JOIN US CITY YEAR UK
Introduction by Sophie Livingstone, Chief Executive Thank you for your interest in a staff position with City Year UK. Across three countries - the UK, the United States and South Africa - City Year is more than a charity or organisation. Together we are a movement for social change. All of us, from staff to trustees, to volunteers and alumni, are a part of that movement, pioneering a different way to address social and educational challenges through a voluntary year of service. I caught the City Year bug when I first heard our volunteers tell their stories of impact. Ever since, I have been, and always will be, a member, just as much as any of our full-time volunteers wearing their bright red jackets in schools every day. Every other member of staff has his or her own story of falling in love with the ideas, or the actions, or the values, behind our recognisable uniforms. Each one contributes in some unique way to building something bigger and more important than themselves. I hope that in the course of reading this document, flicking through our Idealist s Handbook, and meeting our existing staff and volunteers, you ll be similarly taken with the idea of joining the City Year family. Sophie Livingstone Chief Executive, City Year UK
Background Information City Year UK is a youth social action charity which challenges 18 to 25-year-olds to tackle educational inequality through a year of full-time voluntary service. As mentors, tutors and role models in schools, they support pupils growing up in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the UK. The City Year experience empowers these exceptional and diverse young people to realise their aspirations and grow as leaders, both throughtheir impact on children s lives and through training, coaching and career development opportunities. The energy and commitment of City Year volunteers affects the climate of a whole school, helping to create an environment in which children from disadvantaged communities can excel. Pupils are enthusiastic about the enjoyment City Year volunteers bring, are inspired to work towards their aspirations for later life, and are encouraged to live up to high standards for their own behaviour, learning and interactions with their community. HISTORY OF CITY YEAR FUTURE PLANS First established in Boston, Massachusetts in 1988, City Year was a pioneering vision: that young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing America s most pressing socio-economic issues. City Year came to the UK in 2010, launching with seven trailblazing volunteers in London schools. In 2013 we launched in Birmingham, and expanded to Greater Manchester in City Year now also operates in 26 cities in the US, as well as Johannesburg in South Africa. Currently operating in London, Birmingham and Greater Manchester, our ambition is that by 2020, ten years after launching in the UK, we will be in five cities across the UK. We also hope to achieve formal government recognition for the status of full-time volunteering as something uniquely powerful - an optional but nonetheless widely understood and respected civic service year which should be among the options for young people as they transition from full-time education to working adult life.
CITY YEAR UK CULTURE City Year UK is an idealistic and ambitious organisation delivering and building the case for a service year in the UK. At the centre of City Year s idealistic culture is an ever-growing collection of stories and quotations from many cultures and sources, which we call founding stories because they are woven into the fabric of the organisation and are a foundation for our work. Each story conveys a civic value that guides us, or sets us thinking about service. We refer to these stories when we want to illustrate a point, we apply them to our work each day, and we are always looking for more. Here is an example of one of City Year s founding stories, Cathedral building: CATHEDRAL BUILDING Once upon a time a traveller from a distant land arrived in a small town. He came upon a great crowd of people producing a great deal of noise, dust, and commotion. He approached the nearest labourer and said, I ve travelled from afar and seen many labours for many purposes. What are you labouring at here? The labourer replied curtly, Can t you see? I m digging a hole. The traveller approached a second labourer and asked the same question. The man replied gruffly, Can t you see? I m shaping stones. The traveller was baffled.he approached a third labourer and posed the question a final time. This time his interlocutor looked up with a beamingface full of pride andsaid, Can t you see? We re building a cathedral. Author unknown: adapted from The Cathedral Within by Bill Shore Medieval cathedrals took centuries to build, and no one person working on them would have been able to see the entire project from conception to completion. Nevertheless, every worker drew inspiration from the knowledge that they were contributing to something wonderful and lasting, something larger than they ever could have created alone. Here at City Year, each of our roles draws its greatest meaning from the grand design of which it is a part - how thrilling that we are not just staging an event, completing a spreadsheet, or reading to one child, but also building the site, building the organisation and building national service - a tool that can change the world! If this story resonates with you - if you want to build City Year and build national service, whatever your own role in it - we would like to hear from you!
City Year UK Vision & Mission City Year UK s vision, mission and values are referenced every day throughout the whole organisation in what we do and how we act. VISION Our vision is of a society where all children are inspired to believe in themselves and supported to excel by a generation of young people whose commitment to a year of voluntary service is universally respected. MISSION Our mission is to empower young role models to help children from disadvantaged communities succeed in school. We bring together the public, private and voluntary sectors. We give our volunteers the training an personal development they need to become empowered and effective leaders. We demonstrate the power of individual action to drive collective impact. We create an opportunity for service to become integral in society as a catalyst to transform lives. VALUES Responsibility: we are the change we wish to see in society. Inclusion: we unite from all backgrounds to serve a cause greater than ourselves. Progression: we are dedicated to the personal and professional development of all. Action: we don t just talk, we do. We are always ready. Excellence: we strive for nothing less, no matter where we start.
Employee Testimonials City Year UK s vision, mission and values are referenced every day throughout the whole organisation in what we do and how we act. City Year is a place that has allowed me to be challenged personally and professionally. Through their support and training, I was able to progress from volunteer to Impact Officer. I am encouraged by the growth and energy of the children and volunteers and witnessing firsthand the difference and impact the programme makes in their lives. ELLIE GREENSLADE, IMPACT OFFICER Working with City Year has allowed me to fulfil my ambition of playing an active role in reducing educational inequality. I m driven by a fantastic group of colleagues from our Chief Executive to our inspirational volunteers who are at the heart of our programme. EMILE SHERROTT, PROGRAMME COORDINATOR I love working at City Year UK. It s a fun, friendly and creative environment with talented people who all share the same vision.
