support as well as connect people through information sharing and learning. To facilitate this, we share information, thoughts and news exchanged at the Peer2Peer Steering Group meetings as well as communications amongst Peer2Peer Network members. We welcome any news, developments and thoughts that you would like to share regarding peer support in your area. This year we are fortunate to have Daniel Eichner on board. Daniel will be editing and circulating this newsletter so please feel free to contact Daniel regarding news and developments as well as any thoughts on the newsletter itself: daniel-eichner@together-uk.org or Very best wishes Elina Deputy Director, Peer Support Together for Mental Wellbeing 1 Peer2Peer Newsletter - March 2013

2 The P2P Steering Group & Network Together is a national charity working alongside people with mental health issues so that they can lead fulfilling, independent lives. We believe that one of the most powerful ways to help people experiencing mental distress is through Peer Support. We are very passionate about and trusted for our expertise on user leadership and peer support. For the last three years we have been supporting the development and hosting of the user led Peer2Peer Group: a group of user led organisations with peer support expertise that come together from around the country to exchange and develop good practice, share developments and information as well as peer support each other. Last year, the Peer2Peer Group became a Steering Group for a wider network of individuals and organisations that wanted to link up with us around peer support. The Peer2Peer Network was launched in September 2012 and aims to facilitate development and delivery of innovative peer support practice led by lived experience, as well as exchanging good practice, joint learning, understanding and partnership working amongst service user groups, voluntary organisations, other statutory service providers and commissioners. Membership of the P2P network includes user led organisations, NHS Trusts & PCTs, service providers, charities, community organisation and academia. If you re interested in finding out more about the Peer2Peer network and how to join, please contact Elina Stamou at elina-stamou@together-uk.org or Developments & News Updates and news from organisations active within the Peer2Peer Group and Network 4Sight A user led group based in East London, has been running a programme called Peers 2 Meet You whereby they go to acute wards and support people who are soon to be discharged. 4-Sight also runs monthly Sunday lunches for service users and peer supporters. Making Waves Making Waves is a user led group that works with primary and secondary care with local universities and the voluntary sector. They focus on service evaluation, research, training, involvement, and challenging prejudices and discrimination. Making Waves is also carrying out a project to support people who want to come off psychiatric drugs. Mind Mind s new strategic plan identifies the aim that everyone with mental health problems in England and Wales will have access to, or know about, peer support, by March In order for Mind to reach this objective, a four year new work programme has been established with the first year concentrating on researching models, mapping, scoping and planning. 3 Peer2Peer Newsletter - March 2013

4 The Mind Peer Support Enquiry Team has been set up to lead the first years work and support Mind s peer support programme. National Survivor User Network (NSUN) NSUN is a service user-led charity that connects people with lived experience to give them a greater voice in shaping policy and services. NSUN s Peer Support for service User Involvement Workers working group is still going strong. NSUN wants to do more work on peer support and personalisation in the future. NSUN is also leading on the National Involvement Partnership, which is working to establish national involvement standards. NSUN is currently working with Mind to run events around the country in order to hear people s views and experiences on peer support. The network is also running a project (Hackney, Lambeth, Norfolk and Newcastle) that facilitates the development of local networks to support people with lived experience being able to influence local mental health policy and practice. Project SWAP (Supporting Well-being and Personalisation) Project SWAP is a user led Community Interest Company that was was set up in March 2012 as a result of a successful programme to develop and deliver peer brokerage training for 12 Peer Brokers in East Kent that year. Following this success, the four trainers set up Project SWAP CIC to: Train further Peer Brokers to work with service users to enable them to access Personal Budgets Train Peer Support and Recovery workers Use the Arts as a means of aiding recovery for people with lived experience of mental distress Act as enablers to other service user led groups through providing training and support Provide advice and consultancy to the statutory, voluntary and private sector to encourage greater involvement of service users in mental health services Reading Your Way Reading Your Way at Together for Mental wellbeing currently employ active paid peer support workers that deliver floating peer support in the service. 5 Roads to Recovery A user led group supports young people (18 35 years old) in their recovery though peer support training, peer support in the community, peer arts/music/film groups, courses and projects. They also provide peer support on the wards of the local mental health hospital. The group is based in Nottingham. Rochdale Borough wide User Forum (RBUF) The RBUF in Greater Manchester provides a voice for mental health service users in its area, organising monthly meetings to this effect, and also provides a space for service users to form their own groups. Southwark Mind Southward Mind is user-led and is based in London. They run a social club, a hearing voice group, a women s forum (healthy eating and complimentary therapy) and the user council that works to influence mental health policy and practice. Synergy Creative Community Synergy Creative Community in West Sussex is a user led group that bridges the gap between mental health professionals and people accessing services by engaging them as equal participants in creative workshops and training. Synergy also run a range of arts groups for people experiencing mental distress. Together Staying true to its philosophy around user leadership, the Together has started a brave journey of meaningful transformation of services in order to provide person centred and directed, recovery focused and in some services, users led provision. This transformation also includes strengthening peer support in services across Together, including residential and advocacy as well as our self-directed Your Way community based service model where user leadership and peer support are at the centre of service provision. Together, also provides advice and accredited training on peer support while it also leads on relevant research. Together currently leads on the national Peer led Collaboration that aims to recognise and establish peer led peer support as a leading force in mental health. The Collaboration includes the Mental Health Foundation, National Survivor Users Network (NSUN), Afiya Trust, Mental Health Providers Forum, St George s University and Mind. Collectively the Peer led Collaboration represents a diverse range of experience and communities, currently reaching out to over 265,000 people with lived experience and user led organisations. 5 Peer2Peer Newsletter - March 2013

6 Guest Contribution This issue s guest contribution comes from Nick smith, support worker for the MAN-Age Men s Group of the Leeds Survivor Led Crisis Service, which he has kindly described for us. *** MAN-Age men s group was borne out of a number of male users of Dial House, home of the Leeds Survivor Led Crisis Service, wanting a safe and therapeutic space in which to discuss what is going on for them, how mental health issues are affecting their daily lives and dealing with times of crisis but from a male perspective. Traditionally men have been much less likely to talk about their mental health with anyone else so to have a safe place for this to happen has proved invaluable. The group has also helped men in dealing with their periods of crisis by showing them that they are not alone and by listening to other men talk about their mental health and how they cope with it. Being a man is usually associated with being the provider, sorting out problems as they arise and getting on with life in the face of difficulties. Dealing with mental health issues can put a stop to all of this as it completely takes over one s life and becomes the lens through which one s reality is viewed. The aim of the MAN-Age group is to acknowledge these experiences and give them validation whilst the person comes to terms with them. The MAN-Age group is peer-led which has meant that the group runs itself and the lived experience of its members is at its core. The shared understanding of the group members in being men with experience of having to cope with crisis and mental health issues is essential to how they support each other in dealing with a long-term mental health condition. For the MAN-Age group the best analogy is that it tries to reflect a number of men sat around a table in a pub having a few drinks and putting the world to rights. However, at MAN-Age we substitute Dial House for the pub and tea and coffee for pints. The rest remains the same! For more information about MAN-Age and the other groups and services that Leeds Survivor Led Crisis Service provides please visit or call us on *** If you have something you want to say to the other members, an insight you d like to share or a topic you think needs discussing, please contact us! We welcome other guest contributions, and would love to hear from you. Please contact Daniel at daniel-eichner@together-uk.org or Peer2Peer Newsletter - March 2013
