(Positive effects/goals Reached) Looking Back (Evaluation) Support From The Inmates (Letters of Support) 13 1
Letter From The Jail The idea of Laverne Cox started out as being a simple idea by one person, Tyler Bradley. Bradley was a very active student on Saginaw Valley State University s (SVSU) campus. This last academic year, he has since graduated, and is now a Resident Director for Murray State University. He was very passionate about bringing attention to the issue of diversity. He noticed that many diversity programs did not receive the attention that it deserved. It is at that point when the idea hit him, to bring an individual that specializes in diversity. Through long nights of internet searching finally it stumbled into his lap, Laverne Cox. After gaining support from an overwhelming amount of SVSU Registered Student Organizations (RSO) he booked Laverne Cox and began planning. This small idea took off from there; bringing over 2,200 people (from SVSU, the Saginaw area and even from across the state) roughly 1,300 students from SVSU attended this event managed to bring awareness to a topic people try and avoid. Bringing Cox not only brought awareness but also raised $6,000 for a local organization. 2
The Plan While this event was only one day there was a lot more behind the scenes. Program Board, which was the organization that put on the program, had to book the room months in advance (about six months ahead) to prevent them losing the area. They then began the advertising process in the Fall in order to get the greatest outcome. The day arrived and SVSU was excited for the diversity program: Seating started at 6pm and then Cox gave an hour speech, followed by a question and answer. At the end of the night participants were encouraged to go to the photo shoot with Cox. Before and after the program several groups shared information about campus diversity. 3
Organizing The Crime Organization of this program took support of all of SVSU! Although many volunteers were needed to make the event happen the main organization fell onto Tyler Bradley. He spent months in advance gaining support from SVSU RSOs, getting funds, booking the hotel room. All of the Fall semester was spent advertising and gaining sponsorships. A Facebook group was started to help promote the event via social media. The flyers for the Laverne Cox program were seen all over Saginaw Valley State University s (SVSU) campus, this crime was definitely going to be known by everyone! 4 2
Getting The Funds 5
Getting The Funds Cont. The budget of the program was relatively simple. Laverne Cox s expenses were high, while hotel room and room reservations remained low. This, however, meant that more money had to be raised. As seen on page five there was not a ticket price available; the only people who had to pay were people from the community, which was a $10 ticket. The only reason for this was so that people from the community would not take tickets away from SVSU students. This event was intended for SVSU students thus the ticket fee for the community was necessary. All SVSU students were allotted one additional ticket for a person of their choice to bring. The intention of the extra ticket was to encourage students to bring others to SVSU, thus bringing more people to the Laverne Cox program. 6
Getting The Funds Cont. If there were no ticket charges to Saginaw Valley State University Residents then how did the event raise enough money to still be successful? The overall amount of support and sponsorships received by organizations was overwhelming. The total sponsorships provided were $19,050, whereas the total expense for the program was $19,977. This was extremely close to covering the entire cost of the event. Seeing as how this event was not meant to bring in a profit, this prevented Program Board from worries about outside ticket sales. 7
Know The Criminal Goals! 1.Provide a event that focused on diversity issues, and bring a large amount of students to the event. 2. Educate students, faculty, and the community about diversity and identity issues. 3.Encourage SVSU Students to attend by keeping cost minimal. 4.Maximize meet and greet with Cox. 5.Bring awareness to LGBTQIA community on campus. 8
Freedom! There were many positive effects that came from the achievement of the goals. Increasing awareness of diversity through a program was achieved through support of all the campus organizations. Since the program was able to be held and several informational booths were set up information was readily available and were taken. The education of all those who attended was increased due to several informational booths where they shared information about diversity and identity issues. With the amount of sponsorships that were obtained in the early process of planning, this allowed for ticket prices to remain free for Saginaw Valley State University students. The meet and greet was also a success, over 200 attendees got to meet and take a photo with Cox. The meet and greet was intended to provide hope and support for those who maybe struggling with identity issues. 9
Freedom! Cont. One of the major influential effects of the Laverne Cox program was the unintentional $6,000 raised through the event. During the advertisement process Bradley worked with AIDS walk, a local community organization that focuses on helping those living with HIV/AIDS in the city area; stating that any profit made from the program would be donated. The AIDS walk took place on SVSU s lovely campus where they received the $6,000 donation from to the profit of Laverne Cox program. 10
Looking Back When looking back, the program is considered to be a major success. Each of the goals set in the early months of planning were reached above and beyond what was expected; the positive effects that happened on campus were unbelievable. The program brought many diverse individuals from all around the state of Michigan together to be educated on diversity and identity issues. On the Facebook event page Program Board posted a survey for anyone to provide feedback. The positive feedback was amazing, many on campus students said they would go to another event like this if they could. Overall this was how people rated the program (scale 1-5 five being highest) Event Rating Customer Service (4.1) Ticket Process (4.2) Information Accessibility (4.1) Parking Availability (3.8) Event Location (4.2) Lecture Content (4.4) Lecture Relatability (4.2) Overall Event (4.4) 11
Looking Back Cont. Overall, the event could not have gone better, smiling faces were seen while they listened and learned. It was fantastic to see individuals from around the state; LGBTQIA groups from SVSU as well as from other colleges, groups from the community, faculty, and even more from SVSU students. However, none of this could have happened without support of the community, campus life, and Tyler Bradley s unfailing determination and all of the help he received. 12
