1 BERKELEY FREE CLINIC, SATURDAY SERVICES COLLECTIVE Clinic Address: 2339 Durant Avenue, Berkeley, CA Clinic Number: (510) SATURDAY SERVICES TRAINING INFORMATION Applications are due Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 11:59pm. Early submission is highly recommended! Thank you for your interest in joining the Saturday Services Collective, the transgender, gender non conforming, and women s services section of the Berkeley Free Clinic! The Berkeley Free Clinic (BFC) is a collective organization that started in 1969 as a street medicine clinic to support demonstrators during the People's Park riots and demonstrations in Berkeley. It has since been providing community based medical and dental care, peer counseling, and community referrals. As part of the BFC, the Saturday Services Section strives to provide client centered, sexual health services to women, transgender and gender nonconforming people in our community. As a Saturday Services Screener, you will be trained in protocols and counseling to screen clients for asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections and counsel them on sexual risk reduction. Skill learning will be practiced with other cohort members or Saturday section members before being able to do them with clients, which can be intimate (i.e. taking sexual histories and counseling, throat and rectal swabs). Please be open to bringing any concerns about skill building to the training committee and we will do our best to accommodate you while still getting you adequately trained. Upon completion of the STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection)/HIV and pregnancy testing Counselor Training, there will be opportunities for advanced trainings. The advanced trainings are to learn protocols for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and pelvic exams. The next Saturday Services STI/HIV counselor training will begin on Sunday, April 3, Applications are due Tuesday, March 1, Early submission of your application is highly encouraged. In order for you to learn more about the Clinic, you must attend an All Clinic Orientation (ACO) prior to March 22, held at the BFC on the third Monday of every month at 7:30pm. Submission of an application does not guarantee an interview. There will be two levels of interviews: first a phone interview and then an in person interview. In person applicant interviews will be held the week of March 13 19,
2 We desire to select a diverse group of people that represent the community we serve and therefore strongly encourage people of color, LGBTQQIAA people, and other folks who belong to institutionally marginalized groups (or have experience with said groups) to apply. Although we greatly appreciate the interest of every potential applicant, we are not currently accepting cis gender men (i.e. a person who was assigned male at birth and currently identifies as male) volunteers in this section. We encourage cis gender men to look into other volunteer opportunities at the clinic. Becoming a member of the Saturday Services Section at the BFC means becoming an active member of the collective. Please only apply if you have an interest in providing community health care AND would like to be a part of a collective organization. Because we invest so much into each training, we require a minimum two year commitment to the collective; this timeline begins in May 2016 and ends May In addition, Clinic policy requires at least one full year of membership and completion of all membership requirements before a letter of recommendation can be granted. The four month, in depth volunteer training for Saturday Services Screeners puts specific emphasis on client centeredness and harm reduction. We will cover a wide variety of topics, including hands on medical skills, communication, health education, and client advocacy skills, all while working in an intense and demanding team environment. On average, the training involves 7 12 hours a week of classes, various reading and assignments in preparation for class, meetings, and shift commitments for the entire four month period. Classes are held Sundays 9am 3pm. You may only miss a maximum of two classes during the entire training period all trainings are mandatory and any missed must be made up. We recommend that absences be used judiciously as emergencies do come up. Please be on time missing 30 minutes counts as half an absence, and missing more than 30 minutes counts as one full absence. Absences are strongly discouraged; however, if they will be necessary please disclose them now. Clinic shift attendance will start a few hours at a time to get you comfortable with the clinic. You will be expected to attend two shortened shifts a month after the first 6 trainings. In addition, we have a monthly section meeting that you are expected to attend, on the last Monday of each month, 7 9 PM. Once training is complete, trainees are expected to sign up and attend at least two shifts per month. Shifts are on 2
3 Saturdays from 10:00am to 5pm (sometimes ending as late as 7pm, depending on the number of clients). Please think carefully about your schedule and whether or not you can fully commit to being an active and engaged part of our collective before applying. Summary of Application, Training, and Volunteering Requirements To Apply to the Saturday Services Section 1. Attend an All Clinic Orientation (ACO), held every 3rd Monday of the month at 7:30pm in the Clinic; dates of next ACO s are online at clinic orientations/. Please attend one by the end of your first month of training. 2. Fill out an application by answering the questions below (either in this document or you can create your own document) Upload application to this link (Application Deadline is March 1, 2016). Although we would prefer an electronic copy be sent, applications may also be submitted in person at the clinic or by mail (if using this method, please send us an to confirm receipt ): Saturday Services Section TC 2339 Durant Ave Berkeley, CA One phone interview, during which a 1 hour in person interview may be scheduled if selected to continue. 4. All applicants will be notified on or before Friday, March 25, 2016 of their selection into the training. 5. Please be open to bringing any questions, clarifications and/or concerns to interview and the training committee. Training to become a Screener Mandatory attendance at Sunday classes where you will be trained to provide STI screens, as well as general health education and communication skills Attend 2 Saturday Services Shifts per month beginning May 2016 Attend our monthly Saturday Services Section Business meetings (currently held on the 4th Monday of the month, 7 9 PM, at the clinic) Attend at least two all clinic meetings. Complete building security checklist, and confirm knowledge with a current S3 member 3
4 To become a Member After becoming a screener, you commit yourself to the following in order to be voted in as a member of the collective: Attend two Saturday shifts a month Attend monthly section business meeting Attend one All Clinic meeting per quarter Perform off shift tasks to maintain the coordination and operations of Saturday Services Section and those of the Berkeley Free Clinic. A minimum of 15 hours every 3 months (a quarter) is expected (beginning July 2016) Acceptance into the training is not a guarantee of becoming a screener: there are several evaluations and requirements which usually take 3 4 months after the training that must be completed in order to become a screener of the Saturday Service Section. Trainees are evaluated not only based on medical skills, but also on their understanding and practice of effective communication, client centeredness, and their classroom participation, enthusiasm, and ability to function within the collective setting. Please be aware that being a Saturday Services Screener at the Berkeley Free Clinic is both challenging and rewarding. Potentially difficult and new situations may arise. Give considerable thought as to how you will balance the training and clinic requirements with current commitments. Also, we are continually working to increase trans inclusivity both in our section and throughout the clinic, but we want to acknowledge that clinic members and incoming trainees may be at different levels of knowledge about trans issues, and there is still much work to be done. Saturday Services takes the safety and inclusivity of trans clients and clinic members very seriously, and there are many opportunities to get involved with increasing trans inclusivity at a structural level. 4
