4 Importance of WEAAD Innovator of WEAAD, Elizabeth Podnieks, Ph.D. Professor Emerita at Ryerson University. 1. WEAAD involves activities that generate greater international recognition to the issue of elder abuse throughout the world, and highlights the need for appropriate action and response. 2. It is intended to give abuse and neglect of older adults a global relevance that will sustain and move prevention efforts forward throughout the whole year and years to come. 3. It is an opportunity to join together and recognize the many local and regional efforts to address the problem. 4. Creates a platform to speak and communicate with one united voice on this issue.
