3 Whether you want to go pink in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month or do something pink-tastic at another time of year, Breast Cancer Now has you covered! From hosting a Pink Ball, setting up a stall, running a pub quiz or going on a street collection, we ll be there to make sure you can maximise your event s fundraising and have fun doing it. Whatever Pink Event you choose to do, we ll support you 100% of the way. You know your university and we know fundraising, so we ve created a Pink Pack specifically to help you get the best out of your event. Right now breast cancer is at a tipping point. More women are surviving. But more are being diagnosed than ever before. Around 11,500 women die from the disease every year that s someone s mother, sister, daughter or friend every 45 minutes. But with your help, we can change that. If we all act now, by 2050, we believe everyone who develops the disease will live. So join us this year to help make this a reality by turning your uni pink!

4 The next few pages will give some examples of different fundraising ideas encompassing daytime events, night-time events and events spanning a full week. Day events Set up a stall Setting up a stall in the Union is a great way to get noticed and get fundraising. All you need to do is speak to your University RAG society or even straight to the Union staff to get permission to set one up. Once you have your stall booked in, all you need to decide is what you want to do with it. From bake sales and fairground style games to static bike challenges, stalls are a great way to get donations rolling in. Top tip: Make sure your stall stands out so everybody knows what you re fundraising for. Get in touch to order your Breast Cancer Now branded materials. Run a sports event From zumba classes to rugby tournaments, it doesn t really matter what sport you pick, just make sure the event is fun and accessible. If you re hosting a tournament you could hold it between existing teams and play on their competitive nature, or you could hold a more relaxed event that people can pay to take part in. Whatever you decide to do, there are lots of opportunities to fundraise both before and during the event why not go round with a bucket asking spectators and teams for donations? Warwick Ultimate Frisbee Tournament Warwick Frisbee held their Annual Ultimate Frisbee tournament and raised an incredible amount in the process. They held it indoors, charged entry per team and were really open about how much of the entry cost would be going to Breast Cancer Now. They created a Facebook group for the event and encouraged teams to sign up for the tournament as early as possible to ensure a good turnout and lots of eager competitors! They also had lots of stash and kit that they sold on the day, which is an excellent example of fundraising during an event. In the end they raised an incredible 1,380!

5 Night events Have a pink night out Any excuse to dress up in pink and have fun with friends is a no brainer! You can do anything from hiring out a venue and hosting your own night out to simply creating a theme for a night at a local club or your university union. And there are plenty of opportunities to fundraise, including charging for tickets, having buckets to collect spare change and selling wristbands and sweets for suggested donations. Quiz night Whether you like science and maths or would just prefer a celebrity picture round, everybody loves a quiz. You could host it in your Union or at a local venue, and as long as you mention that it s for charity most venues will be quite accommodating. You can charge for entry and either use some of the pot of money as a prize for the winning team, or even ask local businesses to donate some prizes (something they re usually willing to do!). Ball Holding a ball can be a fair amount of work, but it s also incredibly rewarding. The key is to do some decent shopping around so you pick a great venue. Make sure you tell them that the event is for Breast Cancer Now, as some venues will lower their prices for a charity event. This is a great chance to get up and coming musicians from your university to play for the ball, as they ll often do it for free. Open mic night These are great fundraisers because there will be hundreds of aspiring musicians at your university all looking for a bit of free exposure! Open mic nights give them a chance to perform, and they ll often bring lots of friends with them. You can either charge entry fees or go around collecting with a bucket on the night. Portsmouth Pink Wednesday Portsmouth Rag hold Pink Wednesday every year for Breast Cancer Now and it s hugely popular with the sports teams and the students in general. This year Pink Wednesday started with a stall in the Union where they advertised their events for the year to come, gave away wristbands and sweets and painted faces in exchange for suggested donations. The stall stayed there well into the night as Wednesday is their Athletics Union night out, which really boosted donations! They had already asked sports teams to take fundraising buckets with them on the night out to collect donations, but by turning it into a competition (always a good idea when sports teams are involved), they managed to collect even more! Finally, they also got the night club to give them 1 from every entry fee. They raised a whopping 2,115.05!

6 The time is now Thank you for joining us. By raising money for Breast Cancer Now, you ll be supporting cutting-edge research to find ways to stop this devastating disease taking lives. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. One in eight women will face it in their lifetime. Nearly 700,000 people living in the UK have experienced a diagnosis. Survival rates for breast cancer have increased dramatically. More than 80 percent of women who develop breast cancer will now live beyond five years. 40 years ago, it was only around half. But that doesn t mean we ve got breast cancer under control. More than 50,000 women in the UK will be told they have the disease this year. That s one woman every 10 minutes. Research has made incredible progress, but despite all we ve achieved women are still dying from breast cancer and they re dying on a heart-breaking scale. Nearly 1,000 women in the UK die from breast cancer every month. We can t live with that. It s time to act. We re funding research at more than 30 universities and research centres across the UK and Ireland. We re working with hospitals across the country to make sure breast cancer patients get the best services and support. We support nearly 400 of the world s brightest researchers. 7 Week events Kick it up a notch Take your pink event to the next level by going pink for the whole week. It s not as hard as it sounds simply put on a range of small and large events across campus over a week! It sometimes helps to pick a theme, for instance you could run a sports week with a different sporting activity each day, starting and ending with big headline events. You may, however, prefer to put on a wider range of activities to get as many different types of people involved as possible. Try to mix up day and night events so that even if there is a specific audience in mind, there ll be something for everyone. Warwick CMD Warwick Classical and Modern Dance society run an event called Pink Week every year. From collections on campus, street collections in local towns, promoting their online fundraising page and hosting an incredible ball at a local venue, they always put an amazing amount of effort into making their Pink Week bigger and better than ever before. Their events are always popular because they have such a massive presence on campus during the week. This year they raised an incredible ! There are loads of different ways to make a week-long event popular and successful. Last year, St Mary s held a brilliant sports week for Breast Cancer Now with different sporting events each day. They charged entry fees for each event, made sure all of the sports teams were directly involved, and turned out in force to fundraise on the day. By kicking off the week with a big UV Zumba Party, they made sure the week started with a bang! The Party also served as great publicity for the rest of the week s events. St Mary s also signed people up for the tournaments and try out sessions before the week even started, ensuring they had loads of enthusiastic supporters on board to make the week a giant success. They raised an impressive 728!

9 The last one We believe that if we all act now, by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live. Emma won t be the last one to die from breast cancer, but there will be a last. Here is Emma s story: Just five days after being diagnosed with breast cancer, 31 year old single mum Emma, from Hemel Hempstead, was told the disease had spread to her bones and could not be cured. She doesn t know how long she ll have left with her children so is writing a manual for her mum, full of tips, ideas and special insights to help them carry on after she s gone. After her local paper ran a story about her involvement with Breast Cancer Now, thousands of people clubbed together to allow Emma and her children to take a dream holiday to Disneyland Paris a special moment for a family where time is incredibly precious. Help us to make the last one a reality.

10 Paying in your money There are three easy ways to send your money to us: 1. Take your money to the rag office. They will count and pay it in directly to Breast Cancer Now. 2. Call our Supporter Engagement team on to make a credit or debit card payment. Please send us all money raised within one month of your event. Please don t send us cash in the post! And please remember to send us any completed sponsorship forms, so that we can claim Gift Aid. 3. If you would like to make a bank transfer you can call our Supporter Engagement team on for the Breast Cancer Now account details. 11 Staying Safe and Legal We re here to help you make sure that you and your participants stay safe and legally compliant when fundraising for us. Take a look at the guidelines below and please get in touch if you need any more advice. Collections If you re planning a collection in a public place, you need to seek permission from the relevant person. For street collections this will be your local council s licensing department, for stations, supermarkets and shopping centres you can request permission from the manager of the site. Try to ask as far in advance as possible as these often get booked up weeks in advance. Raffles You can hold a raffle as part of a larger event without needing a license, as long as you stick to these rules: - Only sell tickets during the event itself - The draw must take place at the event - No cash prizes can be given - All tickets must be sold at the same price with no discounts for multiple purchases (e.g. you cannot sell tickets for 1 each and 3 for a strip of five tickets) You can find out more about raffle and lotteries law by visiting Licenses You may need a license if your event involves the sale of alcohol, public entertainment or selling food items. Please contact your local council s licensing department to check. Promotional materials If you would like to use the charity s logo on your promotional materials, please get in touch and we can send along with our brand guidelines. On any promotional materials you produce please make it clear that you are fundraising in aid of, rather than on behalf of, Breast Cancer Now. Health and Safety You should carry out a risk assessment for any activity you organise to help keep you and your participants as safe as possible.
