3 Description of the FOCUS Family Program The FOCUS Program is a brief program for families contending with single or multiple trauma or loss events. It has been used widely as a stand alone family intervention or as an adjunct to other individual, family or group services. Developed by a team from the UCLA and Harvard Medical Schools, the FOCUS Program provides a structured approach for joining with traditional and non traditional families, crafting shared goals, and then working with parents, children and the entire family to bridge communication, practice specific skills that support family resilience, and make meaning out of traumatic experiences. An important way that FOCUS accomplishes these goals is by eliciting narrative timelines from each family member that capture their unique experiences, attributions, and concerns. In family sessions children and parents are then guided to share their stories and questions in a manner that promotes a shared understanding of what the family has been through, an appreciation of the unique needs of individual family members, and the skills needed to talk about difficult issues and collaboratively problem solve and create a meaningful path forward. The FOCUS program has been administered to hundreds of thousands of military family members over the past seven years and has been implemented in a wide range of civilian community, medical, clinical and school settings. It is especially recommended for families within the child welfare, juvenile justice, medical and military systems. Research has repeatedly confirmed that families participating in this brief program report reductions in distress and symptomatic behaviors for both parents and children and increases in child pro social behaviors and family resilient processes.
4 Meet the Faculty William Saltzman, PhD Co-developer of FOCUS Program Professor, California State University, Long Beach UCLA Trauma Psychiatry Program William Saltzman, Ph.D.: Dr. Saltzman is a clinical psychologist and Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy at California State University, Long Beach. He is lead author of the programs Trauma and Grief Component Therapy for Adolescents (TGCT A) and Families OverComing Under Stress (FOCUS). Both are evidencebased programs that have been broadly disseminated nationally and internationally.
