To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. Optimist International President s Message While I have been excited about starting my year as our Noon Optimist President, I must admit I was somewhat nervous. However, I feel so much better after spending a little time talking with our members about continuing to help with activities or accepting new responsibilities. As usual, our ladies were so willing to step up and do their part to help our Club. I also owe a great debt of gratitude to Lauri Spain, who has been patiently coaching me in how to perform my new duties. One of my goals is to continue to move the Club forward as she has done. She is a good role model for Optimist leadership. I also want to give a special thanks to Patty Turner and Debbie Hoffmann for giving me special assistance and for the many hours they give to our Optimist Club. Of course, our big project for September was a fundraiser at the SEMO District Fair. Thank you, Emily Collins, for chairing and coordinating all the work shifts as we manned Gate 3. Our volunteers covered 208 shifts, served 515 hours, and earned $3,941 for our Club. It was a lot of work, but I must say that it was also enjoyable sharing time with fellow Optimist members and visiting with many of the folks coming into the Fair. The Installation Banquet was beautifully decorated and truly memorable a fitting tribute for the 25 th anniversary of the founding of the Jackson Noon Optimist Club. The pictures tell the story. Thanks for a job well done to Banquet Committee Chair Nancy Collier and Committee members Susan Hahs, Clarinda Unger, Kathy Lowes, Debbie Hoffmann, Rhonda Sievers, Lauri Spain, Wanda Young, and Patty Turner. 4 We had 61 workers for the fair. Out of that number 13 were not members of our club. They were either spouses or friends!!! We worked approximately 500 hours for a total of about $ not sure of exact dollar amount. I guess I should give the title of MY FAIR LADY to Janet Poston. She worked 16 different shifts that week for over 50 + hours!!!! I want to thank everyone for making this year s fair gate project a huge success. Thanks to Clarinda for helping call to schedule workers and to Mary Kirn for calling to remind everyone of their shift. We have a great organization and we do terrific work. Thanks again to all who helped in any way. Looking forward to next year s fair!!! Emily Collins As my term has come to an end, I would like to thank everyone for their help in making this another successful year. Everyone worked hard at bingo, the fair gate, the Hope for Kids Fun Run, bringing in new members and serving on committees. This enabled us to continue to provide funds and activities to youth in our community. I would also like to thank the Board. Their guidance to our club is immeasurable. I would like to thank the entire club for their confidence in me. It has been an honor to serve as your President and I value the friendships that I have gained this year. 5 The Installation Banquet along with the 25th Anniversary Celebration was held on Monday, September 26 at the Bent Creek Clubhouse. Dinner was catered by Tractor s. Larry Ream who was President of The Optimist Club of Jackson when our club was formed gave a short talk about the chartering of our club. Don Sievers who was the New Club Building Chair presented a champagne toast in honor of the club s 25th anniversary. Each guest was given a commemorative champagne glass as a gift. Cameron Tyler, the Optimist International World Oratorical Champion presented his winning speech, told us about his overall oratorical contests experiences, and also sang a song for us. He is a very talented young man. President Lauri presented the Year In Review. Patty Turner presented the perfect attendance awards. East Missouri District Governor for , Lister Florence, installed the new officers and board members for A special gift as well as a life membership was presented to outgoing President Lauri. Incoming President, Barbara Lohr, gave the closing remarks. Adjourned with The Optimist Creed. 8 September 7 Business Meeting (See Board Briefs) September 14 No Meeting Fair Gate Fundraiser September 21 Fellowship Debra Hoffmann presented PGI awards to Wanda Young and Lesa Weiss. Members assembled Santa Key cards for the Santa Train project. September 30 No Meeting Installation Banquet was held on Monday, September 26. The Board of Directors met on Tuesday, September 6 at the home of Patty Turner. This was a joint board meeting of the members and the new members. Patty provided the meat and drinks for the meal and other members brought a side dish or dessert. Action taken was mainly to make additional donations to organizations with money left in the budgeted donations category for (See table below) Filling slots for the Fair Gates fundraiser project was also discussed.
