2 P AGE 2 SPF100 Youth Leader of the year The SPF100 Youth Leader of the Year is nominated by their peers because they are a positive role model within the group and have proved themselves a top leader. This year s SPF100 Youth Leader of the Year Award goes to Anmol Bhargo for her dedication, commitment and leadership in underage drinking and drug prevention in Somerville. Praise by SPF peers for this year s winner include: He is a kind person who is bursting with ideas. He has strived to make SPF better day after day for a few years now, and plans on continuing to do so. He has either created or helped to create many innovative PSAs. As a fellow SPF youth leader, I have truly enjoyed working with him and simply being in his ever positive presence and I can testify that other youth leaders feel the same.. He has always been a leader among the group, especially with the animating and editing of his PSA. He spends more than the required time working at SPF. He has been instrumental in running campaigns and even went to the Peace conference to show his support and dedication. Anmol has our deepest gratitude and appreciation for all her hard work this year. Congratulations!!! National night Out coming VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The City of Somerville, Somerville Police Department, Somerville Health Department, and the Somerville Office of Prevention will be organizing and hosting National Night Out this year on August We are in need of volunteers to assist with the outreach, set up, and take down of the event. 4 P AGE 4 Welcome Ariella and Olivia ARIELLA KORN Hello! My name is Ariella and I am very excited to be interning in the Office of Prevention this summer. I just completed my first year of graduate school at Tufts University, in which I am working towards a dual-degree in Public Health, with a concentration in epidemiology, and also Nutrition, with a focus on food policy and nutrition interventions. I am originally from Buffalo, NY, but have been a very happy Somerville resident for the past year. I love Somerville s sense of community and the ability to get around with ease on foot, bike, or train. Food and physical activity are very important to me I like to cook, go out to eat (probably too often for my grad school budget) and I just completed my first half marathon in May. I also enjoy CrossFit and skiing. This summer I will be working with Cory Mashburn, the Director of the Office of Prevention, on a data analysis project for Somerville s health surveys of middle and high school students. This survey given every other year focuses on substance abuse, mental health, safety, and behavior regarding diet and physical activity. These data give great insight about trends over time, disparities, and potential areas for improvement in the field of prevention. I am beyond excited to be here and witness the inner workings of the local health department, in the city that I have quickly grown to love. Sincerely, OLIVIA CERQUEIRA My name is Olivia Cerqueira. I am twenty years old and currently a senior at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences majoring in Public Health. As a Somerville resident for my entire life I have seen how addiction and substance abuse impacts the city s residents, especially the youth, and felt it was important to give back to my hometown. This is why I decided to volunteer with SCAP. When I am not in class or volunteering I enjoy spending my time reading, running, and waitressing at my family s business. I am looking forward to spending my summer working with SCAP and helping reinforce their mission of bringing together and mobilizing the diverse community of Somerville to prevent and address issues associated with substance abuse. Sincerely, Olivia Cerqueira
