Workplace Ambassador Toolkit
Daffodil Month For 80 years, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) has been Canada s cancer voice and leading authority on the disease. We re the only organization that fights all types of cancer, supports and advocates for patients and their families, and champions those who care about a future where no Canadian fears cancer. Daffodil Month, held every April, is our national fundraising campaign. Monies raised allow us to continue our critical work in the fight against cancer. The daffodil is resilient. It survives our harsh winters and is the first flower to bloom in the spring, a time of renewal and hope. For those living with cancer, the daffodil is a symbol of strength, courage and life. Together, Canadians rally around this symbol every year in support of world-class research and support services. When the ones you love are diagnosed with or die from cancer, friends and family often want to do something to help or honour them. Fundraising enables change and we can all have a part in advancing the cancer cause through our generosity. This April, at the Canadian Cancer Society, we want you to know Daffodil Month is a special opportunity to make a difference. Thank You Cancer touches the lives of too many loved ones. Each of us has been impacted by the disease in some way. April is Daffodil Month it s THE month to fight back against cancer at your workplace. Thank you for joining the fight as a Workplace Ambassador! Workplace giving is a simple and effective way for businesses and their employees to support the Canadian Cancer Society. You are the key to a successful workplace campaign! Take pride in the fact that you are truly making a difference. This toolkit has been designed to assist you throughout your campaign. Please take some time to review and do not hesitate to address any concerns with your Canadian Cancer Society staff partner. Staff Partner: Phone:
Role of the Ambassador Ambassadors are key to the success of every campaign. You are the frontline volunteers who approach your peers in the workplace to raise awareness about Canadian Cancer Society s vital role in the fight against cancer. You will provide your colleagues with an opportunity to make an informed choice about charitable giving by doing these three simple things: Inform Explain to your colleagues the benefits the Canadian Cancer Society brings to our community. Describe the impact of a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society. Deliver a call to-action (i.e., what you're asking of them). Promote how their contribution will make a difference. Promote your workplace campaign. Ask Ask your colleagues if they would like to support the work of the Canadian Cancer Society by making a donation. Collect completed pledge forms. Follow up by answering questions and visiting colleagues who were absent or undecided. Thank Thank your colleagues for their time and participation. Thank you for volunteering your time to canvass your colleagues. By asking for donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, you are advancing our mission and helping cancer patients and their families by funding life-saving research and support services so that more Canadians survive and no one has to face cancer alone.
The Canadian Cancer Society Mission The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer. Vision Creating a world where no Canadian fears cancer. Values These serve as guidelines for our conduct and behaviour as we work towards our vision. Caring We are passionate, considerate, respectful and empathetic toward those individuals and families touched by cancer and our colleagues. We believe that all people should be treated with consideration and dignity. Our encouraging and supportive environment allows volunteers and staff to thrive, and contributes to our ability to advance our cause. Courage We value the determination and drive of our volunteers and staff to take bold steps to effect positive change. We recognize that such spirit requires a unique strength of character an inherent quality found in the hearts and minds of people who champion the cancer cause. Integrity We are honest and ethical in all that we do, and engage in responsible decision-making that reflects the highest standards of conduct. This ensures that our credibility, leadership and use of donor dollars is never in question. Progressive We value our history of learning as we strive for continuous improvement and development at all levels of the organization. We embrace a creative approach to finding solutions that are appropriate and consistent with the strategy, character and abilities of the organization. We value diversity and work hard to create a collaborative environment where we benefit from the cultural perspectives of others.
Our Research Investing in the best research has led to tremendous progress against cancer. We know more about what causes cancer, how it develops, how best to treat it and how we can improve the quality of life of people living with cancer. Today, about 60% of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive at least 5 years after their diagnosis. In the 1940s, survival was about 25%. In , the Canadian Cancer Society funded $40 million in leading-edge research supporting more than 340 projects across the country, thanks to our donors. As the largest national charitable funder of cancer research in Canada, we are leading the fight against cancer.
Our Services Our Cancer Information Service, peer support and online communities offer assistance and information for people touched by cancer. We measured the impact of these programs and services, and we are glad to report our findings. The numbers show that the Society with the support of our dedicated volunteers and generous donors helps people to have a better quality of life.
Why We Fundraise Your support matters. Every dollar you raise or donate makes a difference - lives are changed and saved every day because of your support. By supporting Daffodil Month, you ll help:
Your Workplace Campaign Now that you have a more in depth background on the Canadian Cancer Society, let s look at your workplace campaign. A combined and integrated employer and employee effort will result in a successful workplace campaign. First, set an achievable goal for the overall campaign. Once you have a goal set, plan out how you are going to reach it and put that plan into action! Employee Giving Corporate Gift/Match Workplace Fundraiser Promote Your Workplace Campaign Posters - We can provide you with poster templates to help promote your campaign. Logo - The Cancer Fighter logo is available for you to use on any materials you develop on your own. Tip: Do not alter the logo in any way, such as changing the colours or stretching it. To ensure legibility, please make certain the logo is a minimum of 1 wide and is placed on a solid background clear of any other graphic elements. Media - We can help you promote your campaign with our media contacts. Tip: Receiving any type of event coverage through the media can be a challenge, especially in larger communities; however, community-based media are always interested in local people who are making a difference. Social Media - Use the hashtags #DaffodilMonth #JoinTheFIght. Tip: Good photography use is key. Use photos that are engaging and tell a story about your event and why people should donate to you. Limit the amount of text in the images for greater impact.
4 Steps to Successful Canvassing The most effective method of fundraising is face-to-face or one-on-one canvassing. There are four basic steps to successful canvassing: Prepare Ask Thank Follow-Up Step 1: Prepare Learn about the Canadian Cancer Society before you begin asking co-workers for their donation. You must be able to answer their basic questions and concerns and have appropriate information ready so that your canvass will be as effective as possible. Receive coaching from a Canadian Cancer Society representative in a format that is convenient for you Review and become familiar with the information in this toolkit and on our website at cancer.ca There are several other things you can do to help prepare for a more successful canvass: Consider your own personal reasons for giving: make your donation first Schedule brief canvass visits with employees. Be sure to take into consideration the best times and days to meet with them. You want to ensure that you will not be interrupting them at an inconvenient time. Identify people that you have a good relationship with and plan to approach them first. This will help build confidence and momentum in canvassing. Step 2: Ask For The Gift People give to people and the number one reason people don t give is that they were not asked. Making the ask personally will increase your success rate. Set the tone: Thank your colleague for agreeing to speak to you and for his/her past support (if information available). Explain that the purpose of the visit is to talk about the Canadian Cancer Society, the workplace campaign and to ask for their support State the Case: Explain your personal reasons for supporting the Canadian Cancer Society and also outline some key messages about the Canadian Cancer Society s impact. Include any pertinent information that you feel would appeal to the potential donor. Ask for the Gift: Present each person with their pledge form and information sheet and ask them to consider supporting the campaign. Don t forget to explain the benefits of monthly giving. Let them know that you are hoping for an early response but that you would be glad to give them the time they need to make their decision. Ask them if they have any questions and make sure that you get answers back to them right away. If you aren t sure of answers, contact your Canadian Cancer Society staff partner.
4 Steps to Successful Canvassing Step 3: Thank It is important to thank everyone, even those people who do not donate. Thank people for their time as well as their contribution. Remember, the impression you leave is the one that people will remember when they think of the Canadian Cancer Society. You may thank in person or send a thank you note. Step 4: Follow-Up & Wrap-Up Ensure that everyone has been given an opportunity to participate in the campaign Keep track of anyone who was away on vacation or sick leave and make sure that they have been canvassed before you close out your campaign. Make sure that anyone who had questions that you were unable to answer receives a reply so that they can make their decision regarding their donation. Once you have established that your canvass has been completed, compile the results and pass them along to your Canadian Cancer Society staff partner. Tips for Responding to Questions Listen and empathize Make sure the person feels you are hearing their concerns. Show that you understand the objection, but don t agree with them. Instead, say: I understand why you feel that way. Have you considered? Encourage questions and discussion Let people express themselves. Welcome their questions. It gives you an opportunity to address their concerns and correct any misconceptions they might have about the Canadian Cancer Society. Relax and be yourself You have an important idea to present. Making the information your own will help you relax. You should never feel like you have to argue or match wits with anyone. Your job is simply to convey to people that the Canadian Cancer Society is a leader in the fight against cancer. Don t worry if you don t know the answer You re not expected to know everything about the Canadian Cancer Society. If you don t know the answer to a question, tell people you will find the answer and get back to them. Contact your Canadian Cancer Society staff partner.
Sample Communication is key to a successful campaign. This template can be customized to send an to staff announcing your Daffodil Month Workplace Giving Campaign. Dear (firstname), Cancer touches the lives of too many loved ones. Each of us has been impacted by the disease in some way. April is Daffodil Month it s THE month to fight back against cancer in OUR workplace. The daffodil is resilient. It survives our harsh winters and is the first flower to bloom in the spring, a time of renewal and hope. For those living with cancer, the daffodil is a symbol of strength, courage and life. Together, Canadians rally around this symbol every year in support of world-class research and support services. This year, I am leading the fight against cancer for us. As our Daffodil Month Workplace Campaign Ambassador, I choose to support the Canadian Cancer Society because I believe in the work they are doing. They are the only organization that fights all types of cancer, supports and advocates for patients and their families, and champions those who care about a future where no Canadian fears cancer. (Tell a quick story of how cancer has affected you). Did you know that nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes? With your support, we can do our part by supporting life-saving research and support services so that more Canadians survive and no one has to face cancer alone. I only need a few minutes of your time to chat. Thanks for your consideration. Sincerely,
We encourage donors to make a monthly donation. Monthly Giving A monthly donation is the best way to make a big difference in the fight against cancer, because they not only help reduce administrative costs, but also provide a predictable source of income that allows us to more effectively plan ahead and make the most out of donor dollars. A monthly gift can be made by credit card or by direct debit payments (if a donor provides a void cheque). Monthly gifts will be deducted from the donor s bank account or charged to their credit card on the 1st or the 15th of each month. Monthly donors receive a consolidated tax receipt in January for their total giving during the previous year. Donors have complete control over their monthly gift and can change or cancel it at any time simply by contacting the Canadian Cancer Society. We appreciate and value your support of the Canadian Cancer Society s monthly giving program. It truly is one of the most effective ways to support the Canadian Cancer Society. Recording and Receipting Donations All donations should be recorded on the general donation forms provided. The form has been designed to simplify record keeping. For your campaign, it is best that all forms are collected in person to ensure that all the funds are designated to your specific goal. The Canadian Cancer Society is a registered charity and can issue charitable tax receipts (for eligible donations only), in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency guidelines. In order to do this, donors must completely fill out their donation forms. For donations of $20 or more, tax receipts will be issued to eligible donors following the campaign. Donations of less than $20 will not be receipted unless specifically requested.
