1 Tasmania Rotary District 9830 District Governor s Newsletter April DISTRICT CONFERENCE By all accounts this was a great success! I believe we presented a good balance of speakers, plus a mix of Rotary content. The conference was the culmination of 2 years of work by my committee from the Rotary Club of Salamanca and enormous support from the whole Rotary Club. Her Excellency, Kate Warner expressed her pleasure gained from her time with us in fact she and Mr Warner extended their stay until morning tea time. I thank the 200+ Rotarians that made the effort to attend and who took part in the conference from Friday evening until Sunday lunch time. Rotarians must be aware of the importance of District Conferences as a means for Rotarians to mix socially and gain part of the Rotary message over the weekend. DG Tony

3 From The District Governor: April MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH MONTH Saving Mothers and children is one of Rotary s 6 areas of focus. Nearly 6 million children under the age of 5 die each year because of malnutrition, poor health care and inadequate sanitisation. Rotary aims to access quality care so that mothers and their children can live longer and grow stronger. Through Rotary, children traumatized by violence get a chance to be kids again at Rotary camps. Rotarians distribute clean birth kits and train health workers in safe delivery of babies. Rotarians teach mothers how to keep their children alive during their first year. Using technology, doctors are bringing health care to remote areas. Through our donations to the Rotary Foundation, mothers and children in need are given training to take control of their own maternal and health issues. Rotary; Making a Difference DG Tony 3

4 Rotary Club of West Tamar This club have inducted 10 new members as a Friend of Rotary. This classification has been made available to clubs to enable people who wish to belong to, and participate in work that Rotary undertakes but circumstances would previously have prevented them from doing so. These new members come to Rotary bringing many different attributes, ideas and skills that will enrich Rotary and this club. Many of them have already participated in the club s activities and in future they will bolster our volunteer workforce. The older ones bring with them experience and knowledge in many different fields. The younger ones come to the club after many have participated in a Rotary youth programme. They also bring an energy and enthusiasm that is very refreshing. The new younger ones also allow the older club members to perform a function on a more personal way that is one of the most important jobs of any Rotarian and that is as being a mentor. On the same night 14 year old Nick Maynard was inducted as an honorary member. Nick has been associated with the club for several years, attending at different times with his parents and his grandfather. Nick took it upon himself to raise the money required for a new barbecue trailer. He started the fundraising campaign by donating all his pocket money to the cause. This is truly someone epitomising Rotary s motto, Service above self, 4

5 The Rotary Youth Exchange Tassie group as they depart Hobart Airport for a 3 week Aussie Safari. The highly successful Good Friday Fish Feast was held at the Weeding property of Rostrevor this year. It was so successful in fact that food supplies ran out (for which the club apologises) but only after serving in excess of 600 meals. 6 FPS RAG was the first Australian RAG registered by Rotary International. Food Plant Solutions provides a self-sustainable solution that empowers people to make informed choices about what plants to grow and eat that will nutritionally feed their family. We rely solely on fundraising to sustain our activities. Detailed information is available on and you can donate via our website. Funds are urgently needed to enable the continued development of information and resources to support programs being developed in countries throughout the world. We receive s every week asking for assistance. Without ongoing funding, at best we would be very slow in answering the call for assistance as we would need to go to specific clubs to ask for funds to cover the costs. Worst case, we would not be able to answer all calls for assistance. This is the time of the year when clubs and districts are making decisions about where to put the funds raised during the year. Our district has designated $500 each year to the project and some clubs in D9830 have also donated to the FPS RAG. Could you please assist us in this manner by supporting this in this year when Rotary: Making a difference is our theme. 7 We are pleased to confirm a Professional Development Exchange with District 1461, Denmark. The Danish team will be in Tasmania from late May through to the end of June. We are seeking expressions of interest in Hosting for periods of three to four nights. It is envisaged that the team will fly into Launceston and spend some time in the North of the state before finishing in the south and flying out of Hobart. We can all recall some wonderful times with GSE teams in the past This is another opportunity to do so. Please contact PDG Gerard Blizzard gerardblizzard@bigpond.com Rotary Friendship Exchange to Taiwan, September 2018 Expressions of interest are invited to all Rotarians and partners [and individuals] to join a home hosting Rotary Friendship Exchange to Taiwan later this year in September for two weeks. Over the past 50 years the people of Taiwan have transformed their Asian Tiger nation into a technological, educational and cultural showcase to the world. Rotary is strong in Taiwan, with most members having a good command of English. Cost estimate: Approximately $2,500 per person.
