Myra Adams first learned about Hanover Habitat for Humanity when she was driving through Ashland with her son, Cody, and came across a sign for Bailey Woods, Hanover Habitat s first neighborhood.

2 Myra Adams first learned about Hanover Habitat for Humanity when she was driving through Ashland with her son, Cody, and came across a sign for Bailey Woods, Hanover Habitat s first neighborhood. Myra thinks that she was meant to drive past Bailey Woods that day because she learned about Habitat in a time of great need. She has overcome a lot in recent years, including learning to live with a severe illness and disability. Myra and her son have been living in rental housing with extremely high rent for years. In addition to their home being unaffordable, it does not meet Myra s accessibility needs. As an active member of Atlee Community Church and the coordinator for the Atlee Outreach Ministry, Myra devotes time, as her health will allow, providing food, clothing and much more to the homeless and underprivileged in Hanover County. Cody also supports the Atlee Outreach Ministry, primarily devoting his free time to serving hot meals to the homeless. Myra feels that God has called her to give back to the community however and whenever possible. In addition to her dedication to Hanover County s faith community, she is also her children s strongest supporter. She is currently putting her younger son through college. He is a successful, fulltime college student at Old Dominion University. By partnering with Hanover Habitat, Myra and her son will finally have an affordable and accessible place to call home. When asked what owning a home would mean to her, it took Myra a moment to answer. She finally said, Everything. She went on to say that it will mean having roots, stability, and pride. Myra and her son can t wait to move into their forever home this winter. Hanover Habitat for Humanity offers a hand up not a hand out to our homeowners who are hardworking families who through no fault of their own struggle to make ends meet. It is a proven fact that homeownership has a significant impact on net worth, educational achievement, civic participation, health, and an overall quality of life. Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities.

3 WAYS TO GET INVOLVED! 1. VOLUNTEER AT THE BUILD SITE Faith Build will take place approximately from mid-august to mid-december, and we will need volunteers every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. - All skill levels welcome; no experience necessary! - Must be 16 years old with parental approval, or 18 years and older. - Groups up to 12 people per day. Individuals are welcome too! 2. PROVIDE LUNCH & SNACKS For each build day, we will be looking for people to provide lunches and snacks for our volunteers. We recommend to estimate preparing lunch for 12 people, though we can provide you a better count a week prior. Lunch can be purchased from a local restaurant, or homemade! 3. GIVE We have challenged the Faith community to rally and help us raise $100,000, the average construction cost to build a home. We recognize that every congregation is a different size and has different resources. Host one of the suggested fundraisers, listed on the following page, to help reach your fundraising goal! 4. CELEBRATE At the end of every home we build, we celebrate by inviting the community to participate in a dedication ceremony where we thank all those involved and present the keys to our new homeowner! We welcome you to send a few representatives from your congregation to the ceremony, as space will be limited. We hope to host a reception will follow the ceremony more details to come!

4 FUNDRAISING IDEAS One of the first lessons Habitat volunteers learn is that God will provide. Below are some ideas that can help you raise money and awareness. Remember that the number one rule for getting people to give, is to ask. SERVE UP YOUR CONGREGATION S FAVORITE DINNER, DESSERTS OR ICE CREAM Plan a social and spice it up with a speaker or a dance or performers. DISTRIBUTE HABITAT HOUSE BANKS AND FUNDRAISING CALENDARS Children learn to count their blessings and join in the giving as they collect money based on the conveniences in their homes. Ask a Habitat staff member on how to receive these materials. BUY A BRICK Create a grid on poster containing a drawing of a house. Sell sections of the grid and write donors names in the spaces. ORGANIZE A 2X4 SUNDAY Invite your congregations to sign the 2x4s, for a small donation, to write encouraging messages, quotes or drawings. This is a great way for children to get involved as well! These 2x4s will be used to frame the walls of a Habitat home! PLAN A SPECIAL OFFERING OR OFFERINGS Designate a specific Sunday, a holiday, a month or fifth Sunday as a time for special Hanover Habitat offerings. Be sure to publicize this early!
