1 Spring 2017 Torn Pieces by Rex Allen Grief support services manager For hundreds of years, humans have used the creative arts to better understand the instinctual response to loss we call grief. The materials used were often those most readily available a drum, the human voice, a splash of color on the wall of a cave. Today the creative arts can still help us make meaning as we face our loss. We might not even need to leave home to find the materials we need. Many years ago I attended a day-long workshop focused on using collage as a way to better understand how grief was at work in my life. The previous year had been difficult for me. I had experienced the deaths of multiple friends and family members. I hoped I would find in this workshop some relief from the internal ache I experienced daily. Truth be told, I viewed collage as a craft project to keep children busy when adults had other things to do. Our instructor for the day provided a simple history of collage as an art technique. She then called our attention to the tools at hand at hand stacks of magazines, scissors, Elmer s Glue and a blank piece of poster board positioned in front of each of us. We were simply to surrender to the images and words within the magazines, tear out those that reminded us of our grief, and then glue them in layers on the poster board. Don t worry about making art, she instructed, just express what you feel within you. Within minutes, the room was filled with the sound of paper being torn. In This Issue page 2 Camp Erin page 3 Kids and Teens Corner page 3 Standing Together grief support for kids and teens page 4 Support Groups and Events page 4 Contact Us Continued on page 2
2 Torn Pieces continued As I began to leaf through the pages of the magazines, images that I might not have noticed in another context began almost to leap from the pages the puppet Howdy Dowdy, a monk s robe, a weeping eye, ancient bridges of stone, and photos of flowing water. I tore out words or phrases that spoke both to my pain and my hope for new meaning. Layer upon layer I pasted the images on the poster board. I then sat in amazement at what the pain of my experience had created. Throughout the coming days and weeks of that year I often returned to that simple collage. Through glue, words and the positioning of images, the torn pieces of magazine had come together to teach me. One part of the collage spoke the language of release. Another spoke of possibilities ahead. Each time I returned to that collage, new teachings came into my awareness. And then, oh so gradually, those lessons became the foundation for how I was able to find new meaning in the world around me. You, too, can experience the healing power of collage in grief. The materials are simple magazines, glue, paper and scissors. United with a willingness to listen to the imagery of your heart, these materials can provide new insights into your personal journey and the meaning you are gaining from it. I wish you well as you tear, cut and paste. If you are especially brave, I invite you to share your creation with others. 3 Kids and Teens Corner Family Art Project Supports Meaning-Making by Jill Meyers, MA Child life specialist A variety of activities can be used to support selfexpression and provide comfort for the entire family. One such activity uses collage to create a memory votive candle holder. No matter the age of the family member, this activity invites remembrance, comfort, honoring and connection to loved ones. Collage is a lot like grief, the differing pieces of our thoughts and feelings contained within our hearts and minds when a loved one has died. Through the creation of collage votive candle holders, grief and healing unite into a treasure of one s own design. These creations can be used to help soothe at bedtime, to light in honor of special occasions, or to provide an everyday remembrance, to name a few ideas. Below are items and steps needed in making your own collage votive candle holder. Items needed: Glass votive candleholder Battery-operated votive candle Multi-colored tissue paper Cut or torn pieces of paper (for writing words, names, etc.) Mod Podge (You can make similar substance by mixing water with Elmer s Glue.) Paint brush Permanent markers Instructions: 1. Cover a table with a paper or plastic tablecloth. 2. Place a glass votive holder on the table. 3. Tear or cut various sizes of tissue paper to represent you and your loved one. 4. Use markers to write or draw words, names or memories that remind you of your loved one. 5. Dip the paint brush into a small amount of Mod Podge. 6. Brush Mod Podge onto the votive holder. 7. Place tissue paper and/or paper words on the Mod Podge-covered votive holder. 8. Brush the paper with a top layer of Mod Podge. 9. Set to dry. Your creation is now your own usable, healing art. Standing Together After the death of someone important in a child or teen s life, it can be a bewildering time. We have heard from many youth that they feel alone and that their peers don t get it. Standing Together brings grieving youth together in a safe, supportive and fun environment. Kids and teens meet in small groups with others their own age. They have opportunities to share, engage in creative expression and learn that they aren t alone. Meetings are held from noon to 2 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, October through June. Pizza lunch is provided. Standing Together is a free grief support group for youth in grades K-12. It is facilitated by trained staff and volunteers of Providence Hospice and Home Care of Snohomish County dates April 8, May 13 and June 10 First Presbyterian Church 2936 Rockefeller Ave. Please call to register.
