Anngela Williams The Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board of Cuyahoga County s Training Institute is an approved provider through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board and the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist Board offering Recognized Clock Hours (RCH) to Chemical Dependency Professionals as well as Continuing Professional Education hours (CPE) to Counselors and Social Workers. Fees for the ADAMHS Board Training Institute workshops are $25 per half-day (2-4 hour) session and $45 for a full-day (5+ hour) session. Occasionally, workshops will be offered free on an as-needed basis per topic. Workshop fees are non-refundable. The ADAMHS Board is using Eventbrite to process ALL registrations. Payment can be made by credit card and/or checks made payable to the ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County. Invoices may be sent to organizations. All workshop participants must be registered and confirmed in advance through Eventbrite. An order confirmation and entrance ticket to the workshop will be ed through Eventbrite immediately after the registration process is complete. Walk-ups and cash payments will not be accepted. To register for a workshop, visit the Web site listed at the end of each workshop description. Please note that each session has its own unique Web address. If you want to attend more than one session, you must register for each session individually through its unique Web site. Please arrive on time for all scheduled workshops. If you arrive late to a workshop you will not receive a certificate. Partial credit will not be given. In order to receive a certificate of completion, you must be present for the entire workshop. General Information: All workshops are held in the Training Institute, located in the ADAMHS Board offices on the 6 th Floor of the United Bank Building, 2012 West 25 th Street. Free parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. All visitors must check-in at the blue Parking Attendant Booth located in the lot directly behind the building on the east side of West 26 th Street. Visitors are to inform the attendant that they are visiting the ADAMHS Board and will be directed to available parking spaces or may receive complimentary valet parking. Please bring the ticket provided to you from the attendant to the ADAMHS Board receptionist for validation. Free and metered parking is also available on the street. OPEN LEVEL ENTRY LEVEL INTERMEDIATE LEVEL Participants must meet the minimum education level and credential requirements indicated: Open to anyone seeking the most basic understanding/awareness of the topic presented. Registrants must be Certified Chemical Dependency Assistants, Registered Applicants for Prevention, Social Worker Assistant or STNA. Registrant must be a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor II, Licensed Social Worker, or Licensed Professional Nurse. William M. 3 The Lure and Danger of Prescription Drug Abuse Robert Garrity, JD, LISW-S, LICDC January 20, 2017 Open The rise of prescription drug abuse in the last decade has broken all previous records. Purity, availability and knowledge about these drugs have enabled them to become abused by all ages and socioeconomic classes. The origin of abuse and attempts to control diversion will be discussed, as well as case studies and current prevention and treatment models. To register for this session, please use Eventbrite. Evidence Based Treatment for Eating Disorders Samantha Mishne, MSW, LISW-S, LICDC. February 10, 2017 IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND A WORKSHOP FOR WHICH YOU ARE CONFIRMED, PLEASE CALL TONYA BIRNEY, ADAMHS BOARD TRAINING OFFICER, AT (216) , EXT Open Learn about the evidence based treatment for adult and adolescents diagnosed with a eating disorders. Participants will also learn about the level of care and DSM-V criteria to assist in the treatment and diagnosis of an eating disorder. Eating disorder assessment strategies will also be identified. No refunds will be provided. Participants who were denied admission to a closed workshop will be placed on a waiting list and granted admission in the event of a cancellation. Wait-listed individuals will be contacted in the order in which the requests were received. Page 2

4 Psychiatric Medications Update Paul Martin, DO February 24, 2017 Entry/Intermediate We will discuss commonly used psychiatric medications for children, adolescents and adults. Those include antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood-stabilizing and stimulant medications, antianxiety medications, anticonvulsants and sedative/hypnotics. We will further explore the use and overuse of psychiatric medications in children. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Paul Martin, DO March 17, 2017 Entry/Intermediate Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, a devastating but completely presentable disorder resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure, is a pattern of physical, developmental and functional deficits in an individual. We will examine the syndrome and it distinctive components, psychiatric disorders that are closely linked to FAS, as well as treatment, planning and prevention for children and families affected by this disorder. Basic Counseling Skills: The Keys to Harnessing the Power of the Therapeutic Relationship Tonya Birney, MS, LPC, LICDC, OCPS II March 21, 2017 Entry/Intermediate Every counselor must develop a solid repertoire of basic counseling skills in order to function effectively. These skills form the basic communication pattern between the counselor and client; it as well facilitates both the therapeutic relationship (maintenance) and content (task) functions of the treatment intervention. This workshop will review: core conditions, dimensions of nonverbal communication, basic communication skills and advanced counseling skills used in therapy. We will also explore how the counselor s personal philosophy, theory of change and theoretical orientation affects the client s outcomes in therapy. The Power of Group Work Tonya Birney, MS, LPC, LICDC, OCPS II March 28, 2017 Entry/Intermediate Group therapy is a form of psychosocial interaction in which a small group of clients meet regularly with a therapist to talk, explore and discuss current problems with each another. Group work can be especially helpful for those individuals who have problems with interpersonal relationships. This workshop will review that basics of group therapy: types, stages of development and counseling techniques. Attendees will also have the opportunity to complete group work and to observe video interactions of group psychotherapy sessions to reinforce concepts presented throughout the day. Page 3

7 Presenter Information Tonya Birney, MS, LPC, LICDC, OCPS II earned her Masters of Science Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Walden University and her Bachelor s Degree in Business Management from Notre Dame College of Ohio. Tonya currently is the Training Officer for the Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services Board of Cuyahoga County, where her responsibilities include coordinating the Training Institute. A certified trainer for the Girls Institute of Ohio, Tonya has presented workshops in this region for the State of Ohio Department of Parks and Recreation and most recently the Midwest Alcohol Policy Summit held in Columbus, Ohio. Tonya s theoretical orientation is relational cultural theory and she specializes in working with clients and their families who are suffering from substance use disorders and other addictions. Tonya was selected to represent the state as an item writer for the ICRC AODA Prevention Exam in 2011 and she currently works in private practice at CJ Hendry & Associates in Westlake, Ohio. Robert Garrity, JD, LISW-S, LICDC, received his B.S. in Pharmacy from The University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was a pharmacist for 15 years. He then earned his J.D. from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Bob is admitted to practice law in Ohio, and the U.S. District Court, N.D. Ohio. He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, and maintains a law practice concentrating on administrative and criminal law. Bob is also a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC) and an Internationally Certified Clinical Supervisor. He received his Masters in Social Work from Cleveland State University in 2006, and is a Licensed Independent Social Worker - Supervision Designation (LISW-S). With these credentials, Bob works with clients who struggle with chemical dependency and mental health issues. Dr. Paul Martin, DO, completed a residency in psychiatry at Case/Metrohealth and a fellowship in Forensic Medicine, Syracuse University. In addition to several years as a staff psychiatrist working in jails, crisis centers and prisons, he has served as consultant to State of Wisconsin public defenders regarding competency issues. As a consultant he has presented throughout the states of New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio to social services, law enforcement, probation, school personnel, businesses and universities on topics of mental health issues, stress and violence in the workplace, and adolescent violence. Samantha Mashne, MSW, LISW-S, LICDC,earned her Masters of Social Work degree in clinical social work from Smith college school for Social Work in Since that time she has worked with children, adolescents, and young adults in a community mental health setting and currently works as a therapist for the Emily Program in Cleveland, Ohio. She is also an adjunct faculty in the Masters program at Case Western Reserve Mandel School of Applied Sciences. Samantha s current clinical focus is using dialectical behavior therapy to treat adolescents and adults. Page 6
