2 Welcome Thank you for sponsoring the National Parkinson Foundation s inaugural Moving Day walk event. Your commitment to helping us in raising much-needed funds to support NPF s mission is sincerely appreciated. Why We Are Fundraising Founded in 1957, NPF s mission is to improve the quality of Parkinson s care for this generation of Parkinson s patients through research, education and outreach. Since 1982, NPF has funded more than $155 million in research and support services. The core of NPF efforts is its Centers of Excellence network 43 leading medical centers around the globe (28 in the United States) that deliver care to more than 50,000 Parkinson s patients. NPF programs touch more than one million people a year through 39 chapters with 25,000 members, more than 900 support groups and our online resource center, Parkinson.org. NPF launched a national, Parkinson s Helpline at PD-INFO ( ) to answer any questions about PD available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., EST, in English and Spanish. NPF s signature national professional training initiative, Allied Team Training for Parkinson (ATTP) prepares current and future health care professionals to deliver integrated specialized care in a team setting to individuals with Parkinson s disease and their families. NPF has trained more than 1,200 health professionals across the country. Today, as scientists work toward a cure, NPF is also making progress in identifying best treatment options for patients. In the United States, 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, adding to the one million people with Parkinson s disease. An estimated four to six million people around the world have Parkinson s. 2

3 How you can help promote Moving Day As sponsors, you can help us promote Moving Day both within your organization and externally, whether or not you are able participate in the walk as a Company team. Promoting the event will allow exposure both for your Company, as a valued sponsor, and for the NPF mission. Ways to promote Moving Day to everyone 1. Promote Moving Day on your website using the banners available on the Moving Day site. Publicizing your sponsorship efforts on the company website by adding a Moving Day banner will increase exposure and visibility of your efforts among clients and stakeholders, while supporting a great cause! 2. Send an to staff, company and individual contacts. A letter to business contacts explaining the reasons for your sponsorship initiative will allow exposure for the company and its cause! (see sample on page 8) 3. Use the Company Twitter or Facebook pages. Tweets and status updates will go a long way to spreading the word about Moving Day to large audiences. You can even share a current statistic or update about the disease from parkinson.org to get people s attention. 4. Use the Company newsletters to promote the event. An article or announcement about the Company s sponsorship of Moving Day can increase company visibility and provide exposure to the Moving Day mission. 5. Posts on the Company Blog. If you have a blog on your website, include information about the Company s support of Moving Day and its reasons for promoting the NPF cause. 6. Help us network. Word-of-mouth endorsements of Moving Day and the NPF mission amongst colleagues, clients and business contacts will increase interest in the events and the work we are doing. 7. Get staff to spread the word. Tell staff about Moving Day and encourage them to spread the word within their own communities and amongst family and friends. 3

4 Ways to promote Moving Day within your Company 1. Tell people about Moving Day. Talking about Moving Day at a company or team meeting will allow those impacted by Parkinson s disease to take the first step by indicating interest, and motivate them to join or support the cause. 2. Have a manager or company CEO send an to staff. Craft an e- mail sharing the latest facts and figures on Parkinson s disease from parkinson.org and express excitement about supporting a great cause (sample letter on page 8). 3. Post information in your workspace and public places in the office. Place Moving Day information in break rooms and other common areas around the office. 4. Include a blurb in company newsletter or intranet site. Briefly share the company connection to the cause, and a current statistic or update about the disease from parkinson.org. 5. Offer incentives. Conduct a raffle or offer a small gift certificate to the first five people who donate to Moving Day. 6. Get the word out. Let your staff know to spread the word amongst their friends, family and contacts. 7. Set a table at lunch. Set up an information booth about Moving Day in the lunchroom. If possible, offer a small incentive to hand out and attract attention. 8. Combine the walk with company fitness efforts. Using Moving Day as an incentive, plan a fitness goal around the event and ask other coworkers to make a donation for each mile your team walks during the year. The Company can even match it! 9. Have a Dress Down Day in Support of Parkinson s disease. Tell employees to dress down or wear jeans in exchange for a small donation to Moving Day. 10. Get excited! Enthusiasm is contagious. Show how committed the company is to the cause and get them to join the cause! 4

5 Registering a Company Team: Registering as a company team to participate in a Moving Day will allow further exposure for your sponsorship initiative within the community and promote opportunities for team building and employee engagement. Once you have registered, here are some tips to guide you to success: 1. Set goals. How much money do you want to raise? How many team members do you want to recruit? How much money do you want the team to raise? 2. Recruit team captains from within the Company to motivate staff and drive the cause. 3. Begin your fundraising by making a donation toward your Company goals and encouraging staff to do the same. You can even agree to match staff donations. 4. Personalize your team fundraising page with stories, photographs and messages and ask team members to contribute. You may also choose to use the content that is provided. 5. Raise funds online using the center to contact people. The center includes letter templates so writing to people is easy! 6. Have fun! The first three letters of fundraising spell f-u-n, and we want this to be a great experience for you and for your teammates. Use this opportunity as a chance for employee engagement and positive reinforcement. 5

6 Tips for assembling a fantastic Moving Day Walk Company team: 1. Get organized. Meet with NPF Chapter staff to set goals and develop strategies. Recruit additional team captains within your company to help you organize your team. Have senior management endorse the walk to other colleagues by writing a letter to all staff (see sample on page 9) 2. Spread the Word. the link to the team page to your contacts and staff. Consider holding an informal company meeting to generate interest. Include Moving Day information in the company newsletter, intranet or other correspondences. Set up a walk team registration table in a common area. Post posters and flyers in workspaces and public places in the office and display a sign-up sheet in a common workspace area. 3. Motivate. Remind your staff of the importance of raising money to improve the quality of care for people with Parkinson s. Attend and bring as many co-team captains as possible to the kick-off event hosted by the NPF chapter. These are fun and energetic events that inspire and allow for idea sharing. Let staff know about the difference their support makes for those living with Parkinson s disease by communicating the local program offerings or recent research highlights. 4. Build Team Spirit. Share your enthusiasm for this cause. Hold a rally or kick-off. Company teams, can work with NPF chapter staff to plan an in-house kick off. 6

7 Tips for fundraising success to share with all your team members: 1. The No. 1 reason people donate to a cause is they have been asked. Tell everyone you know that you are sponsoring and participating in the Moving Day walk to benefit the National Parkinson Foundation and need their support. The key is to ask. 2. and letter-writing campaigns are one of the most effective and easiest ways to raise money for your walk efforts. You can reach many potential donors who might be located in other cities or across the country. Draft a letter or letting them know that you are participating in the NPF Moving Day walk and why (samples letters are available on online team pages once Moving Day registration is complete). 3. Steps for your /letter-writing campaign. Develop your mailing list to include address book, corporate holiday card list, clients, vendors, friends, family and others you know. Compose your /letter. A personal note about why your Company is sponsoring Moving Day will have the greatest impact on the recipient. You should also include your fundraising goal, a deadline for donations, the link to your team walk webpage where supporters can make donations, and an invitation to join Moving Day and fundraise, too. Send your s/letters six to eight weeks before the walk. Encourage your contacts to donate by check or online. On average, donors who contribute online tend to give 50 percent more than donors who do not contribute online. Enclose return envelopes with your mailed letters. Send thank-you notes to your supporters. 7

With your support, we will help people with Parkinson s disease and their loved ones live healthier lives while getting access to the best treatment options. As many as one million people in the United States live with Parkinson s disease, a degenerative brain disorder for which there is no cure. This complex disease affects speech and motor functions, and can lead to slow physical movement, muscle rigidity, tremors, and dementia in its advanced stages. Each year 60,000 new cases are diagnosed, increasing the need for care options, support, as well as a collective drive for research and better treatment options. Since 1982, NPF has funded more than $155 million in care, research and support services. The NPF Moving Day Walk allows us a unique opportunity to contribute to their mission through an event that celebrates the importance of movement to people with Parkinson s disease. The fun-filled, family-friendly event is being held in cities across the nation. In addition to a walk, it will include a Movement Pavilion with yoga, pilates, and tai-chi demonstrations, as well as other fun activities. Here are two ways you can help us support the Movement and make a difference for everyone living with Parkinson s: You can sign up as an individual Walker in a city of your choice, or create or join a walk team, which can consist of colleagues, family and friends. Or, you can make a tax-deductible contribution of any amount to Moving Day from the event website: Thanks to the continuous generosity of family and friends like you, NPF staff and affiliates are making great strides toward better treatments and a cure. This fun-filled, family-friendly event will be held on (day & date) at (walk location). In addition to serving as a sponsor of the Walk, (company name) is committed to having a large team of no less than (number) Walkers and achieving a fundraising goal of ($amount). To accomplish this objective, I m asking each of you to join our Moving Day team. Parkinson s disease currently affects one million people in the United States and four million people worldwide. With your support NPF will continue its mission: to improve the quality of care for people with Parkinson's through clinical research, education and outreach. Joining this great team initiative is easy!
