Family Support Group 5:30 pm DEC. 8 TH START TIME Support group for families/friends of adults living with a mental illness at Oakland Ave. Presbyterian Church, Rock Hill in Classroom 203. Quarterly Education Meeting December 8 th - 7:00 pm in the OAPC Basement Dining Room for a holiday dinner and volunteer appreciation for those who were involved in programs, support groups and presentations during There is no need to bring anything for this holiday celebration the affiliate will provide the meal. Our guest speaker will be Bill Lindsey, NAMI South Carolina Executive Director, who will update us on his work advocating for those living with mental health conditions and their families at the SC State House and with agencies supporting our interests. Third Monday of the Month Support group for parents of children and adolescents who are experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges or are diagnosed with a mental illness. 292 Munn Rd., Fort Mill, Education Building Room 214. 2 NAMI Piedmont Tri-County December 2015 Page 2 NEW AND RENEWING NAMI PIEDMONT TRI-COUNTY MEMBERS: Brenda Artemes Aaron Collmer Doris Gardner Diane Brown Ceil Collmer Carol Martin Beverly Cardwell Cathy Farrell Karen Mayse Lena Wallace This FREE series of 12 sessions is for caregivers and provides basic education about brain disorders and ways to improve the lives of families living with someone who has a mental illness. The Family to Family course will cover information about schizophrenia, the mood disorders (bipolar disorder manic-depression, major depression), panic disorder, borderline personality disorder, obsessive compulsive Disorder OCD, and co-occurring brain and addictive disorders. A Rock Hill Course is scheduled to begin Saturday, January 9th at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church. Registration is required - contact Judy Rauppius (803) This program shares early-onset signs and symptoms of mental illness in children and adolescents to school teachers, child-serving agencies and community partners. Please let us know if you are interested in a presentation to school or organization that works with children/adolescents. We conducted a presentation for the graduating Senior Education Majors at Winthrop on November 4 th. The course is a free, six week (15 hours) education program developed specifically for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents who have been diagnosed with a mental health condition or who are experiencing symptoms but have not yet been diagnosed. 3 NAMI Piedmont Tri-County December 2015 Page 3 next series to be offered in the late winter/early spring call (803) Ending the Silence is a new program for NAMI South Carolina. This prevention and early intervention program engages students in a discussion about mental health and suicide awareness. The 50-minute in-school presentation is designed for middle and high school students. Our affiliate trained presenters for Ending the Silence on July 25 th. We have completed four presentations, one for each of the York County School District parents and also three presentations for Applied Technology Center on November 9 th to 138 students. We have three scheduled for this month at Northwestern High School. AVOID THE HOLIDAY BLUES!
