This course is the first of two courses that will prepare students for generalist social work practice. The course focused on the examination of problem-solving interventions and environmental modification skills for use with individuals and families at a beginning level of proficiency. Social Work 402 Generalist Practice Groups Sole instruction in class of 30 students, designed to prepare undergraduate students for mezzo and macro practice. Each student was randomly assigned to groups of three and four students. Groups were assigned to complete their mock agency development project. Within their assignment portfolio are documents such as a mission statement, agency description, list of potential liaisons, agency advertising campaign, brochure, organizational and staffing patterns, agency budget (including grant and 401C-3 applications) and evaluation instrument. Most students were in their last semester prior to entering their practicum. Health Education 101 Introduction to Health Sole instructor for introductory class of 25 to 30 students, required by all incoming freshman to SIUC. The class reviews important information regarding nutrition, sexual/reproductive health, substance abuse, violence/injury prevention, environmental health, personal fitness, infectious/noninfectious disease, spiritual health, and other supportive topics focused on personal and group health. Social Work 383 Interviewing and Interpersonal Skills Sole instructor for classes ranging from 30 to 37 students, designed to prepare undergraduate social work students for working face to face with clients. Students are required to conduct mock interviews utilizing theory-based skills, research topics to improve culturally competent knowledge base, and complete a class project including an assessment, treatment plan, progress note, discharge summary, and power point presentation. Social Work 400A Human Behavior in the Social Environment Sole instructor in classes ranging from 28 to 35 students, designed to prepare undergraduate students for work with clients through in-depth study of theory- 2

3 based paradigms related to individual human development (conception through death). Each student is required to complete a 5-6 page research paper focused on a developmental phase and an associated health/developmental/social conditions that impact human development. Southern Illinois Behavioral Services 7/1999 5/2003 Carbondale, IL Outpatient Therapist, Individual, family assessment, treatment planning, and therapeutic services for adults, adolescents, and children in a mental health setting. Participated in a team of clinicians including three psychiatrists and two psychiatric nurses. Participated in clinical services with a focus on psycho-social issues and life skills training within the partial-hospitalization program. Provided emergency services and linkage in-house, Perry County Jail, and Perry County hospitals. Assisted Area Coordinator Evansville, IN to organize a support group for burn survivors in his area. Consultant to American Red Cross, National Headquarters, for professionals working with survivors of Evansville, IN plane crash, spring Organized and facilitated a peer support group for burn survivors in Southern Illinois on the campus of SIUC. As victims of severe burns are typically airlifted to St. Louis, the group worked in cooperation with St. John s Mercy Hospital Burn Unit and Burns Recovered, Inc., both of St. Louis, MO. Accomplished by coordinating assistance from area firefighters, burn care professionals and burn survivors. Organized and facilitated a referral agreement between the burn survivor support group and Strong s burn unit to provide individualized peer support to patients on the unit. Accomplished by screening potential volunteers, coordinating hospital and burn unit orientation programs for volunteers and matching appropriate volunteers to referred patients on the unit.
