1 You must complete your 8 hours of Community Service and submit the online form at by December 1, Volunteer Opportunities CHEEKWOOD HOLIDAY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Get in the holiday spirit with these fun Cheekwood volunteer opportunities. Cheekwood's festive holiday season begins Nov. 27 and runs through Jan. 3, offering something special for all ages. Come be part of it. Holiday at Cheekwood programming kicks off Saturday, Nov. 28 and continues each Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 20. Each day, from 9:00am 2:00pm, we'll offer a variety of activities for our younger visitors and their families. There'll be cookie decorating, arts activities, photos with Santa, even the opportunity to see real reindeer. Shifts are 9:00 11:30am and 11:30am 2:00pm, with 12 volunteers needed per shift. This assignment is ideal for groups. Come assist families as they create masterpieces in our Gingerbread House Workshops. Workshops will be offered Nov. 28, from 10:00am noon; Dec. 5, 10:00am noon and 2:00 4:00pm; and Dec. 12, 10:00am noon and 2:00 4:00pm. Four volunteers needed per shift. Holiday Lights opens at Cheekwood Nov. 27, with over 750,000 lights twinkling and sparkling across our grounds. Be among the first volunteers ever to participate in this amazing event, helping to inaugurate this spectacular display. Hosts are needed to direct guests through the displays, provide information about activities, even take family photos of families (with their phones or cameras). Shifts are 5:00 8:00pm and 7:30 10:00pm. Special perk: Hosts' admission and parking are FREE on every night they serve. During Holiday Lights we'll also need shuttle cart drivers to transport guests from far parking sites to the exhibition and back. Drivers must be 21, with a clear driving record. 2 HANDS ON NASHVILLE Volunteer_Opportunity_Search_Page Hands On Nashville (HON) works to address critical issues facing the Middle Tennessee community through volunteer-centric programming. Annually, HON connects thousands of volunteers to service opportunities supporting area nonprofits as well as its programs in urban agriculture, home energy savings, youth leadership development and support of public education. UNITED WAY United Way is working to advance the common good by focusing on the building blocks of a good life education, financial stability, and health. But they can t do it alone. They need the heads, hands and hearts of committed people like you to help us tackle the problems facing our community. United Way provides easy access to a wide range of volunteer opportunities. Whether you want to volunteer with your family, coworkers or on your own, they can help you find the opportunity right for you. SECOND HARVEST Only through your efforts can we achieve our mission of feeding hungry people and working to solve hunger issues in our community. We need volunteers every day to help sort and pack food donations, prepare BackPacks for hungry children, as well as assist with special events and administrative support. When you donate your time to Second Harvest, you become a partner in the fight against hunger in Middle Tennessee. 3 SALVATION ARMY The Salvation Army truly values its volunteers and realizes they are a gift from God. Volunteers enable the Salvation Army to function effectively and efficiently in everything it does from feeding the homeless a hot meal to tutoring students in our after-school program, attending to disasters as they strike to manning an Angel Tree booth during Christmas. The Salvation Army knows that volunteers choose to donate their time and talents and that does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. They are there to encourage our volunteers and provide them with the tools and training they need and support them at all times. If you re considering volunteering, contact Misty Ratcliff, our Director of Volunteer Services at x109 or her at TN PRISON OUTREACH MINISTRY The Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry is a collaborative effort of over 400 volunteers and many local churches, conducting preventative, rehabilitative, and aftercare programming for offenders and their families. Support includes the operation of Christian-based halfway houses and benevolence assistance such as food and clothing. Volunteers are needed for organizing papers, computer research, word processing and entering data into a spreadsheet, photocopying and scanning, basic landscaping, cutting grass, weed eating, general cleaning, wiping windows, taking out trash, and vacuuming. Other possible duties include the moving of items, some light renovation but not anything that requires use of industrial tools; and legal research if students are interested in a legal career. THE BELL GARDEN The BELL Garden exists to cultivate, guide, and encourage shared community values of healthy living and lifelong learning. The BELL Garden supports this mission by providing practical learning opportunities for residents of the community in a setting that promotes physical activity, healthy eating, environmental stewardship, and multicultural connections for all generations. Current initiatives include classroom interaction & hands on lessons in the garden, community events, garden workdays, an after school garden program, and produce tastings. Bell Garden is committed to sharing our harvest with the entire community, including those in need. During our open Volunteer days come by to work in the Garden. 4 YWCA Volunteer Opportunities at the YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee. All volunteers will need to attend our volunteer orientation and training before volunteering. to receive information on the next orientation and to RSVP. Weaver Domestic Violence Center (ages 18+) The Weaver Center is always excited to have motivated, caring and responsible volunteers to provide childcare for our mothers in shelter. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to get to know our amazing children who have been impacted by domestic violence, as well as have them learn from you. As their mothers are expanding their parenting skills through our support group, you will be engaged in various activities ranging from creating a noodle necklace with arts and crafts, to building a whole city with nothing but Legos. Your time is greatly appreciated and you are sure to have a positive impact on their lives! Childcare- Mondays and Thursdays from 5:45pm-7:30pm (offered at various times throughout the year.) Childcare- Tuesdays from 6:15-7:30pm (offered weekly) Family Literacy Center (ages 18+) Individuals in our Adult Education program range from ages and are from over 26 countries. Many of the students balance multiple jobs, young children and families, and financial stressors all while attending class regularly to work on their equivalency diploma. As you can imagine, these barriers often make it difficult for students to achieve their high school equivalency. With dedicated, compassionate, and patient tutors, students are able to have the one on one or small group help they need to complete this milestone. Tutoring our Adult Education students is both rewarding and becomes a learning experience for the students and yourself. Volunteer opportunities are available 6 days a week, in the morning, afternoon or evening to accommodate every schedule. (ages 18+) Girls Inc. is seeking a volunteer to help inspire girls to be strong, smart, and bold. You will lend a hand during our programming by assisting with lessons, managing behavior, and being a positive role model for the girls. This is a wonderful opportunity for those hoping to change the lives of young girls by teaching communication skills, healthy relationships, and self-esteem.
