UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SAN FRANCISCO Alumni Newsletter Greetings from UCSF Alumni and friends The academic year is quickly coming to a close. Third years are taking their boards this week, graduation is on the horizon, and the incoming first years are gearing up to start this July We wanted to take this time to share with you some of the ongoings at UC and to remind you of upcoming alumni events. 1

Resident Notes Our current first, second and third year residents are excitedly working on a variety of research and community service oriented projects. Here s a sample of what s going on at UC Upcoming Events Alumni Research Night Friday May 16 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM UCSF Faculty Alumni House 745 Parnassus Ave SSan Francisco CA CE credits. Dinner will be served. Our current Chief Resident - Dr. Julio Sotillo Julio is dedicated to not only improving the oral health of children but also expanding and contributing to their education. Research and academia are also important aspects he finds very fulfilling and looks to include as part of his long-term career goals. AAPD UCSF Alumni Reception May 24, :00PM to 7:00PM Sheraton Hotel TBA UCSF Graduation Our outgoing Chief Resident Dr. Sheila Nguyen on a dental externship in the Philippines. June 20th, 2014 Cliff House restaurant San Francisco, CA 2

Third Year Residents Shirin enjoys going out into the community and meeting new people. She also enjoys teaching students and volunteering in the community. She is a mentor with the Junior Youth Empowerment Program where she focuses on empowering youth to become active agents of positive change in their communities. She is dedicated to concentrating her energies, skills, and time to helping young patients achieve excellent oral health. Dr. Shirin Mullen at an education event Wendy loves to help make dentistry a possibility for all kids. From research in Honduras to outreach in the inner-cities of San Francisco and Chicago, there will be no child left behind But the best part of it is seeing the lights go on in a child s mind and their enthusiasm to learn, or simply smiles, hugs, and besos from the kids we met along the way. None of it would have happened without the guidance and support from alumni like you Drs. Carrie Tsai (left) and Wendy Yang (right) on a clinical research trip to Roatan, Honduras. Niki has executed several projects to improve life at UC. She has improved the esthetics of this clinic by purchasing decorations for the operatories and clinic for the holidays. She has planned and hosted events which bring the residents together. Her annual Christmas party is greatly anticipated She has also created a wall of memories on our bulletin boarddisplaying different activities and events we have participated in. She definitely gives this residency style Drs. Niki Fallah and Gina Graziani at Give Kids A Smile Day. 3

Josh was selected by the predoctoral student body as 2013 Faculty of the Year at the UCSF Community Dental Center, where he teaches and provides restorative dentistry and exodontia to members of substance abuse programs. His research on vital pulp therapies recently won the 1st place award for 2014 Best Scientific Poster from the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry; he was also selected as a top 8 finalist to present his findings at this year's AAPD annual session. Dr. Joshua Connolly at the CSPD Poster Session. Second Year Residents Alex has been an active participant in CSPD, patient advocacy and global health research. She served as the Warren Brandli intern to the CSPD board of directors and published an article in the Winter Bulletin. She was recently accepted into the Global Health Clinic Scholars Pathway program and has attended externships in the Philippines, Cambodia and Guatemala. She also went to Washington DC to act to lobby on behalf of our patients Dr. Alex Malebranche on a global health externship in Cambodia. Will is extremely excited to be part of the UCSF family, he believes that he brings an enthusiasm and energy that is seen by his colleagues and patients. It is his goal that wherever he is that the education and skills he has received represent UCSF well Dr. Will Liou at a community outreach event. 4

Amita enjoys providing dental care to her special needs patients and volunteering her time to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Her diverse background enables her to connect with patients and their family in a more meaningful way and deliver effective, wellrounded healthcare. Her research at UCSF focuses on evaluating the efficacy of text messages to educate parents about caries prevention methods for their children. Dr. Amita Ruehe in clinic with a happy patient. Chad is focusing his clinical research on Cadcam technology and its use in restoring pediatric anterior teeth. He is a dedicated coresident and enjoys serving as Ortho chief. Dr. Chad Zillich with his second year coresidents and their ortho appliances. First Year Residents Krunal, Neha, Gina, Anuhya, and Brett all enjoy doing community service. The first year course load hasn t gotten them down They also enjoy planning events and spending time together. Here are a few shots of them at work: Dr. Krunal Sherathiya at a community outreach event. 5

From left to right Drs. Brett Martin, Gina Graziani, Krunal Sherathiya, and Neha Das (not pictured Anuhya Uppula) Donations will help current residents reach out in the community, participate in organized dentistry, and keep the name of UCSF Pediatric Dentistry alive and positive in our community Please consider donating by visiting us at our brand new website: At UCSF there is a lot of new and good going on. We residents are working hard to make UC and the San Francisco Bay Area a better place. Our department is expanding to include new clinics at Mission Bay and UCSF has merged with Children s Hospital Oakland All of which is very exciting but comes with new families to support and educate in the Bayview and Oakland communities. Please take the time to come to one of our events, come visit, or support us in our efforts Donations to the residents and the program can be made via our new site: Thank you to all you who already have supported the program Alexandra Malebranche, DDS Chief of Community and Global Outreach 6
